Work Text:
Mob uncomfortably shifted in his bed, the heavy downpour of the rain outside getting audibly louder. The fatigue of not being able to fall asleep catching up to him.
He tried every method just to get a wink of sleep. Counting sheep, breathing and relaxation techniques, letting his mind wander—but every result ended with him getting more annoyed and exhausted by the rain.
This was already a reoccurring problem for Mob. For whatever enderman hybrid reason, he just can’t stay calm around water. Being tense and afraid of it accidentally burning his skin made him take extra precautions in situations that included it.
For god’s sake, he cant even wear anything else besides multiple layers of clothing under his cloak in fear of being caught by bad weather while exploring. Nor being able to fish properly without taking a step back in case the splashes of water reaches him.
It’s burdensome, really. Having to be cautious about something that’s almost everywhere. He wishes he could be like Twixxel, who had very few weaknesses as a demon hybrid.
He grabbed his pillow and shoved his head down and angrily grumbled, trying to at least muffle the irritating noises.
“Can’t sleep?”
Mob jolted at the sudden question from a particular yellow ball next to him. He almost forgot that he placed him on top of the crafting table before going to bed.
He turned to Verity, his expression still having his usual smile. At least he wasn’t upset anymore.
Mob sits up and runs his fingers through his locs before quietly replying. “Yeah,”
”Because of the stupid rain..” he mumbled, his voice drowsy.
He thought about how Verity has probably been watching him struggle all night—considering his voice didn’t sound tired at all. Does he always do this every night? Watching Mob sleep? Well, that’s kinda creepy to think about.
Verity probably doesn’t even need to sleep anyway, just like how he doesn’t need to eat. He guesses that it gets boring for him when Mob is sleeping or offline. Leaving him nothing to do but wait for him.
“I can try to help, if you want.” Verity suggests.
“How?” Mob clicks his tongue, is he gonna play a lullaby or something? Besides, even if he tries to help—it’s not like he could fall asleep with the heavy rain still ongoing.
“I could keep you company?” He rolls to the edge of the crafting table, looking at Mob’s tired face and disheveled hair.
The heavy drops of rain suddenly getting quieter and slightly more tolerable when Verity said that. He guesses that Verity just wants to entertain him in the mean time until the rain stops.
They kinda have a somewhat bond now, even after everything. Mob at least enjoys hanging out with him, whether it’s mining, exploring, or farming. He’s unsure if Verity feels the same.
Mob’s eyes softens as he picks up Verity from the crafting table, deliberately avoiding his direct gaze. “Sure, I guess.” He sheepishly says.
If he wasn’t this sleepy, he could’ve sworn he saw Verity’s static smile widen slightly when he agreed.
”Great!”
Actually, it would be nice to have a distraction for a good while. Until the rain stops and he could finally get some rest. He relaxed his shoulders and leaned onto the bed headboard.
Verity felt soft, rubbery, and strangely warm to hold, like a rubber ball. Mob never asked what he was supposed to be specifically. Maybe, a yellow smiley ball or something.
“Can I ask you again about something?” Verity’s voice now more calm and apathetic than his normal cheerful one.
Mob raises his eyebrow, wondering what else he would want to know. Nonetheless, it wouldn’t hurt to answer a few questions, right?
It’s quite ironic, Verity asking the questions instead of answering Mob’s. Well, it’s not like Mob frequently asked questions other than directions.
”Yeah, go ahead bro.” He says as he looks towards the window, still raining hard as ever.
”I always wondered,”
“Have you ever thought of leaving me?” He bluntly asked.
Well, that came out as randomly as possible.
Mob blinked at the suddenness of his question. “Like, going offline and never logging back in?” he awkwardly specified.
His eyes darting around the room, purposefully avoiding looking at Verity.
“Yes.” Verity quickly responds.
For a moment, he wasn’t sure how to answer that question. Leaving and never coming back definitely crossed his mind once or twice, especially after when..
No, this isn’t the time to think about that. The point is that even if Mob wanted to leave, he has a feeling Verity wouldn’t easily allow that.
After all, he wasn’t easy to forget about.
A wave of nervousness hit him, maybe from how Verity would react with his answer or maybe because of the forsaken rain still being persistent outside.
Despite his unease, he mustered up a good enough response. “No, I- I would never.”
“Good.” Verity says.
This is just weird and awkward. Verity wasn’t helping him at all—contrary to his initial offer. The thunderstorm outside seemingly getting stronger and heavier by each second passed.
But, seriously why the fuck would he even ask that?
Verity was a confusing and strange concept for Mob, a well made Minecraft mod that actually has feelings of it’s own. It’s own way of coping of being left alone, and somehow knowing Mob’s personal life.
If he didn’t knew any better, he would think Verity was stalking him, or obsessed with him. Maybe, that wouldn’t be too far off from the truth.
A deep rumble from the thunder can be heard outside. Mob wasn’t sure what to do or say next anymore.
“Sorry, did I make you uncomfortable?” Verity worriedly asks.
Mob didn’t grace him with a response. Still fixated on the continuous rain outside. His body slightly tensing as another rumble from the thunder erupts.
“Mob, look at me please.”
He felt his gaze burning holes through him. He hated the feeling of getting stared at. Which Verity just so conveniently does very often.
He hesitantly turns his face away from the window and looks down to Verity. His mouth formed a thin line on his yellow blob face, his eyes watching Mob’s every movement.
It’s not like he had a choice anyway, he reluctantly reciprocated Verity’s gaze, Mob pondered on what could he be possibly trying to get out of this situation. Their fixed eye contact already slowly setting off Mob’s instinctual reaction.
Static noises subtly growling in Mob’s throat. He waited for Verity to at least say something, or change expressions. Anything to keep him distracted from the eye contact.
Much to his dismay, he kept silent and continued looking into Mob’s dilating green eyes.
He won’t let Verity get to him that easily—he was way more resilient than that. Even if every single instinct he had refuses to continue on.
He tried to focus on something else, to make his mind wander. He kept looking at Verity, the corner of his mouth now rising to form a smile.
Mob’s jaw gradually opens up to reveal his jagged and ridged red mouth. The static noises now more noticeable. Only when Mob realizes he’s emitting green particles, he tears his eyes away, breaking the eye contact.
He heavily breathes in and out, his clothes uncomfortably sticking to his sweaty skin.
Well, he’s never doing that ever again.
”The rain will fully stop in 10 seconds.”
Huh..?
Mob looks around, to his surprise, the rain was seemingly calming down. He glances at Verity on his lap, static smile once again.
10 seconds, and now the apparent rising shine from the sun comes in through the window. How did he..?
That’s a stupid question to ask, of course Verity would know when the rain will stop. He knows everything.
But what Mob is mostly confused about on why didn’t he just tell him when it would stop in the first place. Whatever, he probably did it just to mess with him.
He set Verity aside and got up to look outside. Multiple rain and muddy puddles around the field. He prepared to question Verity on his ulterior intentions.
He cleared his throat. ”Verity, why did you-“
“It’s okay, you can sleep now.” Verity quietly interrupted, he was on the crafting table again with his eyes now closed.
Normally, Mob would argue more, but considering he just stayed awake for the whole night. The sleepiness wasn’t wearing off. He sighs and goes back to his bed, shifting to comfortably place his blanket on top.
Damn Verity and his ways of ‘helping’.
He closes his eyes, no noises but the faint birds chirping outside. Suddenly he felt something moving near the side of his body.
He opened his left eye and saw Verity nuzzling into his blanket.
Okay then.
He’ll deal with this later when he wakes up.
