Work Text:
A warm morning rose over the Banther Lodge, the brilliant sun glowing with a fierce radiance that cast a magnificent light across the castle grounds. The beams caught the glass of the tall, rectangular double windows, reflecting a sharp glare across the stone floors.
Nearby, small birds sang their morning melodies, flitting about and waiting patiently for crumbs to drop by the sill.
Outside the massive courtyard doors, Pyrrah lay resting in the sun. She was waiting lazily for her morning meal, though mostly she simply dozed, heavy-lidded and entirely unbothered by the bustling world around her.
Yet, despite the sweltering heat, the morning quickly shifted into something far more magical as the Dragang finally gathered to eat together.
At long last, they shared a peaceful breakfast together around the grand council table, eating alongside the rest of the household like the massive, chaotic family they truly were.
A mountain of freshly baked pancakes and warm eggs sat between them. Soren was already playing with his food, turning a simple meal into a hilarious performance that made the morning even brighter.
Nearby, Ezran was happily feeding Bait like the bottomless pit of a glow toad he was, using the jelly tarts to artfully paint a sticky, red mustache across Bait's upper lip, just beneath his nostrils. Zym sat close by, uncharacteristically patient, waiting his turn to be fed while watching the jelly with wide, pleading eyes.
Corvus, acting as the only entirely normal person in the room, focused intensely on his own plate, doing his absolute best to avoid Soren's ridiculous jokes so he wouldn't accidentally choke on his food.
Hat remained firmly perched on top of Soren’s head, happily snapping up any leftovers that drifted too high.
Right in front of Callum’s plate sat Sneezles, begging pathetically for more food despite the generous pile Callum had already given him. The sight brought a bright, musical giggle from Rayla, who was sitting right by Callum's side.
Meanwhile, Jellybug had somehow managed to get stuck directly onto Bait’s back. Before the disgruntled glow toad could even try to clean himself, Jellybug reached forward and cleanly wiped the jelly mustache off Bait’s snout with her tongue— eagerly taking the sweet treat since she had completely rejected her own piece of bread, which Ezran had thoughtfully sliced into the shape of a perfect Reuleaux triangle.
Laughter echoed warmly across the great hall, accompanied by a chorus of lively chatter and playful bickering. At one end of the table, Ezran was locked in a intense standoff, casually trying to gauge who else might be plotting a move for the very last jelly tart— though his true, desperate mission was to claim it entirely for himself.
At the other end, Soren was happily weathering a barrage of exasperated complaints from Corvus, who insisted that Soren's ridiculous breakfast jokes didn't make a lick of sense and that he simply wanted to eat his morning food in peace.
Yet, despite Corvus's stern expression and deadpan groans, it didn't mean the tracker wasn't having a little fun of his own; he simply wasn't the type to easily show it.
Soren ate a massive bite of his pancake, crossed his arms, and leaned back to rest them behind his head as if he were lounging on a comfortable bed. He stared up at the high, vaulted ceiling above him and let out a dramatic, drawn-out sigh.
"Oh man," he groaned happily, "it's so nice finally having a perfectly normal, lovely breakfast with everybody here without, well..."
"Fighting each other?" Corvus supplied dryly, finishing the sentence with a deadpan expression. He raised a skeptical eyebrow, his gaze locking directly onto the knight as he waited for a response.
"Very close!" Soren shot back, his voice bright, sharp, and dripping with playful energy. "But mostly, I meant without killing each other."
He flashed a broad, cheeky grin, popped his last piece of egg into his mouth, and began to chew contentedly.
"I mean, he’s got a good point," Ezran chimed in, a genuine, warm morning smile lighting up his face. "We’ve never really had a breakfast like this before, and it’s finally our chance to make it real."
Deep down, the young king was simply overjoyed to have such a massive, unconventional family— one that not only stood by him on perilous missions, but also gathered around a chaotic breakfast table just like this one.
"I agree," Rayla added softly. "I dinnae think I've ever shared a special morning like this, either."
As she spoke, her gaze and her gentle smile were reserved entirely for Callum.
Beneath the edge of the table, her hand found his, squeezing it softly.
Callum couldn't manage to voice a reply because his mouth was completely stuffed with pancakes, but he offered her a warm, crinkling smile in return— the perfect, silent response he always gave her in quiet moments like these.
Corvus cleared his throat, setting his fork down against the edge of his plate as he spoke up to mention another missing piece of their family.
"Well, it would also be incredibly nice if General—forgive me, Queen Amaya —were here with us," he murmured thoughtfully. "But she informed me before departing that she would be away with Queen Janai for several weeks."
"Do you know what they've gone for?" Ezran asked, his youthful brow furrowing with quiet curiosity.
"I am uncertain of the exact details, King Ezran," Corvus replied smoothly, " but I can assure you it concerns their people. They are doing everything within their power to convince the Sunfire Elves to finally move into Evrykynd."
Ezran nodded understandingly, the small movement carrying a heavy, silent respect for the massive burden his aunt and Janai were carrying to unite their kingdoms.
Several minutes later, once breakfast had concluded, the rest of the household returned to their daily duties.
The shift gave Rayla her long-awaited opportunity to pull Ezran and the others aside to quietly discuss her secret plans for Callum's upcoming birthday party.
Before long, they gathered in the open courtyard of the training area. While Soren and Rayla Sparred with one another, Ezran sat comfortably on the stone stairs, watching intently and perhaps soaking in a few tactical lessons of his own.
Corvus stood close by his side, a silent, protective presence next to the young king.
Soren was performing remarkably well at first, despite the lethal advantage of Rayla's dual blades. Executing a brilliant pivot, he managed to forcefully disarm her first sword, twisting his own blade just enough against her wrist to break her stance and force her to instinctually reach down for her backup hunting knives.
It was a smart move on Soren's part.
But his triumph was short-lived.
With her second blade firmly in hand— just as she always did to throw Soren off balance —Rayla executed a swift, low sweep against his front leg, instantly sending the heavy knight crashing to the dirt. Moving with fluid, lethal grace, she brought her blade up, resting the edge safely but closely against his throat, ensuring her movements remained entirely deliberate and controlled.
"Still think that sweepin' the leg isnae a thing in sword fightin', then?" she asked, a sarcastic smirk playing on her lips.
Soren cleared his throat to deflect the teasing, knowing deep down that she was entirely right.
"Well, at least I disarmed one of yer swords," he grumbled, looking up at her. "That's still a pretty decent score in my book."
Pouting like a stubborn child, he crossed his arms, shut his eyes, and pointedly looked away. Rayla rolled her eyes, a small chuckle bubbling up in her chest. She sheathed her blades and extended a hand down to him so he could finally haul his heavy armor up from the dirt.
"Better start learnin' from an actual excellent warrior, then," she teased, offering him a warm, genuine smile as he grabbed her hand.
"Whatever," he muttered, still playfully annoyed as he dusted himself off.
Together, they walked back over to where Ezran and Corvus were waiting, Soren still wiping the sweat and dirt from his forehead with the back of his arm.
With the sparring finished, Rayla finally turned her attention to the real reason they had gathered.
She cleared her throat and began to speak.
"But in reality, I came here tae discuss some plans," she told them, turning a meaningful, pleading gaze toward Ezran.
Ezran caught her eye, then slowly shifted his gaze to Corvus, then to Soren, before looking back at Rayla.
His expression softened into subtle worry.
"Is it something bad?" he asked, looking entirely confused by the secrecy.
"Thankfully nocht," Rayla replied, offering a reassuring smile as her eyes scanned the rest of the group. "It's just something that really needs tae be done, and I'm fairly certain each of ye knows exactly what I'm talkin' about."
Before she could continue and finally tell them what it was about, the heavy, rhythmic waddling of a glow toad caught their attention. Bait was moving across the courtyard bridge, making a straight line toward them, and a moment later, he climbed up into Ezran's waiting hands.
"Tell us, what is it?" Ezran asked, cradling Bait close while staring up at her expectantly.
But before the words could leave her lips, Rayla's gaze instinctively drifted upward, settling on the high window of her bedroom. In truth, she wasn't looking at the room itself, but at Callum.
He had returned to his temporary office, but this time, he was only studying lightly— exactly as he had promised her.
Yet, despite his promise, a quiet anxiety still gnawed at her soul.
She was deeply worried about the invisible terrors locked inside his mind, terrified that those dark magic nightmares would continue to haunt him even in his sleep.
Pulling her gaze away from the window, she looked back at the waiting faces of her friends.
"It's about Callum," she said, her voice dropping into a soft, cautious whisper to ensure the sound wouldn't drift up to the office window.
"I'm plannin' somethin' special for his upcoming birthday in a few days, and I want ye all tae help me. It would be incredibly generous and kind if he knew that each of ye helped and brought some extra ideas to the table. What are yer thoughts, then?"
Her words were quiet, completely sincere, and delivered in a near-whisper, fiercely guarding the secret so Callum wouldn't accidentally overhear a single thing.
Everyone shared a collective look, their expressions lighting up with identical, knowing smiles.
"Oh yeah, we can absolutely help you." Ezran said, his voice brimming with honest enthusiasm. "We were actually planning to come and talk to you about a few ideas of our own."
Soren and Corvus nodded in immediate agreement.
"So, is this gonna be a regular party like the one we threw two years ago," Soren asked, bursting with curiosity, "or is there some kind of special Moonshadow surprise coming from you?"
He clearly had a dozen more questions lined up, but he forced himself to hold them back so he wouldn't delay their secret meeting.
"Actually, I've got some perfect ideas that'll make his day completely unfergettable," Rayla replied softly.
Shifting her weight, she bent her knees and crouched down, resting her elbows against her thighs. She pressed her fingertips together, her thumbs and fingers tapping against one another in a rapid, nervous rhythm as she prepared to lay out her plan.
The others leaned in close, hanging on her every word as she laid out her vision, remaining entirely captivated until the final syllable left her lips.
Her exact strategy was kept a closely guarded secret, left to be fully revealed only when the big day arrived.
And now, that long-awaited day had finally come.
Every detail of the party was perfectly in place.
The courtyard was transformed, the tension was buzzing with joyful excitement, and everyone was gathered together, anxiously waiting in their seats.
The grand celebration was staged at the peak of the Cursed Caldera, right at the heart of Lujanne's sanctuary for the Moon Nexus.
For Rayla, it was a profoundly sentimental choice— the very place where she had harbored so many desperate, silent wishes three long years ago before she was forced to leave him behind. A flood of bittersweet memories threatened to resurface, but she resolutely pushed them aside for now, focusing entirely on the present.
Strung all around the old dwelling where the Dragang used to stay were colorful, hand-painted banners.
They fluttered gently in the mountain breeze, bearing bold, joyful lettering: "Happy Birthday Callum!", "Many Happy Returns!", and even a slightly messy one that read, "Happy Birthday, High Mage of Evrykynd!"
The table where they had once shared so many makeshift meals was now practically groaning under the weight of the feast.
Resting at the center was a freshly prepared Moonberry Surprise— one of Callum's absolute favorite Moonshadow delicacies.
Surrounding it was a massive pile of jelly tarts, even though Callum rarely ate them because he absolutely hated finding sticky residue on his clothes. Next to the tarts sat a spectacular, mouth-watering birthday cake that looked entirely real, though in true Lujanne fashion, it was actually a clever magical illusion.
Beside the trick cake lay an abundance of actual, authentic desserts, baked specifically for the guest of honor.
Everyone was hiding inside the familiar stone walls of Lujanne’s dwelling, packed tightly into the very room the Dragang had shared years ago, breathlessly waiting to spring their surprise.
Soren stood poised near the entrance, holding a single match, ready to light the candle the exact second Callum stepped over the threshold. Positioned right at the front of the group were Ezran, Bait, and Zym, their eyes wide with anticipation. Corvus and High Council Member Opeli crouched right alongside them, while the royal baker, Barious, peeked out from behind a few other castle guests.
True to form, handling the final burst of festive confetti was entirely the Crownguard knight's responsibility.
Outside, night had fully fallen.
A brilliant, luminous full moon hung high in the sky, a sacred and powerful sight for a Moonshadow Elf.
For Rayla, the moon’s radiance was the perfect omen to make his birthday unforgettable.
She wanted to prove to him that whenever a full moon bathed the world in light, she would always be right by his side, holding him in her thoughts. And, of course, it was her chance to finally grant him the most important things of all— the kiss and the wishes she had dreamed of giving him for three long years, on his birthday.
To love him unconditionally.
But that profound declaration would present itself only when the moment was right.
Of course, Callum was nowhere near the Caldera yet, or else the carefully planned surprise would have been completely ruined.
Instead, his endless quest for knowledge had drawn him out to the desolate site of the Archdragons' memorial. He had ventured there hoping against hope that he might uncover a hidden truth, a forgotten text, or anything left behind that could help him map out a path forward.
Yet, to his deep frustration...
The journey yielded absolutely nothing.
He found himself standing entirely alone, staring out at a vast emptiness of shifting sand and the crushing, indifferent expanse of the ocean.
Defeated, he prepared to turn away and journey back toward the Banther Lodge, resigning himself to a long night of pouring endlessly through his ancient books once more.
Until a sudden, soft landing echoed directly behind him.
In the same instant, the primal cube in his satchel flared to life, radiating the brilliant, ethereal light of the Star Arcanum. A sharp wave of panic gripped him for a fleeting second, his heart leaping into his throat as he instinctively looked down at his boots.
There, looking up at him with wide, innocent eyes, sat a thoroughly sweet little cuddle-monkey.
It was Stella.
Callum froze, his mind racing to connect the pieces. If Stella was here, out on this lonely shore, that meant...
"Callum."
Rayla was there, standing just a few paces away.
He spun around to face her, the paralyzing tension in his chest instantly dissolving. A soft, profound smile of relief broke across his face— thankful beyond words that the glowing Star Arcanum was a sign of his beautiful elf, and not the terrifying enemy he constantly feared.
On instinct, he began stepping toward her, and she immediately moved forward to meet him. Just behind her, nestled in the shadows of the shore, her loyal Shadowpaw sat waiting patiently, ready to carry them both back up the mountain to the place they called home.
As she finally closed the distance between them, she reached out, her fingertips resting lightly against his shoulder as if a breath of wind could knock them away.
"Are ye okay?" she asked softly, her eyes searching his face.
"Yeah, just searching... and still completely stuck in the sand," he replied with a soft, self-deprecating laugh. "But I'm totally okay."
To reassure her, he offered a comforting gesture, raising an open palm toward the magnificent, star-swept night sky high above them.
"I'm glad, then," she murmured, stepping entirely into his space to wrap her arms around him in a brief, fiercely warm hug.
In truth, she had missed him terribly, even though they had only been separated for a handful of hours.
A quiet stillness settled over the shore once more, but this time, the silence was profoundly different. The crushing isolation was gone, replaced by a gentle, shared warmth as they both stared out at the lonely memorial and slowly interlaced their fingers together.
There were no words left to say, no more lingering questions to ask, and no more confusion to cloud their minds.
In that space, it was just the two of them, completely anchored in the warmth of each other’s presence. They quietly enjoyed a stolen, peaceful moment together on the shore before the gravity of the big moment finally arrived.
"It's so sad tae be real," she murmured, the words slipping past her lips before she could even blink.
Callum turned to face her, a flicker of confusion crossing his features as he struggled to grasp her meaning— until he followed her gaze back to the monument and truly understood the weight of her words.
"Yeah, it is," he agreed softly.
A long silence swept over them like a gentle breeze, granting them both a quiet moment to cast a final, deeply respectful look at the memorial.
"But think about it," Callum continued, stepping directly in front of her as he spoke.
He looked up at her, his expression radiating a sweet, earnest hope that instantly softened the heavy atmosphere. "They sacrificed themselves because they knew we could stop the great evil. They gave us a chance to live. They trusted us to make a difference, Rayla, and we'll make damn sure they're proud to have left the future of the world in human and elven hands."
"Actually, ye're kind of right. We did make a difference just now. We showed the Dragon Queen that elves and humans can be stronger together," she said confidently.
Reaching out, her fingers slid into his, flashing him a deeply loyal, reassuring smile.
They lingered there for another couple of minutes, absorbing the quiet weight of the shore until the time had finally come to move on.
"Come on, Callum, I need tae show ye somethin'," she told him.
Her hand remained laced tightly with his as she began gently pulling him to her side, giving him a playful tug to follow her lead.
"What is it?" he asked, his curiosity finally piqued.
"It's somethin' ye really need tae see for yerself," she replied back, her eyes dancing with hidden excitement.
Together, they turned and began walking back toward her Shadowpaw, prepared to mount up and ascend toward the Moon Nexus. Rayla, however, had an entirely different thought occupying her mind.
It was all a calculated part of her plan.
"Oh aye, before we take off, I need tae ask ye somethin'," she said, stopping him in his tracks.
Callum met her gaze with a raised eyebrow and an expression of pure confusion.
"Do ye happen tae remember the first thing ye asked me a year ago, when ye first woke me up?"
As she spoke, her hands were clasped subtly behind her back, resting right against the small of her spine. Her posture made it seem as though she were concealing something from him, but he couldn't quite discern what it might be, so he ultimately let the thought slip away.
"You mean, after the battle with— you know," he asked, his voice sinking into a quiet whisper.
"Aye, that," she replied softly.
Memory flooded back to Callum, and a spark of recognition lit up his eyes.
He knew exactly what he had asked her.
Softly mimicking his own voice from a year ago, he repeated the words with quiet intensity: "Do you trust me?"
The moment the words left his lips, Rayla brought her hands out from behind her back, revealing a strip of vibrant red fabric.
It was a cloth that held deep, secret meaning for them— reminiscent of a private tradition they had shared a year ago.
And it was the exact color of his scarf.
Callum was completely taken aback; he had never expected her to throw his own nostalgic gesture right back at him, though he was still entirely unaware of the true reason behind it.
Without a moment's hesitation, he reached up from behind, gently placing his hands over hers. He gazed down at the familiar fabric he had missed so much, the memory washing over him so vividly it felt as though it had happened only yesterday.
For a fleeting second, a tear pricked at the corner of his eye, but he blinked it away.
A bright, radiant smile broke across his face, and his eyes softened sweetly. He looked up at Rayla, and for a long moment, he became entirely lost in her gaze.
Whenever he felt anxious, stranded, or utterly alone, he always pictured her eyes— a beautiful, comforting view of pure moonlight that never failed to guide him home.
And the feeling was entirely mutual; his eyes held the exact same comforting power for Rayla.
"I do," Callum replied truthfully, his voice steady. "I always do."
Just as he had tied his own red scarf around her eyes a year ago, it was now Rayla’s turn to return the favor. She gently wrapped the cloth over his gaze, securing it with practiced care.
Once the blindfold was fast, they mounted her Shadowpaw, took off into the shadows, and began speeding through the cool night.
The journey to his destination didn't take very long. He had initially assumed she would lead him far across the kingdom, but the ride came to a halt much sooner than expected.
Stripped of his sight, a slight tremor of confusion and vulnerability crept into his chest, simply because he was completely blind to his surroundings and had no inkling of where they were going.
Finally, they arrived.
The air fell absolutely quiet.
Very, very quiet.
He still couldn't fathom where they had gone, but he lacked the courage to ask, choosing instead to wait until he could see the truth for himself.
At the very least, Rayla was right there, holding him close to her side— and in that moment, her touch was the only thing that truly mattered to him.
She finally spoke, breaking the absolute quiet.
"Ye're doin' amazin', Callum. Just a little bit longer," she murmured. Her voice was incredibly calm, and its gentle, steady rhythm instantly quieted the racing thoughts in
A soft smile broke across his face. "Uh, I don't think there's any point in asking where you're taking me, right?"
She chuckled softly, the sound warm against his arm. "Nah. I know ye're worried, but I promise ye, we're very close tae the door."
"Pff, I'm not worried. I'm just interested," Callum countered defensively. "But if you say so—wait a minute, did you say door?"
The heavy click of a latch echoed before he could even formulate a reply.
The door swung open.
Rayla gently guided him forward into the room without saying a word, her touch steady against his arm, until she finally slipped the red fabric from his eyes.
"Okay, we're here, then," she murmured.
Callum initially thought his eyes were simply still closed, blinking multiple times against the void, but the reality quickly dawned on him: the room was just pitch-black.
"Oh, that's... pretty cool," he joked dryly, a sarcastic smile tugging at his lips as he planted his hands firmly on his hips. "An amazing room full of total darkness and, uh, potentially empty space. I really love what you've done with the place."
Rayla slapped a hand against her forehead at his dry humor, letting out a soft groan and whispering an exasperated Moonshadow curse under her breath that he couldn't quite catch.
A heartbeat later, the darkness was shattered by three distinct, rhythmic knocks against the hollow wood.
Two quick, and one slow.
Instantly, dozens of hidden candles flared to life, flooding the space with a warm, brilliant glow.
And then, in a single, breathless heartbeat...
POP!!!
Vibrant confetti instantly exploded across the space, filling the air with a flurry of bright colors.
"SURPRISE!"
The collective shout echoed off the stone walls, catching Callum completely off guard and making him flinch hard in sheer astonishment.
"What the—"
Before he could even finish his thought, Rayla threw her arms around him, wrapping him in a fierce hug from behind. She leaned her head gently onto his shoulder, a bright, affectionate smile gracing her face.
"Happy birthday, my big dumb human." she whispered warmly against his neck.
A heartbeat later, Ezran charged forward, immediately enveloping him in a massive, joyful hug from the front. "Happy birthday, big brother!" he cheered, squeezing him tight.
Down below, Zym and Bait rushed straight toward his legs, eagerly rubbing their heads against his boots with pure, unconditional love.
Even little Sneezles participated; he was still curled up, fast asleep right against Callum's signature scarf, but let out a tiny, high-pitched sneeze the exact moment he sensed the sudden rush of people crowding around his favorite human.
It was Soren. "HAPPY BIRTHDAY, STEP-MAGE!"
He ran forward with such reckless speed and momentum that the exact second he tackled Callum in a crushing embrace, he accidentally swept up everyone else along with them.
In a chaotic tangle of limbs, armor, and confetti, he knocked the entire group off their feet, sending them all crashing heavily— but safely —to the floor.
For a breathless second, there was silence, before the entire heap of friends completely dissolved into helpless, roaring fits of laughter right there on the ground.
Hat had just enough energy to hop onto his hand, a silly gesture that forced Callum to catch his breath from laughing so hard.
"Y'all made this in one day?" he asked happily.
"Three, actually," Rayla replied, a bright smile lighting up her face. "But the final touches took the hale mornin', and nigh on the whole evening." She gestured toward the ceiling, though her other hand lingered gently against his back— a comforting touch following what they playfully dubbed the Soren-group-fall.
"Come on, High Mage, it's not over yet," Corvus called out, extending a steady hand to help him back to his feet.
A collective glance passed through the crowd, and everyone immediately stood up. Corvus gave the hand signal.
"Have a mystical, magical birthday! Have a wonderful, whimsical birthday! Have a fun and fantastical birthday. With wishes and kisses, and laughing and love!"
As the final notes of the song faded, the room erupted into clapping, everyone shouting their well-wishes.
Callum, however, was too stunned to speak. His mouth opened and closed several times, but the words simply failed him.
Yet, the pure joy radiant in his smile said everything; it truly meant the world to him.
When he finally found his voice, it trembled with an emotional, gentle warmth. "I can't believe you made all of this."
"Of course we did, big brother," Ezran chimed in first, stepping forward. "You deserve it."
Soren was quick to follow. "It's filled with pure, 100% platonic love from me to you, step-mage. So I hope you like my drawings." He gestured proudly toward a few papers hanging on the wall, held up by a shimmer of Lujanne’s magic.
The drawings were nothing more than crude circles, clearly meant to represent everyone's heads.
Then Corvus spoke up, his tone softening. "We decided to throw a party not just because it's your birthday, but because you needed it. Though, to be fair, the whole thing was actually planned and made by someone you really know."
'Really know? Wait...' The thought raced through his mind. His gaze snapped toward the doorway, where he found Rayla leaning against the frame.
The moment their eyes met, a small, knowing wave escaped her hand.
He crossed the room toward her, casting a quick glance back at the festive warmth of the crowd before turning his full attention to her.
"Didn't know you were an expert at throwing parties," Callum teased, unable to hide the growing smile on his face.
"I also didn't expect ye to love it so much," Rayla replied, her tone teasing back.
"Are you kidding me? I love it. You've done an amazing job, especially for your first time," he said, his voice brimming with pure joy.
"Well, I'm right glad ye like it. But ye'd best get prepared, 'cause it's no' over yet." Rayla booped his nose gently with her index finger.
"WHAAAT?!" Callum laughed, completely thrilled and ready for whatever she had planned next.
At last, it was time for the cake.
Rayla practically radiated anticipation, her eyes urging him to try this one specific confection. She had promised him, with absolute certainty, that it was the work of a true perfectionist.
Watching her eager face, Callum took a bite, fully expecting a taste of pure perfection.
And well...
A sickly, sour-apple green washed over Callum’s face, yet he forced a weak nod, choking out a breathless reassurance that it was "really good."
He tried to swallow his misery discreetly, silently cursing the terrifying realism of Lujanne’s illusions; he really should have known better than to trust the feast.
Rayla broke into a soft, breathless laugh. "I mean, ye should've waited, knowin' Lujanne is at this party," she teased, her thumb gently brushing away a tiny tear of amusement from the corner of her eye.
"Well, next time I'll be sure of that," Callum managed, the words catching in his throat. He hurriedly excused himself, desperate to escape the crowd, but the nausea overtook him too quickly, forcing him to succumb right there on the grass, just a few steps from the safety of the table.
Then came the moment he had truly been waiting for: Rayla’s special Moonberry surprise.
The real dessert finally sat before him, and a profound, pure adoration lit up his eyes, reflecting the deep warmth of the moment. His fingers hovered, trembling slightly with an eager, almost childlike excitement as he reached out, ready to lose himself in that first, perfect bite.
He paused, a slice of cake hovering just above his plate.
A sudden prickle of suspicion tightened his features, replacing his appetite with a familiar, fond annoyance. He narrowed his eyes, knitting his brows together as he glared across the table, bracing himself for another trick.
"Please tell me this is real," he sighed, his voice a mix of exhaustion and amusement. "No illusions. No plate full of grubs this time. I mean it."
Rayla let out a soft, melodic giggle at his caution. Her expression softened, warmth flooding her eyes as she reached out. "Dinna worry, it’s real," she said gently. "Just for ye, birthday Mage, i promise."
The tension left his shoulders at her words.
A genuine smile broke across his face, the last of his doubt melting away. He knew the fierce weight of her honor; once Rayla gave her word, it was an unbreakable bond.
That first bite tasted like pure, unadulterated heaven.
The world fell away, leaving him drifting through a sweet, vivid daydream born entirely of the Moonberry Surprise. It was a beautiful, dizzying haze; he could almost see himself dancing hand-in-hand with the memory of the flavor, losing himself as the rich sweetness burst across his tongue. A soft, breathless hum of sheer delight escaped him, completely helpless to how perfect it was.
He truly, deeply was.
Hours dissolved into the night after that.
Time lost all its rigid meaning, stretching out into what felt like days of effortless warmth, surrounded by a blur of endless laughter and the bright, untamed joy of everyone they loved.
"Hey, Soren? Have you seen Rayla and my brother?"
Ezran stood holding a plate piled high with jelly tarts and a single, precious slice of Moonberry Surprise, eager to share the treats.
Soren tilted his cup, desperately chasing the very last drop of wine before looking up with a knowing grin.
"Oh, you mean the lovebirds? Yeah, Rayla whisked him away about an hour ago. Wanted to steal him for herself before his birthday slips away into another year. Word is, she set up something incredibly special for him at a secret spot."
Ezran turned his gaze toward the door, a profound, quiet warmth filling his eyes as a soft smile graced his face.
Rayla led Callum by the hand, guiding him out toward the Moon Nexus.
Above them, the nearly full moon hung heavy in the night sky, casting a silver, ethereal glow over everything.
They both stopped to gaze up at it, a collective breath escaping them as the sheer, quiet beauty of the night washed away the rest of the world. Lost in the view, Callum didn't notice at first as Rayla began to subtly close the distance between them, stepping slowly and steadily into his space until she was right at his side.
Except, he did.
Callum reached around, slipping his arm behind her back to pull her gently against his side. His hand came to rest softly against her waist, his touch warm and reassuring through her clothes. Surprised that he had noticed her stepping closer, Rayla turned her head to look up at him.
His eyes, however, were still reflecting the brilliant glow of the moon— so bright, luminous, and completely breathtaking.
Safe in the knowledge that his gaze was fixed on the sky, a tender smile broke across her face. She slipped her own arm around his back, sliding her hand along his waist to hold him just as close.
She rested her head gently against his shoulder, and he tilted his down to press against hers, settling into the comfortable warmth of each other.
A profound silence wrapped around them— a quiet baseline of comfort they both desperately needed to feel.
Suddenly, a sudden realization sparked in Rayla’s mind, breaking the stillness.
She had almost completely forgotten the traditional Moonshadow birthday dance.
"Oh, aye, I almost forgot," she murmured, reluctantly easing out of his embrace so she could show him one final gift.
Callum reluctantly let his arms fall away, loosening his hold to give her space, his heart beating with anticipation to see what else she had prepared for him.
Rayla stepped back, drifting a few paces away until she stood directly in front of him, framed perfectly by the night. As Callum turned to face her, his expression was a mix of quiet confusion and profound fascination.
She took a deep, centering breath, letting her eyelids flutter shut for a brief second before opening them— her gaze locked onto his as the dance began.
Every movement was sharp, elegant, and perfectly poised.
The rhythmic tap of her footsteps echoed softly in his ears, sounding like a beautiful, unfamiliar melody woven just for him. Even the sky seemed to answer her; the moonlight caught the silver strands of her hair, making it sparkle in a brilliant halo while her skin radiated a soft, ethereal glow. Watching her dance, Callum became so completely spellbound that the entire universe faded away, leaving him feeling as though he were dreaming while wide awake.
She moved with effortless grace until the final sequence— a quick, final pivot meant to bring her face-to-face with him.
But a rare misstep caught her off guard.
Pushing off the wrong foot, her balance vanished, and she began to tip backward into the empty air.
Instinct took over before fear could even set in.
Callum surged forward with blinding speed, catching her well before her eyes could close or her breath could hitch in panic.
In an instant, they were thrown right back to the memory of the black ice incident.
His arms locked securely around her back, his fingers gripping her forearms to steady her against his chest. Looking down, he offered her a soft, steadying smile— one that carried an unspoken promise she felt deep in her soul: I have you. Always.
Relief washed over Rayla, and she mirrored his look, returning a smile that was just as warm, trusting, and fiercely grateful.
A profound silence settled over them.
Neither of them broke away, their gazes locked in a quiet, unyielding connection. Standing there in the moonlight, it felt as though they had finally found their true home in one another— a sacred space they had no intention of leaving, content to stay suspended in this perfect night until the morning sun washed over the horizon like a gentle ocean wave.
"Why do I feel like this has happened before?" Rayla asked softly, a touch of confusion softening her voice.
Callum cast his eyes down toward the ground for a fleeting second, the physical memory of their past encounters clicking into place. "Because you're right," he murmured, looking back up. "It actually did."
Fighting the deep urge to keep his arms wrapped around her forever, he gently loosened his hold and helped her steady herself back onto her feet.
He acted like the true gentleman he was, guided by a heart of pure gold.
Once they were both steady on their feet, they paused, completely lost in one another's gaze.
Looking into Rayla's stunning, light-violet eyes, Callum felt a profound warmth wash over him— a sensation so tender it felt as though she were physically wrapping his heart in a tight, loving embrace. At the same time, Callum's wonderful olive-green eyes anchored her, wrapping Rayla in a deep sense of safety.
In him, she saw a soul she could trust implicitly, a partner to grow alongside, and a person to love unconditionally.
And infinitely.
Above them, the moon poured its silver light down, wrapping them both in a shared, celestial glow.
"I'm sorry if I messed it up," she murmured, her features tight with quiet disappointment.
Callum reached out, gently cupping her chin to tilt her head upward until her eyes met his. Silencing her doubts, he leaned in and pressed his lips to hers in a warm kiss, completely filled with unconditional love.
Rayla immediately kissed him back, letting all her lingering confusion dissolve into the warmth of the moment.
Their breaths mingled softly, their rhythms syncing as if they shared a single heartbeat. Their hands found each other in the space between them, fingers intertwining, holding on tightly as if they never meant to let go.
Minutes dissolved into the quiet night before they finally parted, breathing softly against each other's lips, catching their breath before the silence returned.
Then, Callum finally spoke.
"There's nothing to apologise about. You were amazing, as always." he reassured her, his voice incredibly mellow and sweet.
They fell back into a soft, lingering silence, their gazes locked as they simply drifted in the quiet joy of each other's presence.
Looking down, her stunning light-violet eyes reminded him of a gorgeous, uninterrupted view of the moonlit sky.
Meanwhile, his beautiful olive-green eyes reminded her of the deep, breathing beauty of the Earth— evoking the memory of a crisp Xadian dawn, the kind that steals your breath away the moment you step outside just to look closer.
Rayla finally broke the tender silence that had wrapped around them so perfectly.
Beyond the Moon Nexus, the moon cast a brilliant path across the surface of the sea, mirroring the soft, dawning light of the approaching sun.
"Happy nineteenth birthday, again, Callum," she whispered warmly against his ear. She pulled back slightly, returning her gaze to look directly into his eyes.
"And, I love ye." She rested her forehead gently against his, letting the quiet moment stretch out to give him all the time he needed to answer.
"Thank you for everything, Rayla," he murmured back. "It means the world to me... and it’ll be a pleasure to be by your side for infinite years." His soft words echoed deeply in her mind, anchoring themselves in her heart.
"I love you, too."
They both offered those words up like a silent vow, a timeless promise meant to anchor them through every single second of the years ahead.
With that unspoken bond sealing their hearts, they leaned into each other once more, sharing a long, warm, and sacred kiss under the fading moonlight.
And just like that, the day dissolved into the quiet fabric of the past, sealing itself forever as an unforgettable memory.
