Emerging from the shadows

Summary:

What if Tory didn’t abandon the sekai taikai exhibit?

Chapter 1: Finish it

Chapter Text

The silence inside the Cobra Kai dojo during the official Sekai Taikai exhibition was thick, almost suffocating.

The international committee representatives stood with their digital tablets, evaluating every breath, every stance.

Everyone stood at the edge of the mat, our heart hammering against our ribs.

But for Robby it was different, he knew the hell Tory was secretly going through at home with her mother’s failing health. He had been terrified that the crushing pressure would break her today. But as she stepped onto the canvas, there were no tears in her eyes. Instead, there was a cold, radiant steel—a dangerous fire that Sensei Kim Da-Eun had carefully cultivated over the last few weeks.

"Fighter Nichols! Fighter LaRusso! Center mat!" the tournament official barked.

Sam advanced with that picture-perfect Miyagi-Do posture, her face a mask of practiced serenity, trying to channel the peace her father always preached. But Tory moved like an absolute apex predator. Her hand wraps were pulled flawlessly tight, and right before she raised her guard, she flicked her gaze toward the corner of the mat.

Sensei Kim Da-Eun gave her a slow, almost imperceptible nod of the head. It was a profound look of mutual understanding between master and student.

Unlike Daniel, who constantly talked about Tory like a dangerous flare-up that needed to be "contained," Kim had embraced her. She had spent their private sessions teaching Tory that grief and rage weren't weaknesses to be balanced away—they were the most potent fuels a warrior could possess.

"Begin!" the official shouted.

Sam initiated a defensive, circular movement, waiting for Tory to recklessly charge. But Tory didn't rush blindly. She paused for a fraction of a second, measuring the exact technical distance. The moment Sam threw a lightning-fast jab to test her, Tory didn't use a soft Miyagi-Do block; she executed a brutal, rigid Tang Soo Do redirection that made Sam's forearms visibly shudder. Tory countered instantly, driving a vicious front kick straight into Sam's ribs.

CRACK.

Sam stumbled back three paces, clutching her side and gasping for breath. The raw power of the strike had taken her completely off guard.

"Point, Nichols!" the referee signaled.

"Keep your focus, Sam! Find your center!" Daniel shouted from the sidelines, his voice laced with sudden panic at the sheer control Tory was displaying.

From the opposite corner, Sensei Kim’s icy voice cut through the dojo air with mathematical precision. "Finish it, Nichols ."

Tory’s lips curled into a lethal, confident smirk.

When they reset, the synchronization between Kim’s directives and Tory’s execution was flawless. Sam attempted to execute a low sweep to transition into a ground submission, but Tory anticipated the shift before it even unfolded. Spinning effortlessly on her heel, Tory evaded the grip, trapped Sam's extending arm in mid-air, and slammed her flat against the canvas with a clean, devastating judo toss. Tory dropped her fist, and hit her square on her chest. Sam didn’t even tried to get up, she just laid there gasping for air.

When the referee came closer to her and she couldn’t respond he declared it.

"knockout Winner Nichols!"

The entire dojo plummeted into a dead, paralyzed silence, broken only by the firm, rhythmic applause of the Sekai Taikai representatives as they typed highest-tier evaluations into their screens.

Tory snapped back into a perfect standing posture, not even breaking a sweat. Instead of looking at Daniel, Johnny, or Robby, she marched straight to the edge of the mat where Sensei Kim was waiting. Tory dropped into a deep, traditional Korean bow, showing a level of profound discipline and respect Robby had never seen her give any instructor before.

Sensei Kim placed a firm, validating hand on Tory's shoulder, her sharp eyes flashing with a fierce, possessive pride.

"Magnificent, my captain," Kim murmured softly, ensuring her words carried across the quiet room. "Today you proved that true strength never apologizes for dominating. The world belongs to us."

Robby stood frozen in the background, a chill running down his spine. Tory had won the exhibition match and secured her spot, but the terrifyingly strong bond that had just cemented between her and Sensei Kim Da-Eun was about to change the entire landscape of the Sekai Taikai.

The heavy iron door of the Miyagi-Do locker room slammed shut, the echo bouncing sharply off the concrete walls. Sam immediately collapsed onto the wooden bench, her shoulders trembling as she ran her fingers over her enoromously reddened forearms. Tory’s brutal, rigid blocks had left physical bruises, but the true damage was to Sam's psyche. She was staring blankly at her taped hands in utter disbelief.

Daniel LaRusso paced back and forth across the narrow floorboards, his face entirely pale, his hands gripped tightly in his hair. The technical superiority Tory had displayed—backed by the cold, calculating presence of Sensei Kim Da-Eun—had completely exposed Miyagi-Do before the global judges.

"I couldn't do anything, Dad," Sam whispered, her voice cracking as tears finally welled in her eyes. "That wasn't the Tory from before. She didn't fight with reckless, blinding rage. Every single move she made... it was like Sensei Kim was controlling her from the corner. They were completely synchronized."

"I know, Sam, I know," Daniel replied, stopping dead in his tracks, a frantic edge to his voice. "Kim Da-Eun isn't teaching Silver’s flashy karate. She’s drilling the pure, lethal Tang Soo Do of her grandfather. If Tory has learned to master her temper and channel it like that... she is practically unyielding."

Before Sam could answer, a massive roar of shouting erupted from the main dojo mat, carrying straight through the thin walls. Panic seized both of them instantly.

"The boys' match," Sam murmured, pushing herself up with a visible struggle. "Kenny and Hawk. Dad, if we lose this fight too..."

Daniel swallowed hard, a heavy knot tightening in his stomach. "Eli has the global experience, Sam. He’s going to win. He has to win."

They scrambled back out to the tatami just in time to witness the climax of the male division exhibition. But history was repeating itself. Kenny Payne wasn't moving like a frightened kid from the Valley; his agility and sharp, technical malice screamed Cobra Kai in every frame. It was the silent, approving nod of Sensei Kim that truly dictated the tempo.

Hawk attempted a spectacular, aggressive aerial assault, looking to close the match with a descending axe-kick. But Kenny, flawlessly anticipating the trajectory thanks to the advanced defensive counter-strategies Kim had drilled into the entire Cobra Kai unit, slid right underneath. With frightening, explosive speed, Kenny drove a devastating Silver Bullet strikestraight into Hawk’s plexo solar, following it up with a pristine sweep that sent the former Valley champion crashing flat onto his back.

"Winner of the match: Payne!" the referee bellowed.

The Sekai Taikai selection committee gathered in the center of the mat, reviewing their digital tablets and aggregating the final scores. Daniel, Johnny, Silver, and Kim Da-Eun stood lined up, waiting in agonizing tension.

The head international official stepped forward. "We thank both dojos for this exceptional demonstration. However, the Sekai Taikai demands absolute perfection in execution and tactical discipline. After evaluating both fights... the official delegation representing this region in Barcelona will be Cobra Kai alone”

"What?!" Johnny roared, stepping forward with his fists clenched. "That is complete garbage! My boys bled on that canvas too!"

Daniel stood entirely paralyzed. Miyagi-Do was out. His master's legacy, everything he had sacrificed to build, was about to evaporate right in front of Silver. A crushing panic seized him, but a wild, desperate memory flashed through his mind.

"Wait! Please, hold on!" Daniel shouted, turning on his heel and sprinting straight to his bag.

Seconds later, he returned holding a weather-worn, heavily barnished wooden chest. With trembling hands, he pried it open directly before the startled eyes of the international committee. Inside lay an ancient parchment stamped with the official ancestral seals of the Sekai Taikai from decades ago, alongside a faded gold medal and historic black-and-white photographs.

"Miyagi-Do is not some local, unproven club," Daniel said, his voice shaking with pure adrenaline as he held the documents out for the officials. "My master, Mr. Nariyoshi Miyagi, competed in and won this exact tournament generations ago. This is official proof of his victory. You cannot block the lineage of your own organization's from the world stage."

The Sekai Taikai judges fell completely silent. They leaned in close to examine the parchment, their eyes widening as they recognized the legendary, ancient seals of their own committee. They began to murmur intensely among themselves in Japanese, visibly stunned by the monumental historical discovery. Kim Da-Eun’s eyes narrowed into a sharp, displeased glare, while Silver’s smug grin vanished completely.

The head official straightened up, looking at Daniel with profound, solemn respect.

"We had zero knowledge that the lineage of the great Master Miyagi remained active within this dojo," the official declared formally. "Tradition and honor are the pillars of the Sekai Taikai. By right of historical heritage, and in recognition of Mr. Miyagi's status as a legendary past champion, the international committee hereby grants Miyagi-Do a special legacy spot in the tournament. We will see you in Barcelona."

Daniel let out a massive breath, nearly falling to his knees from the sudden relief. They had punched their ticket to Spain, but as he turned his gaze toward the Cobra Kai corner, he locked eyes with Tory. She didn't look afraid or defeated. Standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Sensei Kim, she stared right through him with a look of absolute, freezing contempt. Miyagi-Do hadn't earned their way onto the global stage; they had begged for it using the past. And in Barcelona, Cobra Kai was going to make sure that past was buried forever.
