So cover your eyes, I have a surprise

Summary:

Scott Hunter has a birthday. It turns out to be pretty great.

Notes:

Read, review, kudos!

Work Text:

Scott sat on the bench in the locker room, staring at a picture of something covered in chocolate powder that had a spoon stuck into it. It was white underneath with brown specks and he had a hard time figuring out just exactly what it was.

That is, until Kip's second text came through.

'I made a healthier version of tiramisu with vanilla-lavender yogurt and chia seeds. Not only is it high in protein, but it's also one of the worst things I've ever put in my mouth.'

Scott laughed out loud and shook his head.

'I won't judge you if you call it a lost cause and call out to Ferrara Bakery for the real thing. Like, honestly, baby, don't subject yourself to that. Besides, if you only eat half of it, I'll have a treat when I get home.'

Kip replied quickly.

'A treat, huh?'

'Yep. A treat. Something to lick off of you when I lock us in the apartment for two days.' Scott smirked.

'It's on the way.'

Scott laughed out loud again at that and looked across the locker room at the only other person that was in there right now.

Ilya Rozanov.

He was staring down at his phone with a pinched look on his face, looking utterly miserable.

Scott shook his head. "Rozanov." He called over. "Just fucking Facetime your family. Everyone else is out visiting their families right now because we're the only two schmucks who didn't invite anyone to come so you have, under my estimation, about twenty minutes peace and quiet to do it. I'm not going to chirp you about it, you know that. I'm the safest option when it comes to the chucklefucks they invited to the All-Stars this year."

Ilya looked up at him, startled, his eyes a bit wide and vulnerable, something he probably didn't know was happening on his face.

"I...thank you, Hunter." He said, his voice quiet in a way it usually wasn't.

Instead of going to the bathroom or something for privacy, he immediately hit the button to call and Scott turned back to his own texts, teasing Kip while Ilya was lost in his own conversation. Apparently one of his children (and wasn't that a mind trip, Ilya Rozanov was a father) had a tooth coming in and was very grumpy and the other one was refusing to let go of one of Ilya's shirts while he was gone.

It was all too cute and domestic and Scott pretended it didn't rip through him.

---

Kip stood at the counter in the kitchen, tapping his fingers as he looked over the recipe in front of him. It was Scott's birthday and he was wondering why on fucking Earth he decided to make a Chocolate-Hazelnut Galette des Rois. He and Scott had been together long enough that the days of impressing each other were long gone. He knew Scott would love if he just called out for whatever was leftover from the local bakery.

But it was a point of pride.

He wanted to do something special for his man.

So Kip sucked it up and looked over the recipe yet again before going to grab all the ingredients he needed, hoping he didn't need to call Scott from the hospital saying his evil, intimidating KitchenAid stand mixer took his hand off.

---

By the time Scott came home from the errands he'd been running (yes he was running errands on his birthday, and Kip let him do it because it gave him time to get the birthday cake made and yes he finally finished it, even though he wanted to throw himself off the balcony several times while doing it, especially when he had to make the icing three times before it came out right), Kip was sitting on the couch acting like he was reading The Picture of Dorian Gray.

Truth be told, he'd read it more than once, so he was just focused on the pages to give him something to do.

He looked up and smiled at Scott, tossing the book aside. "Get your errands done?"

"Thankfully." Scott threw himself over the back of the couch and landed half in Kip's lap, wrapping himself around his middle. "Please tell me I have enough time before people start to arrive to take a nap."

Kip pretended to look at a watch that wasn't on his wrist. "Yeah, I think you can manage about two hours. That is if you can skip the shower."

"I did absolutely nothing to get dirty." Scott promised. "I bypassed going to the gym like I wanted, because it's my birthday goddamn it and I don't have to workout on my birthday if I don't want to."

Kip ran his hand under Scott's shirt and let his fingers run over the ridges of his abs, a small grin on his face. "I think you'll be ok if you take one day off from working out and having such a strict diet."

Scott groaned. "Ok, so, that's a no on not taking a shower."

"It is?" Kip asked, raising an eyebrow.

"It definitely is." Scott stood up and Kip yelped and blurted out a laugh as Scott picked him up newlywed style and carried him off to the bedroom.

---

Later on the party was an absolute success. Some people from Scott's team had come, along with Kip's dad, Elena, and even Shane and Ilya had come with their two kids. One of their daughters, Maya, refused to leave Ilya's arms, holding onto his collar like she was afraid he was going to disappear and the other one, Sasha, was a social little butterfly.

It was absolutely adorable and it did not make Kip want kids of his own.

That is until Sasha decided she absolutely loved Scott and decided he was her person.

The best part was it irritated the shit out of Ilya and he couldn't say anything about it because both of his daughters had him wrapped around their little fingers.

But seeing Scott carrying around this barely two year old little girl, who was wearing a soft baby pink gingham dress with some white tights and black shoes, her little sticky fist curled into the collar of his $770 Mr. Porter sweater, staring at her like she hung the moon, it was hard not to see that Scott would be an absolutely wonderful dad one day.

It did things to Kip that he was desperate to ignore.

---

Later when everyone left, after both Shane and Ilya's daughters fell asleep and Kip walked his dad to the subway to make sure he got there ok, he came back and smiled at Scott.

"I have one last present for you." He said.

"But you made me a whole cake." Scott said. "One that was absolutely fucking incredible by the way."

He'd taken his shirt off to put it in the wash and let it soak, uncaring if it was actually stained or not. He'd just get a new one.

He had to stop doing that. Kip walked around with a hard on enough as it was.

"I know. But I couldn't help myself." Kip smiled.

"Is it...what I think it is..." Scott walked over and leaned into him, their lips millimeters away from each other.

"Later." Kip kissed him quickly and he was glad that Scott had rooms he didn't even know he had. He walked into one that was used for spare things and picked up a medium size present wrapped in bright orange wrapping paper with a glittery pink bow on top and walked it out to where Scott was sitting on the couch, trying to act like he wasn't impatient.

"What's this?" Scott asked, perking up.

"Open it." Kip put the gift on his lap.

Scott startled. "It moved."

Kip snickered. "It did. Open it."

"What did you do?" Scott asked.

"Open it." Kip repeated for the third time.

Scott noticed the box and lid were two different things and he grabbed the lid and lifted it off, tossing it aside.

A small puppy head popped out and let out a sassy little bark. From what Scott remembered of coat patterns it was called blue merle. The dog had one bright blue eye and one brown eye and one ear that stuck up and one that folded down.

It was absolutely adorable.

Scott let out a startled laugh and looked up at Kip, wide eyed. "You got me a puppy?"

"A Boston Terrier." Kip said. "Apparently they're active, but good for apartment living. Not that you have a normal apartment. But I thought, when you go out for your runs..."

"I frickin' love..." Scott trailed off.

"Him. A male puppy." Kip said. "He doesn't have a name yet, I wanted you to do it."

"I'm thinking we should name him Beans." Scott decided.

"Why Beans?" Kip asked, making a face.

Scott laughed as he snuggled the puppy to him, kissing his head. "Because he just ripped one and it's fucking FOUL."

Kip burst out laughing and plopped down next to him. He reached out to rub at Beans' head and he watched as the puppy snuggled closer to Scott, soaking in his warmth.

"At least he's cute." Kip said.

"Will you think that of me when I come home from the gym smelling like a dumpster?" Scott asked playfully.

"Baby, that time is not the time to cuddle." Kip groaned.

"You don't mind the cuddling after sex." Scott pouted.

"That's entirely different." Kip said. "We're both gross and stinky then. It's like when you're on a date and you both eat garlic...it cancels it out and you don't offend when you make out later."

Scott snickered. "I'll have to remember that." He murmured, kissing Beans' head again. "Oh my God I can't get over how freaking cute you are! You're just the sweetest thing. Yes, you are going to have both of us wrapped around your tiny little paw." Scott grabbed one of Beans' paws gently and started kissing it.

"You are going to spoil him rotten." Kip said knowingly.

"Don't you know it." Scott said. "We're going to shop tomorrow."

"I'll wear my walking shoes." Kip joked.
