Missing Melody

Summary:

“Well it only gets worse, kid.” Jax tapped his card to the reader.

She laughed and looked up at him with blue eyes that held his gaze in the same way that a pair of pinweld red and blue eyes had always seemed to.

“Damn, and I thought I’d wake up tomorrow rich and happy.”

Jax laughed a little at her unexpectedly snarky response.

He missed having interactions like this.

“Name’s J- uh… Felix. How about you?”

Jax glanced at her nametag just as she answered, “Penny.”

...

The people trapped inside the circus are discovered comatose in an abandoned building. Their headsets are removed and they are able to continue their old lives. All except Pomni, who disappeared from the circus a month prior.

Six months later, Jax meets a sleep deprivation night shift worker at a grocery store who feels all too familiar…

Chapter 1: Track 1: Intro

Chapter Text

It was like a record skipping the chorus of a song.

That’s what it felt like when Pomni disappeared, an incomplete melody, the part that tied it all together gone. The notebook of the circus losing its binding, the papers scattered.

The digital sun set on a normal day.

A digital morning spent together, a halfway bearable adventure that was completed together, an evening spent together.

Pomni felt as satisfied with her day as she could be here. A satisfaction the jester only felt after she spent the day with her friends.

When she felt it was time to turn in for the night she made sure to say “Good night!” to Ragatha, Gangle, and Zooble.

After receiving a couple “you too”’s and a small nod from Zooble, she started the walk back to her room, trudging forward on her always slightly too-small feeling legs.

She passed by Kinger’s pillow fort.

“Have a nice night Kinger!” She whispered near the pillow walls, hoping to not wake him if he had already fallen asleep.

Kinger peaked out of the door to the fort. His eyes were lucid looking in his dark sanctuary.

“Good night, Pomni.”

She gave him a wave and kept walking till she reached the hallway that contained the bedrooms.

Walking through the hallway, Pomni let her mind drift only to be broken out of her thoughts as she felt herself stop.

Pomni looked up to see Jax’s door in front of her.

Lingering in front of it, the jester bit her lip in contemplation before sighing, lifting her fist, and knocking.

“Have a nice night, Jax.”

She waited for a bit.

No response.

She continued walking to her room.
...

Jax was the last person in the circus to hear her voice.
