To Hug is to Hold All that is Dear.

Summary:

This is a The Grumpy and The Sunshine trope fic, with a fairytale-style retelling of the show.

It follows Tim and Lucy's journey through the seasons, told not through cases or conversation, but through their hugs and physical touch that changed them. As they move from strangers to partners, partners to lovers. As stone walls slowly give way to olive branch bridges.

A story about learning to let someone in, finding safety in another's arms, and discovering that sometimes the strongest guardian is the one who finally allows himself to be held in the arms of the bright sunshine.

Chenford Week, Day 6 - Prompt: Love Languages
(* A Deep Dive into Chenford's Hugs, being part of their physical touch love language.)

(I truly don't know how to summarize this fic; I tried my best tho. Sorry, but if a fic centered on Chenford's hugs interests you at all, then this fic might be for you.)

Notes:

Happy Chenford Week!!

OKAY READING HEADS UP:
This is not written like a typical fanfic; it is much more of a creative interpretation, like a modern fairy tale and/or Fable written about the iconic Chenford hugs. It is meant to be a little whimsical and very uniquely different, especially compared to anything else I've written.
I’m not even sure if this fic makes sense… but I’m trying to imagine that that’s how this story is meant to be. (Though I do hope it makes sense)

Sorry I don’t know what else to say, I’ve had this concept idea for doing something with Physical Touch and their hugs, for a while now, But the writing style and the fairy tale aspect is me being very sleep-deprived!

Thanks!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Once upon a time…

In the city of angels built from concrete and sirens, was home to The Grumpy and The Sunshine.

Two opposites the world would have never believed could work so well as one... But with time… they did.

-The Grumpy- Stone cold it was as if he was practicaly a man made of stone. Like he was chiseled directly out of tactical lines and unyielding desire to uphold the rules. He had spent his life building a what would be cowardly fortress around his heart, believing that to protect everything he… wanted to love, he must let nothing touch him near and dear. And so he wore extra body armor under his uniform and over his chest along with a legendary scowl over his face that scared away the masses. As he moved through the world like a storm cloud looking for a place to strike. He believed vulnerability was a liability on the streets, an open door that invited ruin...

He was Grumpy.

-The Sunshine- A woman built of light, empathy, and stubborn courageous grace. She did not believe in building fortresses; she believed in creating bridges… Bridges were connection’s.

Where The Grumpy saw a threat, the Sunshine saw a brocken soul. Where he commanded silence, she spoke in a way that made heavy air feel lighter, carrying an unwavering belief that humanity could be saved. And she believed that good can be found, no matter how dark a fortress became.

Two people headstrong on protecting their city… though there methods would vary.

By the decree… and luck of the station selection, their fates were sealed once they were bound to ride together in a great chariot called the shop, patrolling the borders between peace and choas… and darkness.

The Grumpy was destined to teach his assignment about the world, to harden her for the cruel realities of the job. The Sunshine was destined to learn about all those in the world, yet somehow retain her warmmth.

What a unique pair for them to have been.

For a long time, they road side by side, dusk to dark, daily shift traviling throughout the city. Keeping a strict, deliberate arm's length between each other, because nothing more could ever occur… right? They are opposite after all.

The Grumpy believed that if he let her get too close, the softness of her nature would blunt his sharp edge, and his bluntless would unly cut her light deeper in the prosses, making them both weak. And weakness was what killed you… and your heart.

While The Sunshine knew that if she pushed too hard against his stone walls, they would only grow taller and thicker, and jagged. And so, they communicated only in the language of the realm: sharp orders given, protocols strictly followed, no personal talk in the shop… boot, and eyes constantly watching the horizon… to not let lingering eyes ever connect...

But the body has a language that the uniform cannot censor. In their world, danger was a shadow that always lingered, and they learned that when the ground gives way, words are too slow. Only an embrace could close the distance…

Only… physical touch…

But The Grumpy won’t let The Sunshine into his guarded walls, till he finally fears of her light dimming…

~ ~ ~

The first true physical shift was born of absolute terror. Life altering… almost life ending… terroir.

It was the day the shadows of the city swallowed The Sunshine whole, trapping her deep beneath the dirt in a dark, suffocating barrel where the air was thin and the dark was absolute.Cut off from the world, she herself was letting go of her light, slipping into the cold quiet of the earth… breath became slow… unsure if she’d ever breath again.

The Grumpy, struck by a terror he had never permitted himself to feel, when he finally saw a shinny glimmer of light… her light she left in a trail of light to follow to were she layed beneath the surface... And so he tore at the earth, the ground, and dug the dirt with his bare hands. He dug until his fingers could have bled, driven by a primal panic that shattered his icy cold composure. When he finally shattered the metal barrier and pulled her up into the sunlight in the blinding sky, she was limp, cold, and nothing but slipping away…

He did not think of protocol then. He did not think of his fortress or his reputation. He reached out and gathered her into his arms on the dry sandy dust lands of the desert. He didn't just give her CPR, he held her as if he could force his own life force back into her lungs, with the terrifying realization that gravity is a fickle thing, and that the earth can swallow what you unconsciously love in the blink of an eye.

"I’ve got Her! I’ve Got Her!!” His voice broke, a raw sound cuting through the sound of sirense, helcopters and others rising to their side.

As she gasped for air, coughing up the dust of her own grave, his massive hand locked protectively around the back of her neck and head, pulling her face into his chest. He became a fierce, instinctive shield against the rest of the world, wrapping his large frame entirely around her small, shivering body. His fingers tangled in her hair, pressing her close enough to absorb his heat… he had warmth?

Yes, but it was a new discovery. The Grumpy had warmth deep within him.

In that embrace, The Sunshine found her breath, grounding herself in the solid reality of his chest. And The Grumpy found his flaw: he was no longer made of stone.

The colde Grumpy instructor had vanished for a moment completly, replaced by a desperate realization: the world would be entirely dark if she were gone. And he needed the light… He needed her light.

 ~ ~ ~

As the days went on and on as they so often do, the nature of their journeys changed. The fortress did not fall all at once, not at all, but rather a few stone started crumbling. They became equals on the streets, with The Sunshine making it threw her traning whaile still retaninging her light. But they also became students of each other, learning from one another, gowing together, but still not waing to fall into to speaking entirely in the compression of being in their arms just yet. The Grummy and The Sunshine are only friends... right... far to polar opposites for anything more... right?

When tragedy struck again and a piece of her soul was torn away with the sudden loss of her best friend, the apartment walls felt like they were closing in on her. She had nowhere to put her grief, and the sheer volume of her sorrow was rapidly extsinguishing her light. Pale and hollow, she arrived at his door, where he was waiting, as a steady wall in the middle of her raging river of tears.

When they fell into each other's space, a subtle habit was born, a shared definition of what it meant to provide shelter.

"Do you need...anything?"

"The last 24 hours back."

"I'm afraid I don't have that power." Nobody does... time just couniues to take... tick... tick... tick...

It was hesitant... "A hug. "she whispered, her voice cracking.

"Yeah. Come here," he replied, his tone softer than the world had ever heard it. "It's okay."

He stepped forward, eliminating the space between them. Whenever they embraced from that moment on, The Sunshine hand found its home directly over his heart. She would slide her palm flat against his chest, feeling the heavy, rhythmic thud beneath his shirt, while leaning her forehead against his shoulder right over that steady, thumping cadence.

It was a quiet confirmation for them both… something was different between the two of them. An awkward recognition. He wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her flush against him, letting his large bulk block out the rest of the universe. He held her… till he wanted more, for which he could not have.

So they let go... left only with their thoughts.

~ ~ ~

The armor didn't just protect him from suspects on the street; it was orginaly pu on to protect him from his own past.

But one rainy night, after facing the ghosts of a cruel father, his armor finally cracked open completely. Standing in the dim light of that room, looking at that man, he confessed his deepest, darkest fear into the space, admitting that the harshness viloce used on him as child, made him fear that his sharp edged he build around himself would inenvertanly make him turn out exactly like the man who had hurt him as a child

The Sunshine and all her light stood outside waiting...She didn't offer a lecture or a professional analysis, like she could have. She simply stepped into his space, bypassed his defensive posture, and wrapped her arms around him.

For the first time, the roles completely reversed.  As Every fortress eventually meets the one light it cannot keep outside...

The tall, unbending The Grumpy let his heavy head drop onto her shoulder, burying his face in her warmth, her light, letting her take his full weight. He slumped into her, his broad shoulders shaking slightly as the centuries of built up armor dissolved.

"You are nothing like him," she whispered into the dark. Her lips brushing his ear, to really ensure he heard... "You are nothing like him!"

She held him with a fierce, grounding strength that locked him in place, her hands splayed wide across his back, anchoring his spirit to the true man he was... Stone cold hardness didn't make you cruell. Through the simple act of holding him tightly, she absorbed the poison of his doubts, refusing to let him pull away into his old habits of isolation.

Maybe the world was what had made him Grumpy... Maybe the anger was just a shield he didn't need anymore... Maybe he's not maent to be The Grummpy at all.

Maybe he was always simply ment to be The Guardian to others he left himself care about... others he let in.

~ ~ ~

When the world, or rather when they themselves finally allowed them to belong to each other, to finally hold each other in their hearts, the nature of their touch shifted from a desperate rescue of a scared routine from when they needed immediate comfort from the darkness and cold, to one freely given and filled with an overwhelming amount of... love.

After a long, harrowing day on the streets that tested every ounce of their resilience, they finally left the armor of the precinct behind and stepped into her quiet apartment. There were no sirens here, no eyes watching, and no boundaries or lines left to cross... but one...

Her fingers tugged at his shirt, pulling the fabric away from his skin with a gentle, urgent need to feel the solid heat beneath... Remember he has warmth. His hands slid down to her hips, his touch firm yet incredibly tender, guiding her steps as he walked her back against the doorframe. As they came to a stop, his palm automatically rose to cradle the back of her head, protecting her from the hard corner of the wood with a practiced, protective instinct that was entirely second nature to him now. He leaned into her, pressing his forehead against hers, closing his eyes just to breathe in the familiar scent of her hair and let the lingering adrenaline of the shift finally wash away.

Behind closed doors, the quiet apartment became the center of this universe. He lifted her up into his arms, and she wrapped her legs around his waist, grounding them both. Their hands roamed each other's skin, stripping every last piece of armor away. They shed both the physical barrier of their clothing and the secret, silent defenses he had formed in the mental channels of his brain to protect his heart from ever having the chance to hurt again. Without the uniforms, without the badges, they were entirely laid bare, exposed and beautifully untethered.

Tonight they were loving, fully and intimately, moving together with a slow, reverent pace that drank in every single sensation. Whispered words of "I love you" were beautiful, breathed softly into the space between their lips, but they were nothing compared to the raw truth of skin to skin, of warm, passionate friction in the quiet room. Every stroke of his hands along her curves, every gentle press of her fingernails into the muscles of his back, was a confession.

There was no way he was the Grumpy that night. Instead, he fell fully into the role of the ultimate Guardian. As they moved together into the soft expanse of the bed, he held her securely in his arms and cocooned her completely under him. He shifted his large weight to shield her, hovering over her like a sacred canopy, making sure not an ounce of the dark, cold outside world could ever reach her in this moment.

He kissed her deeply, his mouth worshiping hers, mapping the line of her jaw and the curve of her throat until she was breathless beneath him. Her hands slid up his chest, her palm finding that familiar home directly over his heart, feeling it hammer a frantic, devoted rhythm against her fingertips. She arched into his touch, pulling him down closer, matching his intensity with a fierce devotion of her own.

This moment she was his, and he was hers, and their love, their touch, was entirely sacred, as they came completely undone in each other's embrace.

~ ~ ~

Even after the darkness of his own making tore them apart, after a painful breakup left a cold canyon growing between them bigger than it had ever been before, the distance proved unbearable. His withdrawal, his decision, was the direct cause of her dimmed light, leaving them both wandering through a gray, painful existence.

The Guardian? No, he was the cause of her dimmed light. He had hurt her himself. He had let down his walls, let her into his fortress, into his heart, and he didn't protect her from him. He was no Guardian.

But was he really just meant to be the Grumpy? Or was he more of a Gloomy?

The Gloomy had isolated himself, retreating back into his old, dark patterns of self-punishment after the ghosts of his past resurfaced. But after the harrowing weight of an investigation and the brutal trauma of watching a former brother-in-stoney-arms fall, fall down, dead, the cold facade finally broke. The the iron lift of the station opened to reveal a simple truth: the uniform couldn't erase what had been written in their hearts and their bones.

Standing in the enclosed metal box, the exhaustion of the job and the weight of their unspoken love finally collided. The dimmed, but still Sunshine, looked at her Gloomy, seeing how close he was to completely shttering under the guilt he was forcing himself to carry alone. She didn't let him hide behind his walls. With a sharp, decisive click, she halted the the iron lift, forcing the world to pause.

The lines they had drawn between them dissolved back into truth, unable to withstand the gravity pulling them together. She stepped forward into the familiar, sacred shape of each other's arms that molded perfectly for this touch.

When The Sunshine let him in close, his hands did not just rest on her back; they gripped her stiff uniform jacket, his fingers bunching the dark fabric as he traced the line of her spine. He pulled her so close that no air, no danger, and no distance could fit between them. She may have been dimed by the time apart, but she still had her warmth deep within her, and it radiated through him the moment their chests met. She locked her arms around…

"Are you okay?" the question hung in the air, muffled against his uniform.

"I am now," came the quiet, raw reply from above her head.

One embrace could not mend every wound, but it reminded them the bridge they once walked still stood. it was good, it was needed. They needed each other like they needed air to breathe, and the time of loss apart had been cold, dim, and dark.

This hug was an act of survival. In the tight compression of her arms, The Gloomy finally realized that isolating himself was a punishment from himself, not a protection for her. The absolute safety of her touch proved that he could no longer rebuild his lone fortress. Holding her gave him the courage to stop hiding in the dark, reminding him that if he wanted to survive, it was finally time to open his heart, lean on the people who loved him, and start finding help to build a bridge back to the light, for a final time.

He would not hide in the darkness.

~ ~ ~

When the world burned, the canyon between them didn't matter anymore.

A monstrous wildfire had swept through the land, trapped by a wall of advancing flames that turned the very air into thick, choking poison. The two had been forced onto the ground beneath a thin, heat-reflective fire shield. In those terrifying minutes, as the fire roared over them like a furious beast, there had been no room for the complex pain of their breakup… hardly any room for emotional words as a whole…

There was only a plea to be okay.

The Sunshine needed to hear they'd be okay, her light trembling against the suffocating dark. She had reached out through the blinding smoke, clutching his uniform with her hand tightly while he desperately tried… oh so desperately tried to be the Guardian in the dark, using his large body to shield her as the fire passed over them.

As they finally stumbled out of the ash, the dynamic irrevocably shifted. The threat was over, the adrenaline was fading, leaving behind raw exhaustion and the heavy realization of how close they had just come to ending right there, their entire story nearly reduced to ash and cinder… what a way to just be gone in a minute of endless ticking time.

They stood by the side of the road, covered in soot, coughing the gray dust out from their lungs. The emergency sirens of the city were buzzing around them, but the noise of the scene was completely distant… out of reach yet they were coming for them.

The Gloomy didn't try to hide behind his walls this time, and The Sunshine didn't try to force a smile. Instead, they simply collapsed inward toward each other.

It wasn't a dramatic, sweeping embrace born of panic. It was a heavy, symbiotic leaning, a quiet rearrangement of their shared universe. He dropped his weight sideways into her, his shoulder catching hers, and she instantly leaned right back, molding her side against his. Her head came to rest against his shoulder, her helmet long gone, her dark hair smelling heavily of smoke. His arm came up, heavy and tired, wrapping securely around her upper arm to lock her against his ribs.

They became each other’s crutch, sharing a single physical center of gravity because their legs were too shaky to hold them up alone against the aftermath of the storm.

In the quiet compression of that leaning touch, the truth settled between them. When The Guardian had faced the end beneath that fire shield, he had made his priorities entirely clear, admitting to the universe that his focus had always been her. Leaning into her side now, smelling the ash on her uniform, he didn't feel like a broken Gloomy anymore. He didn't feel like the man who had only brought gloom. He wanted to feel like a partner.

The Sunshine felt it too, her side pressed firmly against his heart, grounding his lingering tremors. She wasn't ready to let go of her boundaries or skip the healing they both desperately needed, but as she closed her eyes against the soot on his jacket, she knew she wasn't letting go of him… even if they didn’t quite yet have each other back... yet.

~ ~ ~

The long, agonizing wait of their broken apart spirits finally came to an end when the canyon between them was bridged for the last time. The Gloomy had done the hard work of pulling himself out of the dark, dismantling the final, stubborn ruins of his fortress so that he could truly be worthy of the title of Guardian, building his side of the bridge like an olive branch. And the Sunshine had kept her light burning, waiting for the warmth to return to the man who held her heart.

It happened on the edge of the concrete city, at the beginning of the horizon line, at the very precipice of morning, colors filling the sky.

Standing there, looking out over the water, the time for dancing around the truth had expired. The Guardian looked at her, his voice devoid of the old sharp orders of the realm, carrying a quiet, terrifying vulnerability instead as he promised to be a better communicator, a man who would never use his walls, his past, or his old wondes to shut her out again.

The Sunshine got brighter and brighter as she looked back at him, acknowledging the deep, painful scars of the heartbreak he had caused, but when she spoke, her light didn't dim, and she continued to build her bridge to him, a bridge of love, a bridge of communicating. She built until it was their light that flared into something blindingly brilliant across the sky along with the morning sun.

She may have been the one who asked him to "Just say Yes."

But she was the one who said yes to him, yes to moving into his home, yes to the future they had both been too terrified to claim during their time apart.

The embrace that followed was an absolute explosion of pure, unadulterated happiness.

There was no hesitation left in the space between them. The Guardian stepped forward and swept her completely into his arms, catching her body against his chest with a desperate, joyful sigh. The Sunshine laughed into the morning air, a bright smile pressed against his lips in a kiss. Her arms wrapped fiercely around his neck, locking him into a closed circuit of touch that truly showed how deeply this moment was deserved over the so many long months apart.

The Guardian held her tightly against him while the sunrise bathed them in golds brought on by the sun coming up into the sky, as it two wanted to see this momant. his large hands splaying across her back, pressing her so tight that she could feel the frantic cadence of his heart through his clothes. He swayed her slightly in the early light, a rugged Guardian and his beautiful Sunshine, crushing her into a hug so filled with relief and triumph that the rest of the world dissolved.

They were a unique pair, entirely restored together , celebrating a romantic reunion that proved their polar opposites were always meant to be one.

~ ~ ~

They realized that their love language was not one of words, which could be misinterpreted or twisted by fear, but of physical touch. In a world of high-stakes splits and unpredictable danger, words were often a luxury they couldn't afford or weapons they accidentally used against each other. But a closed circuit of touch left no room for doubt.

To press tightly was to say, I have you. To hold on a second too long was to say, Do not leave.

Every shift of weight, every press of a chin against the crown of a head, and every hand flat against a beating heart became their private dialect. It was a language born in the front seat of a shop car, refined through trauma, and perfected in the quiet corners of their sanctuary. To hold each other was to press pause on the chaos of the world outside, turning the Grumpy into the ultimate Guardian, kept alive by the enduring glow of his Sunshine. They were no longer two people fighting the dark alone; they were an unbreakable anchor against the storm...

A Storm...

A oncoming storm... that brings darkess...

~ ~ ~

They had walked out onto the sandy shores of the local beach, the rhythmic crashing of the waves echoing the passage of endless ticking time. The Guardian had spent days panicking overwhere to hide the golden ring of promise, utilizing the very habits of observation he had taught her when she just stepped into his life, years ago in that shop. Standing by the water, he finally beared his soul completely, telling her that he used to believe the world was an entirely dark place until she showed him just how much light truly existed. He told her she had healed places in him he didn't even know were broken, and with a promise to spend the rest of his life proving worthy of that love, he asked her to marry him.

The Sunshine gave him her tearful, radiant "Yes", and they collapsed inward into the most beautiful, sacred hold of their lives.

It was a brilliant, sweeping embrace under the warm glow of the fading sunset. He pulled her flush against his large frame, wrapping his arms around her waist to lift her slightly, absorbing her into his warmth while she clung to his neck, her fingers tangling into his hair. They held each other with a fierce, possessive joy, their hearts thummping in perfect unison, creating a bubble of absolute safety on the coast line. The Guardian buried his face against her hair, holding her so tightly that no air, no danger, and no past trauma could ever find a way between them. The Sunshine slid her hand flat over his chest, feeling the steady thud of the heart that belonged entirely to her, closing her eyes as they basked in the golden hour of their monument of happiness. They were blissfully anchored in a perfect, endless loop of love, entirely consumed by the physical pressure of a promise made real.

But time is a monster that always continues to take, ticking away the seconds when your guard is dropped, waiting to strike when the light is at its brightest.

The sunset dipped away, and a sudden, jarring eeriness crept onto the beach. The beautiful sanctuary was abruptly, violently shattered.

Two creatures wearing the face of kindness approached…  under the guise of congratulations for the two connected souls, but before a warning could flash in the Guardian's eyes, a cold bite pierced their skin.

A brutal, terrifying ambush descended upon them out of the cooling dark. The world began to spin, going hazy and gray as their legs grew heavy and shaky, the sudden physical weight of someone tearing them from their safe haven found in each other.

As the dark consciousness threatened to swalow them whole, they didn't try to fight the shadows, they tried to find each other.

In a desperate, panicked frenzy, their hands reached out across the sand, their fingers straining wildly across the widening gap, trying to grab hold of each other's touch. All they wanted was each other. They tried to find one last compression of safety before the darkness took them completely, as time kept ticking on... and on... and on...

Tick...

...Tick...

...Tick... Tick...

~ ~ ~

The Lesson:

The world will always try to strip away what matters most, piece by piece, if you let it, and even if you don’t. Time always takes, with each second that it ticks. Safety isn't a place, and it isn't behind the walls you build up when you're alone. It’s the fierce, unyielding choice to open your arms wide, revealing your unguarded heart to the world, and to then wrap them around the person who holds your soul. As a hug is to hold all that is dear.

So please go hug all that is dear... To you!

For time will just keep ticking away...
