Work Text:
Hanazawa Teruki awoke to a pain in his lower back. Groaning and rolling over on his pillow, he jumped slightly at the view that met him on the other side. Realization soon washed over him. Ah, that’s right. Teru had invited Kageyama to spend the night. Out of curtesy, the blonde offered to sleep on a spare futon with the bowl-cut boy. Kageyama had insisted that he was fine sleeping on the floor alone, but Teru knew that the guilt would never stop eating at him if he slept in his own soft bed while Kageyama slept on the hardwood floor. He figured the futon was big enough for the two middle school boys; Kageyama of course taking up less space with his smaller frame. Even the dull ache, which was now spreading to his neck, wouldn’t have made him regret his decision.
Teru smiled to himself, taking in the scene in front of him. Kageyama was still fast asleep, dark hair slightly disheveled, chest rising and falling under his blanket with each soft breath. Careful to not wake the sleeping boy, Teru reached for his phone that lay above him and tapped the screen. The phone lit up brightly displaying the time. 11:49. Jeez, it’s almost noon. Did he and Kageyama really sleep in this late? Teruki lay on his stomach, silently checking any social media notifications he missed while he was asleep. While tapping away, he couldn’t help but think to himself whether it would be more appropriate to make breakfast or lunch once the still sleeping boy was awake. And almost on cue, a low grumble emitted from Kageyama’s side of the futon.
His stomach was growling.
“Hnng” the smaller boy winced and softly wrapped his arms around his stomach in his sleep.
Teru set down his phone and took the obvious hunger pang of Kageyama as an excuse to wake him up.
“Oy…Kageyama” he whispered, easing in closer to the raven.
Mob didn’t budge.
“Kageyama-kun…” Teru’s voice rising a bit louder. “…Pssst. It’s morning.”
“Mmnng” was Mob’s only response; a noise in reaction to another growl from his belly.
Taking a bit more initiative to wake the other boy, Teru slowly reached out and placed a hand in Mob’s already messy locks, giving the boy small scritches to the head.
“Psst…Kageyama-Kun.” Teruki kept his tone gentle. “Good morning~”
Mob groggily began to open his eyes at the blonde’s soft touch. His eyes shot open in a bit of shock noticing how close his face was to Teru’s. A slight blush began darting across his cheeks. He too had forgotten the two boys had slept on the same futon last night. His eyes glanced around the room quickly, trying to take everything in before looking back at Teru’s own blue ones. This is…Hanazawa-kun’s apartment. He sighed in relief.
“H-Hanazawa-kun…” Mob’s voice still strained from sleep. “Good-” He was rudely interrupted by a large yawn.
Teru chuckled at how tired his companion was. “Good morning Kageyama-kun. Did you sleep well?”
“Mm hmm” Mob sluggishly sat up stretching his arms above his head, giving another yawn. “What about you Hanazawa-kun?” he asked rubbing the sleep from his eyes.
“I slept alright…I’m just not used to sleeping on the floor” the blonde said rising and stretching his own arms, nonchalantly beginning rubbing the back of his neck. He gave a soft smile towards the other boy, but was only met with a face of concern from Kageyama.
“I told you that you could sleep in your bed…you didn’t have to stay on the futon with me. Now you’re in pain…I’m sorry.”
“Don’t apologize Kageyama! It’ll pass.” Teruki placed the hand that was rubbing his own neck on the bowl-cut boys shoulder. “And besides…” He gave the shoulder a small squeeze. “If I slept in my bed I wouldn’t have gotten to see your face first thing this morning.” Teru sometimes couldn’t keep down his flirtatious nature…but what he said was true. Kageyama-kun’s face was pretty adorable while at rest. Well, at any time really.
Mob’s face quickly turned a shade of pink. “Ha-Hanazawa-kun…d-don’t say things like-” he was interrupted by his stomach grumbling again. “Ah-” Mob his lowered head as his face moved a shade darker from the embarrassing sound.
Teruki quickly covered his mouth to help hide a small giggle, but he couldn’t help it. Kageyama was just too precious.
“I see you’re hungry.” He smirked. “Which is reasonable considering it’s…” Teru grabbed his phone and tapped the screen again. “…almost 12:15.”
Mob’s eyes widened. “I didn’t realize I slept in so long…I’m sorr-”
The blonde waved his hand to shush the smaller boy. “Don’t worry about it Kageyama-kun. Now what sounds good to eat?”
The bowl-cut boy looked up towards the ceiling, jogging his brain of various meals that wouldn’t be so much to ask Teru to make.
Mob let out a low hum.
“Hmm?”
Mob glanced back at Teru and shrugged, “…maybe omelettes?”
Teru thought about the contents of his kitchen. Being the only one that lived in his apartment, there wasn’t that much food, probably just enough for him. He listed off ingredients in his head. Rice? Check. Onions? Check. Eggs? Uh oh…
“Ah…I’m sorry Kageyama, but I don’t have any eggs.” Teru silently cursed himself and made a mental note to run to the grocery store and grab eggs for the next time Kageyama came to visit.
“Oh…” Mob tossed his head up in thought again. “Pancakes then?”
“I think I have some mix in a box. Is that alright with you?”
The bowl-cut boy nodded.
“Then it’s settled.” Teru gave Mob a small thumbs up. “Pancakes it is.”
Teru rushed into the kitchen with a blanket-covered Mob trudging behind him, bare feet lightly tapping across the tiled floor. The blonde searched a few cabinets before finding the other boy’s breakfast of choice. Ah ha! He shook the box to make sure there was enough mix for the two of them.
Teruki spun around toward Mob and held up the box triumphantly. “Found it!” The action made the smaller boy reveal a small grin.
Teru smiled back at Mob, taking in every second of the expression that, sadly, rarely crossed the boy’s face. “The pans are in the cupboard on the left by the sink. Could you grab me one Kageyama-kun? I’ll get the bowl and whisk.”
Mob quickly nodded and lumbered over to the said cupboard, pulling out a large circular pan.
“Will this one work?” he lifted the pan so Teru could see.
“Perfect! Just set it on the stove for now.”
Mob did as he was told while the blonde cautiously filled a mixing bowl with the contents of the box, careful to not make a mess of the dusty substance. He followed up by adding a cup of water to the mix and rapidly whisking away at the batter.
“Alright that should be enough for the both of us.” Teru turned to the stove, bowl in hand, and reached to turn on one of the burners.
Mob stood watching the other work carefully. Hanazawa-kun is probably used to making meals by himself. I shouldn’t interrupt. He stared at the taller boy emptying some of the mix into the now hot pan.
The two quietly watched small bubbles form on the top the batter, Mob quietly fiddling with the hem of his blanket as he grew hungrier and hungrier by the second.
Teruki broke the silence. “Kageyama-kun, would you like to do the honors?”
The raven tilted his head in confusion. “Would I what?”
Teru pointed towards the pan. “Flip the pancake?”
The smaller boy tilted his head down in slight embarrassment. “Oh…I’ve never actually…” his voice lowered to a murmur, “I don’t think I can. I’ve only ever watched my mom and Ritsu cook…I was never any good at preparing food.”
“Really? Pancakes are pretty easy.” Mob looked back up at Teru as the blonde grasped the pan’s handle. “I’ll show you. Watch this.”
Teru lifted the pan with both hands and carefully shook it to make sure the bottom of the batter was fully cooked. He tilted the pan forward slightly and with a quick flick of the wrist, the pancake was sent in the air. Mob watched it in awe as it flipped multiple inches above the pan before falling back on its opposite side. Teru made it seem effortless.
The blonde gave out a small self-congratulatory “Ta-da~ ” while smiling back at his companion. “No psychic powers necessary!”
Mob only stood still staring at the pancake, eyes gleaming. “Hanazawa-kun’s so cool…”
Teru blushed, rubbing his finger under his nose in embarrassment from the other boy’s compliment. “Aw, it’s pretty easy after you’ve done it a few times…would you like to try now?” Teru reached over to the bowl of batter and began pouring another circle into the pan.
“S-sure…” Mob gently trudged over to the stove, watching tiny bubbles form in the batter before gripping onto the handle with both hands. “Like this?”
Teru nodded. “Uh huh. Now, flip!”
Mob mentally retraced the same actions Hanazawa did—he lifted the pan gently to check the bottom and make sure it was cooked all the way through, just like Hanazawa, tilted the pan forward, just like Hanazawa, flicked his wrists upwards and—
“AH--”
The pancake that was suddenly shot into the air was not landing back down nicely into the pan just as Hanazawa’s did. No, the breakfast food that Mob had flipped was hurled behind him and now heading towards the floor. Luckily for Mob, a soft yellow-green glow appeared around the pancake before it touched the tile.
Mob and Teru shot a glance at each other before Teru burst out in a loud cackle while sending the pancake back to its rightful place with his telekinesis.
The laughter from his friend at his mistake mad Mob’s turn a deep shade of pink. “I-I-I’m sorry, Hanazawa-kun! I-I didn’t m-”
He was cut off by Teru waving a hand in front of him, still giggling at the event that just occurred. “I-It’s quite alright Kageyama-kun!” I-” he was interrupted by his own laughter, gripping at his stomach. “I’ve just never seen someone…ha…someone do that before!”
Mob’s face turned a shade darker, but he couldn’t help but let out a small smile at Teru’s own giggle fit. “I guess…it was kinda funny.”
“Kinda?! You just-” Teru raised his arms and exaggeratedly flung them behind his head in an effort to recreate Mob’s actions. “I can’t believe you-ah-” Teru clutched his stomach, slowly folding inwards. “I can’t believe-” He began to wipe at the tears that started forming his eyes.
“It...it just aha-it just went-” Teru was cut off by a noise emitting from his nose.
…
The blonde quickly shot up covering his face, trying to hide any evidence of what just occurred.
“Hanazawa-kun?”
“Mhmm?” Teru nodded, a blush now starting to appear on his cheeks.
“Did you just-”
“No…no I didn’t…” Teru tried covering even more of his face as his own flush deepened.
“You snorted.” Mob deadpanned.
“AUGH!” Teru groaned turning away from the smaller boy, face still in hands. “How embarrassing! I can’t believe I-” he let out a heavy sigh.
He turned back around, deciding to face his embarrassment head on. “Go ahead. It’s your turn to laugh…”
Mob smiled at Teruki’s flushed state. It was rare that the blonde ever showed awkwardness.
“I mean, that was kinda funny too…”
Teru awkwardly chuckled. “Yeah, I know right?” He reached a hand behind him to scratch the back of his head. “Ugly sound...”
Mob tilted his head. “Ugly?”
Teru looked towards the floor. “Yeah, I hate it…I try not to laugh too hard because of it.”
“Oh…” Mob frowned, “You shouldn’t say that Hanazawa-kun!” Teru glanced back up at the smaller boy’s face from due to his sudden outburst.
“You shouldn’t say that…it’s not ugly. It’s actually k-kinda…” Mob moved his gaze to his feet, trying to avoid showing the blush that was appearing on his cheeks.
“Kinda?” Teru pressed on.
“…K-Kinda cute.”
All Teru could do was stare at Mob, a wide toothy grin slowly appearing on his face. He quickly stepped over to the other boy wrapping him in a tight bear hug.
“Ah! Hana-”
“Oh, Kageyama-kun! Why do you have to be so ADORABLE?!” Teru squeezed the bowl-cut boy even tighter. He just didn’t want to let go of this precious human that was standing in front of him.
Mob apparently didn’t mind Teruki’s gesture and returned the hug—not as tight as Teru, but tight enough that they both stayed locked in each other’s embrace. The remained like that, just taking in the presence of the other…happy to be together.
The silence between their hug was interrupted by a loud growl from Mob’s stomach.
“Ugggh…”
“Oh, still hungry I see…” Teru broke the hug, pulling away slightly, only to get a better look at Mob’s face. “Hey, Kageyama-kun?”
“Hmm?” The raven stared up at him.
“How about we flip the next one together?”
Mob let out a small sound of approval, and both boys walked over to the stove. Teru swiftly poured some of the batter into the pan.
“Alright…ready?”
“Ready.” Mob said already gripping onto the handle of the pan.
Teru placed both of hands over Mob’s smaller ones, making both of them blush at the close contact.
“On three, okay?”
Mob nodded, gripping the pan a little tighter. All focus was on what laid in that pan. He didn’t want to make the same mistake again.
“Alright…one…”
“Two…”
“Three!!”
