Chapter Text
“I wanna meet you in a slow dance, I wanna meet you but it’s too soon..”
Mimi swayed along with the crowd to the energetic song her favourite band was playing. Rebel and Ada were holding hands and dancing, occasionally bumping into Mimi. Gentu, her best friend, was currently going to the bathroom, and that left Mimi alone for the moment. This was THE dancing song. Mimi sighed, slumping her shoulders as the lights began to flash through the crowd. She seemed to be the only one who couldn’t dance with someone.
Mimi left to move to a less crowded spot. Shifting through the crowd, she accidentally bumped into someone, causing her a tumble onto the floor.
“Oh my gosh, I am so sorry-” Mimi was cut off by a hand reaching out to her. She looked up, seeing a girl with blue hair, grinning a bright smile.
“It’s alright. Are you okay?” Her words flowed with her voice, soothingly mixing through the loud crowd. Mimi could only nod, and took her hand. Standing up, the girl introduced herself. “My name is Jenny. How about you?” Jenny opened her eyes, a beautiful hazel with a thin yellow ring surrounding her pupils.
“My name is Mimi! It’s nice to meet you, Jenny.” Mimi gave her a soft smile. At first glance, Jenny was cool, and she probably looked like a loser.
“So. Are you here with someone, or are you here solo?” As much as Mimi would love to occupy herself from her loneliness, she didn’t want to hold Jenny up if she was here with someone. Jenny shifted, lowering her head with a shameful smile.
“Ah, solo. I don’t really have anyone to talk to nowadays. You?”
“I’m with friends, but they all abandoned me. Y’know, to dance with eachother.” Mimi tried looking above the crowd, reminded about how Gentu was M.I.A. Unfortunately, no one had come out of the bathroom yet.
They began to chat about their everyday life while stomping their feet to the beat of the song, describing their dailies to each other.
“I mean, these days are tough. I work solo on a self-made delivery business, and it’s really hard to keep up with that when I also have band practice.” Mimi sighed, bring her hands together and slightly tapping her left with her index finger.
“Woah, you’re in a band?! That’s sick! What are they called?” Jenny’s eyes lit up.
“We… don’t have a name yet, but we’ve been playing for about 3 years now. It’s… more of a side hobby, to be honest. I don’t know, I just feel like I’m in a loop or something, same thing everyday.”
“Honestly, I feel you there, I’m just a receptionist at a broke Premier Inn. There’s like, a billion other premier inns that are actually well kept and frequently renewed. But nothing has changed, I swear I’ve seen it all from the desk to down the hall. It never changes, but the seasons do, I’ve been there so long…” Jenny took her own right hand and began to slap her pocket quietly.
The lead guitar starts the intermission of the song
They both stood and listened to the intermission
“Hey… would you like to dance with me? Since the climax of the song is coming up, and we don’t have anyone else to dance with?” Jenny looked at Mimi, as if that question was nothing. And she was right, it was nothing.
“Oh! Sure!” Mimi took Jenny’s hands.
I wanna meet you in a slow dance, I wanna meet you when it’s too soon!
They swayed together, following the steps of the crowd. Jenny spun with Mimi, until abruptly stopping to seperate to do the choreogrophy on their own.
Right, left, right left, right, left, right, down, up!
They came back together, laughing and smiling as the rest of the song played out. Mimi looked at Jenny, who was looking at her feet to make sure she wouldn’t step on anyone as she moved back and forth. And then she looked up at Mimi. She smiled a real smile at her. A small pain in her gut, she described it like a bruise, began to arise in Mimi’s stomach as she smiled back at Jenny, but she set it aside. She wanted to dance before she got a stomach ache.
Or dare across the room, but I am trying, so hard……
The crowed cheered as everyone stopped dancing with eachother. Mimi and Jenny threw their fists up into the air and hailed at the top of their lungs as Osmosis began to start.
---------------
As the concert ended, the crowd began to exit out of the doors. Mimi was one to follow, as she did have band practice in an hour time. She thanked the worker who held the door open for her, and made it to the front of the theatre with Gentu, Rebel, and Ada. The bustling cold night shouted, reminiscing on the warmth of the concert.
Mimi opened up the uber app on her phone, and scrolled through the options a bit before selecting a driver named “Atlas” to take them back to the apartment. She turned off her phone, and watched as Gentu and Rebel began to sing Wall together as Ada stood beside Rebel, Her hand intertwined with his. Mimi was about 3 feet away from them, and she didn’t feel like butting in and joining their conversation. She felt rather… distant, from her friends. Rebel had been the most distant of all, for Mimi and Gentu often got in pointless arguments with him. The band had been slowly breaking apart, so what was the point in talking to them now?
“Hey, Mimi!” She turned around. Jenny was at the front of the entrance, about 15 feet away from Mimi. She was running toward her, waving her hand far up in the air.
“Jenny!” Mimi’s face lit up as Jenny had come to be in front of her. Jenny took out a small yellow post-it note and began to scribble on it with a blue pen. Mimi was tempted to peek over, interested in what she could be writing, but Jenny had it out in front of her before she could.
“Here. This is my number! I really liked talking to you, and I uh, maybe… can we hang out sometime?”
Mimi could’ve been called a deer in headlights, but she truly didn’t know how to respond without squealing her head off.
“Ah- yeah sure!” Mimi’s eyes brightened, voice cheery.
Shit was that too needy?
Jenny smiled. “Great. I’ll look forward to it, Mimi.” Jenny began to walk away, and Mimi watched her before turning towards the cinema she had come out of.
Mimi had made a new friend.
Someone outside of the band.
