Work Text:
It was weird, Chan knew that things should go well. Everyone told him that this would go well and yet he couldn’t stop the tremble in his hands nor stop his palms from sweating. What if they were wrong, what if this was just a huge mistake, what if the friendship he’d been working so hard for was ruined by this one act.
Everything had started a week ago, one conversation with Kim Hongjoong had started him down this path.
“So you're ok with this right?”
“Yeah, we weren’t compatible in that way. It’s fine.” He hummed resting a hand on the other man's shoulder, “But asking my permission was nice. Makes you come across as thoughtful, Seonghwa will like that.” He continued. The pair were where anyone in their shared friend group needed to go for a private conversation, behind the old set of bleachers behind the music block. Hongjoong returned to leaning against one of the steel poles holding up the seats, his hand running through his hair. “You know, Valentine's day is coming up, you should ask him then.
Chan’s face pulled into a frown, “Really? Isn’t that a bit cliche?”
“Yeah, but Hwa loves all that stuff.” He replied.
Chan couldn’t argue with that, Hongjoong had been by Seonghwa’s side for what seemed like forever. When he had met the pair they were dating, to be fair they broke up a couple weeks later but they were still pretty close. And from the time he personally had spent with Seonghwa Hongjong's observations had been correct. Seonghwa seemed to have an affinity for all things love and all the ways it could be expressed, physically, verbally, creatively and so on.
So it didn’t seem to hurt to listen to the younger man. Again Hongjoong wasn’t lying when he had said he had nothing to gain from messing up his chances with Seonghwa, the two weren’t together and hadn’t been for a long time, on top of that Hongjoong had been given every opportunity to get back with the man which he hadn’t taken.
So here he was standing outside of Seonghwa’s apartment with flowers in hand, of course he had let the other know he was going to be there as well as he wanted to talk about something but Seonghwa still seemed oblivious to what that something could be.
“Chan? Oh my- uhh!” Seonghwa gasped seeing the other man, his face falling into a clear example of shock, his eyes widening, his lips forming a perfect O shape.
Chan could only stand there taking in Seonghwa’s expression, regret setting in. “I’m so sorry, I shouldn’t have done this.”
“Oh no, come in.” His face fell into something worried as he guided the other inside. “I’m sorry I reacted badly, I was just shocked. Please sit, I just need to finish doing my hair.”
Seeing Seonghwa run off into his home, Chan dragged a hand over his face. He was an idiot, he should’ve not done this, Seonghwa was definitely going to hate him now, he was probably thinking of a way to let him down right now. His mind couldn’t quiet itself, the waiting only adding to his fears until Seonghwa returned.
“So, this is what you wanted to talk to me about?” He spoke, his voice a complete neutral as he placed the flowers to the side.
“Yeah.”
A small smile fell on Seonghwa’s lips as he opened the chocolate, placing one on his tongue before responding, “You’re asking me out on valentines day with chocolates and flowers?” He paused, “That’s so cute Chan, I love it. How did you think of this?”
Chan looked up at the shift of Seonghwa’s tone, pure excitement dripping from each word. His face sharing that same joy, the man’s eyes seeming to sparkle as ate another chocolate.
“Uhh, Hongjoong actually came up with the idea when I asked if it was ok that I asked.” Seeing the other grow more confused with the admission he continued. “He came up with the idea to do it on valentines day. The rest was me.”
“Why did you ask Joong?”
“Well, I know you’re important to him and he’s important to you so I just didn’t want to cause any friendship issues.” He explained.
Seonghwa’s expression softened again a warm smile tugging at his lips as he placed a hand on Chan’s “Aww, that’s so sweet. You’re really serious about this aren’t you.”
“More that I’m serious about you.” Seonghwa’s expression shifted, the man placing a hand on his chest, tears glossing over his eyes. “Please don’t cry.” He spoke, bringing Seonghwa’s hand to his lips, pressing a kiss to his knuckles.
“Sorry, it’s just that… it’s very sweet.” He muttered.
Chan smiled, “Seonghwa. You haven’t said whether or not you like me back. Not that it’s an issue you need your time to think about it since I just sprang it on you-”
“Chris, chill I like you too.” He brought his hand to his cheek pulling his face closer to his.
Chan chuckled seeing the honesty in his eyes, “Well can I take you out?”
“Of course, I’m free this evening or tomorrow if it’s short notice."
“Ok, tonight is good for me. But I will have to go change.” He replied.
Seonghwa only sighed, his head resting on the other’s chest as he leaned further down on the couch, a smile stuck to his lips. “Hmm, can you do that later? I'd like to have someone to finish these chocolates with. Also you can help pick a vase for the flowers.” He hummed.
“Do you not have one?”
“No. The only other guy to give me flowers was Hongjoong and those were legos.”
Chan chuckled at that, taking a strand of hair between his fingers, “Ok, then we can go get a vase.” He could worry about the fact that this was the first time the other had been given flowers later, right now he wanted to stay with the pretty boy in his arms.
