Work Text:
Particles of sand lingered around the home, marking the existence of a man now dead, no body for a widow to hold a funeral for, thanks to blue flames, according to the reports.
And there existed a form of bitterness towards Dabi, who’d taken her husband’s life, almost seemingly without any care for those left behind when he killed a Pro Hero like Snatch.
But then—
She stared in horror at Dabi’s reveal.
At first, when she saw Dabi come on, she simply felt disgust, anger, a whole mess of feelings, the last particles of sand that lingered around the house having been cleaned by the hands of family and friends who’d taken the time to help her out, some of them being Endevour’s sidekicks as the man knew just how impersonal they could be, and yet in the back of his head he’d not forgotten that—
Nor could she, the moment the truth came out of Dabi’s mouth, a hand clutching over her mouth, the horror setting in upon learning just who had killed her husband, who—
“Toya,” was the first word out of her mouth, resulting in those around her looking at her, giving her odd looks. “This isn’t you. This isn’t the happy child….”
But then, towards the end, things hadn’t been happy. In the end, when she and Sajin thought the boy dead, Toya was no longer the smiling, happy child, a child that Todoroki Enji cut off from practically everyone out of fear of the child being ostracized, misunderstood, but the distrust of the rest of the Todoroki family, of those who would say they were right in saying Enji shouldn’t marry Rei, or those who simply said the wrong thing and made Enji thing they didn’t understand—
Todoroki Enji and Rei did the unconventional thing and named godparents for their children, individuals who would hold legal guardianship over the children should anything happen to both parents, but in particular, since Toya’s supposed death, if anything were to happen to Enji while Rei was still recovering—
The Higawara couple were named godparents, being that Snatch was a Pro Hero close to Endevour who knew exactly what the family was going through with Toya, and yet Sekoto peak—
And now, she stood there, realizing Toya, the beautiful, smiling child who’d had all his dreams dashed because of a faulty Quirk, was the one who killed her Sajin and—
—disgust—
The disgust that existed before no longer existed, replaced with a different kind of pain, her mind wandering what Sajin would think knowing the young man who killed him that day was in fact the child that the couple knew, saw the excitement and spark in the eyes before it was dashed into a strange madness as Toya sought his father’s attention.
“That child.”
She couldn’t think of Dabi any other way after that, because—
Dabi was Toya.
