Peekaboo

Summary:

Jazz likes spending time with the human kittens when they're in the temple.

Notes:

For the 2026 round of Jazz Week, filling the prompt: Peekaboo

Work Text:

Jazz liked the tiny humans best, the ones that would be called kittens if humans called their young that. They just called them babies, but they call the young of any species that, so it didn’t feel right to him. But that train of thought was getting off track and getting off track resulted in pulled fur around tiny humans, and that hurt and he hated it, no matter how much he liked them.

The tiny human he was currently interacting with was standing in their pen, just tall enough to see over the side and laugh whenever they saw Jazz. That was probably the best sound any of them ever made, so he was weaving around toys in the room and popping out and inciting a peal of laughter before ducking behind something else to repeat the process. The tiny human would probably get bored soon, they didn’t have the best attention spans, but it would pass a little bit of time for both of them until the adult humans left the big ceremony in the other room.

“Jazz?” Prowl’s rich voice interrupted, though it drew excited babble from the tiny human and more laughter, and Jazz turned to look at him. “What are you doing?”

“Playing with the tiny human. Makes ‘em laugh.”

“Is… it fun?” Prowl sounded so skeptical, and that made Jazz wish he could laugh the way the tiny human did.

“It’s great, Prowl. Just watch.” Jazz meowed to attract the tiny human’s attention again before ducking behind a pile of blocks. Then he counted to three and lifted his head back up.

The tiny human laughed so hard they fell over. Quickly, they climbed back to their feet and looked over the rail again. Jazz ducked down again and the tiny human fell silent, then popped up again to be greeted with more of that same delighted laughter.

“They do… sound entertained,” Prowl allowed after a minute longer.

Well, his Prowl never did care for too much noise. He made up for it, in Jazz’s opinion, with a sharp mind and dry sense of humor. “Yeah! We’re having a good time. We’ve got a little time before the adults leave Alpha Trion’s ceremony, if you want to play too.”

“Ah!” They were interrupted by one of the adult humans coming into the room. “What are you doing in here! Shoo! No cats in the nursery!”

Jazz gave the adult his most charming meow, but he turned and left with Prowl rather than cause trouble.

Behind them, the tiny human cried out, “Kitty!” to the delight of, apparently, the rest of the room. Jazz considered his job well done, then.
