Chapter 1: The Game

Chapter Text

"Coming innnn~!"

You sang as you barged into Nagi's room, loaded with gifts and a cheeky smile.

"Welcome." The white-haired spoke in his dull tone- per usual, not bothering to glance up from his phone.

Your smile dimmed, but you refused to let his response dampen your spirits. Today was a special day, afterall.

You skipped over to the side of the bed where Nagi laid, before scattering the pile of presents on top of it.

"Happy five month anniversary, Sei!" You grinned as you pulled your boyfriend into a tight hug.

Almost immediately, his body went stiff in your embrace. Your eyebrow arched upwards in confusion.

He finally detached his gaze from his game to stare up at your eyes- and one look into his grey orbs and you knew....

He'd forgotten your anniversary.

"I'm sorry, Y/N, I really-"

"It's fine." You quietly cut him off, releasing him. "I understand, don't worry. It's just a five month anniversary anyway. I'm fine."

But you knew you weren't.

You spent countless weeks preparing for this exact day, saving up your money and working a part-time job just so you could surprise him with something he would like. Just yesterday, you begged your siblings to assist you in wrapping the gifts....and you'd been up at it all night.

You would never tell Nagi that though. But even if you didn't, it was clear he already knew.

The second you drew back, he pulled you back in, burying his face into the crook of your neck.

"I'm sorry." He repeated again. "I really am."

He withdrew from your neck a bit, and your gazes locked.

The rare sight of emotion in his flat orbs told you all you needed to know- and the pain in your heart subsided.

"I told you it's fine." Your smile returned. You laughed a bit while running a hand through his messy hair.

"It won't happen again." His voice took a slightly serious turn. "I promise."

When he dragged you closer to his body, and the two of you just silently enjoyed each other's company...... for a moment,

You couldn't help but believe him....

And that, turned out to be a great mistake. Your five month anniversary became six- your sixth became seven- your seventh became eighth- until you'd been officially together for eleven months. But he never remembered a single one.

On the Monday of your official one year anniversary, you walked through the school gates, a large box of chocolates in your hands.

"Morning, Y/N!" Reo was the first to greet you.

You smiled at the purple-haired male. "Morning, Mikage."

"I've told you a thousand times to call me Reo." He muttered- but instantly forgot his frustration when he noticed the chocolates you were holding.

"Are those for me?" He teased, his smile switching over to a smirk.

You playfully slapped his hand away from the box. "Not in your dreams. These are for Nagi."

"Yeah, I know." He let out a dramatic groan, rubbing his face with his hand. "Still can't believe that idiot got a girlfriend before me."

Your eyebrows narrowed in response. "You say this, knowing you could have ten girlfriends if you wanted."

As if on cue, a group of girls in the hallway burst into squeals.

"It's Reo!" They screamed and came rushing at him at once.

"And that's my cue to leave." You sighed, waving your friend goodbye before hastily hurrying off.

The whole school may have already known you and Nagi were dating, but Reo's fangirls were scary. They saw everyone and everything as competition.....and you personally wanted to live another day.

Besides, you had more important things to do right now, like finding Nagi.

And you knew exactly where to look.

You stepped out the school building. Your gaze traveled upwards and realized you guessed correctly.

Nagi sat perched on top of the school roof, playing one of his games on his phone. He always lounged over there before classes started- you tried talking him out of it many times, but it seemed he just held a weird obsession with that exact spot.

"Sei!" You waved a hand at him, using the other to hide the box behind your back. "Sei! Over here!"

After five minutes of frantic calling, you finally grabbed Nagi's attention.

"Oh, it's you Y/N." he mumbled, dropping his phone in his pocket. "What's wrong?"

You didn't say a word, just curled your index finger, beckoning for him to come down.

"Okay." He didn't hesitate to jump down the building.

Your e/c orbs widened, you hadn't expected him to just jump like that. You quickly jumped out of the way before the white-haired landed right on top of you.

"That was dangerous." You scolded him the moment he landed. "You could've seriously gotten hurt, you know."

He regarded your concern with a bored frown. "Why did you call me down here?"

You simply shook your head. There was just no use trying to talk sense into him. Instead, you handed him the chocolate.

"Happy one year anniversary, Sei!"

His dull eyes widened an inch, a familiar wave of regret flashing through his face. "Y/N, I-"

"I already know you forgot." You sighed. Your smile didn't falter though as you pointed at the box. "Just look inside."

He hummed a bit in confusion, but did as he was told and opened the box.

Dozens of different kinds of chocolates filled the container to the brim. What caught his immediate attention though was the strip of paper at the corner of it.

He slowly lifted the paper up for inspection.

"It's an invite to my match this Saturday." You said. "It's the finals."

Ever since you began middle school, you had developed a big- not even big- huge love for volleyball. It was crazy how just watching one match on TV had sparked such a passion. At first it was pretty difficult, but after a while you became incredibly good at the sport. Now you played for an official youth women's team as a wing spiker.

You ranted to Nagi about your big game thousands of times before, yet you still couldn't be a 100% sure if he actually remembered.

He nodded. "I remember."

You were pleasantly surprised, but didn't want to make it seem too obvious so you brushed it off with a cough. "Anyways, coach said we could invite one person of our choice to come for free. So with this, you don't have to pay to come."

"I see." He nodded again, this time in understanding. "Thank you."

You only smiled, ignoring the tight tension in your shoulders.

BRRRRIINGG

The school bell rung, signaling the start of classes.

"Oh, guess it's time." Nagi muttered. He shoved the box of chocolates into his bag before slinging it over his shoulders. "I'll see you late-"

"You're going to come, right?"

The words slipped out your mouth without warning. You tried to hold it back- you really did- but uncertainty twisted at your chest, making it hard to breath until the words finally came out on its own.

You didn't want to doubt Nagi. But, you did.

All the forgotten celebrations made you secretly insecure, as much as you forced yourself not to care.

But those were just anniversaries, many would still come (hopefully).

But your final match was happening only once. You wanted (needed) his support more than anything.....and if he didn't show......

Your head dropped in shame. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't doubt y-"

Your sentence cut short when you felt a large hand on your cheek. You looked up immediately, to be met with Nagi's face centimeters away from yours.

"I'll come." Is all he said as he rubbed your cheek with his bare thumb.

There was just something about the way the words rolled over in that calm voice of his that instantly put you at ease.

He then planted a quick kiss on your forehead.

"I'll see you later." He said before walking off.

For a moment, you just watched him leave, your heart thrumming in your chest. You snapped yourself out of it though and made your own way to your class too.

'Yeah...' You pushed all thoughts of uncertainty out of your mind. 'He's going to come.'

And you didn't want to imagine what would happen if he didn't.

"And that's how the Sunni Ottomans engaged in war with the Shi'a Safavids in the 17th century. After those series of events..."

BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH

You slumped your head against your table. 'Of all classes to have first period, why History?' You thought. 'I must have some really shitty luck.'

A sigh escaped your lips. You had to find something interesting to do, or you would quite literally pass away from boredom.

You raised your head and turned to your seatmate. "Hey, Rin." You whispered. "Want to play a game?"

"No." The dark-green haired boy didn't even do as much as blink in your direction.

You sighed, again. 'What was I thinking trying to talk to Itoshi Rin of all people anyway?'

But, after another aggravating minute passed by and you got tired of tapping your pencil on the table.....you decided to try again.

"You know, it's actually really unhealthy to frown that's much. I heard it's damaging to your mouth muscles."

Rin blinked, slightly raising an eyebrow as he said, "And where did you hear such a stupid thing?"

You shot him a close-eyed grin. "TikTok!"

Rin's frown deepened, muttering a "Tepid." under his breath before shifting his gaze back to the board.

The smile on your face slowly faded and you found yourself bored, again.

'If only Shidou wasn't suspended right now, he would've made this class interesting.'

You decided to text him, reaching for your phone in your pocket. Just before you could open the chat though, your eye caught sight of the reminder you made for your match.

'5 days, huh?' You smirked to yourself. All these years of hard work and training would finally pay off.

Your mind drifted into a daydream- one of you holding the champion trophy high in the sky alongside your team. The minute you walked off the court, Nagi would grab and pull you into a hug, where you practically gasped for air while being pressed against his large body.

You almost giggled at the thought of it.

Anticipation surged through your veins. You swiped the notification away, letting out a content sigh as you gazed out the window.

'Saturday....can't wait.'

Timeskip to Saturday morning

"Hurdle up for spiking drills!" Your team captain yelled.

Everyone filed unto the court, enthusiastic smiles on their faces as they warmed up for the impending game.

Everyone excluding you.

You peered down at Nagi's chat window for the 15th time this morning. He still hadn't replied to the message you sent asking if he was on his way.

Something sickening stirred in your gut.

"Hey, L/N!"

You swiveled backwards and were met with the face of one of your teammates.

"You okay?" she asked, slight concern laced in her tone. She walked over to you, placing a hand on your shoulder. "Captain said it's time for spiking drills."

"O-Oh. Right..." You awkwardly smiled, scratching the back of your head. "I was just a little spaced out, sorry."

"Well, you better pay more attention." Your teammate teased while flicking your forehead. "We need our ace to be in top form, especially today."

"You're right." You said with a sigh and finally set your phone down on the bench.

'He's going to come so stop stressing about it.' You told yourself.

"C'mon, let's go!" Your teammate ushered you towards the court. "We have a match to win!"

Immediately, your eyes lit up in fiery determination and you nodded.

"Yeah....let's do this!"

"Himari!" Your setter threw the ball towards the middle blocker.

She hit the ball with all her strength, but ended up being blocked.

Your eyes widened as the ball slowly descended to the floor. 'No....we were at match point. We were so close....'

Thankfully, your libero dived in at the last moment and sent it flying upwards.

"Alright!" Your setter exclaimed in relief, before sending the ball towards the left side of the court. "L/N!"

You were exhausted. Playing three whole sets completely drained your body, and your legs ached from all the jumping you'd done.

But, with the last bit of energy you had left, you sprung into the air- spiking the ball in a powerful line shot.

13-15

Everyone in the crowd screamed at the top of their lungs, just as your teammates rushed in and crushed you into a hug.

You couldn't believe it. You were too dumbfounded to say anything, even when your team captain hauled you onto her shoulders.

You won. You really won.

"Ladies and gentleman, our winners!" the announcer yelled, and the audience screamed even louder.

After a minute, your captain let you down. "Go."

"Hm?" You cocked your head to the side in confusion. "Go do what?"

"Go get us our trophy you idiot!" she laughed, tousling a hand in your hair. "C'mon, what are you waiting for?"

Your heart swelled so much tears almost threatened to spill from your eyes. You bit the underside of your lip to hold them back and rushed out the court to acquire it.

The trophy was definitely heavier than you thought it would be, but you managed to carry it.

"Congratulations." Your coach nodded at you. A small smile curved on her lips.

You gasped. She was never the warmest of people and practically never praised you or smiled.

At a loss for words, you could only muster a bow before returning to your team, trophy in hand.

When you all lined up for the photo, with your hands looped around each other and ecstatic grins on your faces.....a happy tear slipped down your face.

'This is much better than my daydream....'

In the aftermath of your match, you changed back into your casual clothes and walked through the stands. You could barely hold in your excitement- you just couldn't wait to see your boyfriend.

"Y/N!"

You turned in the direction of the familiar voice, a wide smile materializing on your face.

"Mikage!"

He jogged over to you and immediately enveloped you in a hug that almost knocked the breath out of your lungs.

"Congratulations!" He smiled when he finally released you. "You were amazing out there."

You scratched the back of your head, feeling your cheeks warm. "I wasn't that good."

"Are you kidding me?" The purple-haired's jaw dropped in disbelief. "You were the best player out there!"

"It's only because of my teammates that we were able to win." You smiled shyly. "They're the amazing ones."

Reo only sighed and shook his head. "You're too good for this world, you know that?"

You didn't know how to respond so you just laughed.

While you did, your eyes swept the area around him. Nagi and Reo were best friends, so if Reo was here that had to mean Nagi was close by.....right?

The sickening feeling from before churned in your stomach. Your laughter slowly faded, a subtle frown replacing it.

'He's probably in the bathroom...yeah...the bathroom.'

You and Reo conversed for a bit, before you asked the question plaguing your mind the entire conversation.

"Hey, Mikage....where's Sei?"

"You mean Nagi?" he asked. His smile shrunk a little.

'Oh no...' You felt another churn in your stomach- this time, however, it spread from your stomach all the way to your chest. 'Don't tell me.'

"I tried calling him, but he wouldn't answer my calls." He pulled out his phone, showing you the dozen unanswered calls. "That idiot....I kept telling him he couldn't miss it."

He continued talking, but your ears tuned him out. The same three words replayed over and over in your head.

'Nagi didn't come.'

'Nagi didn't come.'

'Nagi didn't come.'

'Nagi didn't come.'

'Nagi didn't come.'

'Nagi didn't come.'

All strength in your right hand left you, and you ended up dropping your phone by mistake.

"Shit!" Reo quickly reached for it before it fell on the floor. "That was close." He let out an exhale of relief. "Right Y/-"

His purple-orbs full on expanded when he stood up and saw your face.

Your shoulders trembled, your lips quivered, your eyes glistened with unshed tears. "He....didn't..." The words wobbled off your tongue as your throat tightened.

"He really didn't come..."

"Fuck!" Reo didn't hesitate to grab you and pull your body against his chest. "I'm so sorry, Y/N. I really am. I'm sure he just forgot. "

And that was the issue. He always forgot. If it wasn't your match- then it was your anniversary- if it wasn't your anniversary- then it was the dates you spent weeks planning.

'One match, I asked him to come for one match.'

In the midst of your sadness, you felt an unfamiliar surge of frustration roll through your body.

'I've always been there to help you, to guide you and support you....but you couldn't come for one match...'

In an instant, you made a decision.

You pulled away from the purple-haired, mustering a weak smile while you blinked your tears away.

'I can't do this anymore.'

"I'm going to use the bathroom." You told Reo. 'I'll be right back."

And with that, you sprinted off, your phone tightly clutched in your hand. Once you reached the bathroom, you slumped your body against a stall. With shaky fingers, you unlocked your phone before opening Nagi's chat window.

You tried so hard to forgive him for all of his mistakes- no matter how deeply they hurt you. But one could only forgive so much.

'I can't keep hurting myself like this.'

On a normal day, you were a fast typer, but today your hands moved at a sloth's pace as you typed.

There was no going back, and finally you sent the message that would alter the entirety of your relationship forever....

"It's over."
