Work Text:

The bitter December wind howls against the floor-to-ceiling glass of the 24-hour Sky Lobby Cafeteria, but inside, the atmosphere is heavy with the stale scent of over-roasted espresso beans and late-semester dread. It's 3:00 A.M., and Gratuity "Tip" Tucci sits huddled in a vinyl booth, the harsh glow of her laptop screen reflecting in her tired, bloodshot eyes. She is nineteen, a sophomore at the University of Chicago, and currently drowning in a twelve-page term paper on post-colonial sociology that is due in exactly five hours.

Her fingers hover over the keyboard, static and useless. The cursor blinks at her mockingly, parked at the end of a half-finished, incoherent sentence. A soft, frustrated whine escapes her throat as she rubs her temples, trying to massage away the tension headache building behind her eyes. She is so incredibly close to tears. The stress isn't just a physical weight in her chest; it’s a cold, paralyzing panic. She feels entirely alone in the quiet, desolate café, save for a sleepy barista wiping down a distant counter.

Then, the bell dings. Tip doesn't bother looking up, assuming it’s just another caffeine-deprived student joining the graveyard shift. But then comes a familiar, rhythmic squeak of damp sneakers on the polished linoleum, followed by the faint rustle of a plastic takeout bag.

"Hey, stranger."

Tip’s head snaps up. Standing beside the booth is Penelope "Penny" Forrester. At twenty-two, Penny has a way of looking effortless even in the dead of winter. She is bundled up in an oversized, faded green puffer jacket, her cheeks flushed pink from the biting Chicago cold, and her blonde hair tucked messy-chic under a knit beanie. In her hands, she cradles a white paper bag that is radiating a glorious, unmistakable warmth.

"Penny?" Tip’s voice cracks slightly, her defenses instantly softening at the mere sight of her girlfriend. "What are you doing here? It’s three in the morning."

"I saw your location on my phone, and I knew you’d still be spiraling," Penny says with a tender, knowing smile. She slides into the booth opposite Tip, shedding her heavy jacket to reveal a cozy, worn-out hoodie. "And more importantly, I brought reinforcements."

With a flourish, Penny reaches into the bag and pulls out a plastic container of hot, fresh garlic knots and a side of marinara sauce from the late-night pizzeria down the block. The rich, savory aroma of garlic, melted butter, and baked dough immediately cuts through the sterile, bitter coffee smell of the cafeteria. It is Tip's ultimate, undisputed comfort food.

"You didn't," Tip whispers, her eyes welling up with actual tears now, though this time they aren't from stress.

"I did," Penny replies softly, sliding the container across the table and nudging Tip's laptop slightly to the side to make room. "Eat. Brain food first, academic crisis second."

Tip doesn't need to be told twice. She tears into a warm garlic knot, the savory comfort of it instantly grounding her. As she chews, the tight knot of anxiety in her stomach begins to loosen. Penny watches her with a look of pure, quiet devotion, reaching across the table to gently wipe a speck of stray garlic powder from the corner of Tip’s lip.

"I'm so stuck, Pen," Tip confesses, her voice small as she dips another knot into the red sauce. "I have three pages left, and my brain is just mush. I keep writing the same paragraph over and over."

"Then let's break it down together," Penny says, pulling her own notebook and a pen from her tote bag. She props her chin in her hand, leaning in close. "Tell me what you're trying to say. Don't worry about making it sound smart yet. Just talk to me."

For the next few hours, the world outside the Sky Lobby ceases to exist. The sky through the massive windows remains a deep, infinite pitch-black as Penny coaxes the ideas out of Tip’s head. Whenever Tip stumbles, Penny is there with a gentle prompt, a joke to break the tension, or a steadying hand over hers. They draft arguments, polish clunky sentences, and laugh quietly in the dim light so they don't disturb the sleeping student two booths over.

Slowly, the document grows. By 6:15 A.M., the final period is typed.

Tip stares at the screen, letting out a long, breathless exhale. "It's done. It's actually done."

"See? I knew you could do it," Penny beams, leaning across the table to press a soft, lingering kiss to Tip’s forehead.

Outside, the first pale blue and amber rays of dawn begin to bleed across the icy Chicago skyline, reflecting beautifully off the glass. Exhausted but triumphant, Tip slides over to Penny’s side of the booth, burying her face into her girlfriend's shoulder. Penny wraps her arms tightly around her, resting her chin on top of Tip's head as they watch the sunrise together.
