Sweet Fire

Summary:

Milo relaxes in front of the campfire one uneventful evening during camp.

Notes:

Work Text:

Milo stretched out their legs, looking away from their phone. Their feet just barely missed the edge of the campfire, fire close enough to their skin to be uncomfortable for most mortals.

Feeling pain was an underappreciated part of life, Milo thought. There's so many kinds of pain, each with their own unique flavour. Their legs heated and Milo breathed deeply, enjoying the woodfire smell.

The fire dancing probably looked great reflecting on Milo's face. A perfect shot for Momentgram! How did Milo go 30 seconds without posting, their Milovers must be missing them! Milo pulled out their phone and found the perfect angle, as usual. And as usual, they looked absolutely gorgeous.

With that posted, Milo tuned back in to their physical surroundings. Behind them Aaravi and Joy were cracking open a bottle, to their left was Oz chatting with Moss about something surely juicy. On the other side of the fire, Coach emerged loudly from the teachers' cabin.

"Sorry kids, we've run out of of s'more ingredients," Coach announced, pretending to be sympathetic to the campers' plight. "Fortunately, I can tell you all about a healthy alternative to s'mores-"

Milo and almost every other camper around the fire immediately stopped listening. Milo pulled out their phone - they needed to see what people were saying about their most recent Momentgram. They opened the app, only to be interrupted by a tap on the shoulder.

"Uh, hey," Oz whispered to them, "Jarrod brought these, want some?" They held out a bag of giant marshmallows.

"A marshmallow to toast would be absolutely delightful, thank you," Milo reached into the bag. Oz's hand wobbled at the close proximity, and Milo grabbed the bag to help. Their hand splayed over Oz's, incidentally grasping it as they together stabilised the marshmallows to remain in the in-the-bag state.

Pulling out an overfull hand of giant marshmallows, Milo saw a blush on Oz's face.

"W-well, let me know if you need any more!" Oz exclaimed as they hurried off.

Milo stuck the marshmallow on a stick and held it near the fire. They watched intently as the fire danced over the fluffy bright white, licking dangerously close to the stick and slowly turning the bright marshmallow a crisp golden brown.

They watched the sweet treat crackle as the perfectly gooey centre peeked through.

Absolutely perfect, both to eat and to share. Naturally, Milo snapped another Momentgram, #ThePerfectMarshmallow #ToastedMarshmallows, before taking a bite. As they felt the hot centre nearly burn their tongue, they glanced up and saw Scott and Calculester still listening to Couch talk about something. Milo had already forgotten what he was talking about, and they certainly weren't about to start listening again.

Milo breathed deeply, appreciating the sugary addition to the campfire smell. Their shoulders dropped and they stretched out their legs again. The fire flickered in front of their eyes. They loved every night of camp.
