Work Text:
Buck and Eddie have been dating since shortly after the tsunami.
Eddie didn't want to be apart from either Christopher or Buck after it happened, so the blonde stayed over at Eddie's more than at his own loft. In the process, they confessed their deep love for each other that they'd been holding in for months, made out in Eddie's kitchen, then fell into a tangled heap of limbs in Eddie's bed.
That next morning, they talked more in detail about what they wanted.
They wanted to be together forever, but started as boyfriends. They wanted to do it right.
So they did. They became boyfriends.
But only for a few months, then Buck filed the lawsuit.
Buck only meant to try to get his job back. He didn't want to lose his family, or his boyfriend, or their son.
But he did.
And he regretted it instantly because he ruined everything good in his life.
He doesn't think that he'll ever get any of it back.
After Buck filed the lawsuit and was told that he can’t have any contact with the 118—his family—he packed up all of his stuff from Eddie’s and locked himself in his loft while he waited out the lawsuit, and then he’ll try and repair what he broke.
He doesn’t know if he’ll ever get his family, boyfriend, or son back, but he’s going to try his damned hardest to do so because he needs them like he needs air to survive.
Buck just wanted to get his job back and work with his family again, not sue them and ruin his relationships with them.
Buck knows it’s over with him and Eddie forever at the arbitration hearing where Mackey, unbeknownst to Buck, reveals secrets about each member of his family.
Mackey then tells Buck he could win millions because the city wants to settle the lawsuit.
Buck denies the offer and walks out of Mackey’s office.
All he wants is his job and family back.
But now, because of Chase Mackey, Buck won’t get either back.
Which is how we got to here: Buck locked up in his loft apartment, vomiting his guts out in his toilet.
Buck has been doing that a lot these past couple of days, waking up with the urge to vomit, certain foods and smells also causing him to have to throw up.
Buck has no idea what the fuck is going on.
Karma probably from his mistake.
After three weeks of what feels like constant vomiting, Maddie shows up at his door.
“Mads? What are you doing here?” Buck asked, his voice hoarse from the lack of needing to talk lately.
She looks at him with pure sadness in her eyes, throwing her arms around him, holding him close.
“Oh, Evan.”
Buck breaks down in her arms. “I’m sorry, Maddie. I’m so sorry. I just wanted my job back.”
She rubs his back comfortingly. “I know. I know. Shh, I know.”
She stays with him the whole night, taking him to the ER the next morning to figure out why he’s been throwing up so much.
Buck is so happy to have his sister back.
They’re waiting in the exam room for the doctor to return with the results of his tests at the ER when Buck asks her, “Why did you come over yesterday?”
She smiles at him and takes his hand.
“Because I missed you, baby brother. And I was worried about you. Everyone is.”
Buck nods, ignoring the last part because it’s a total lie. “I missed you too, Mads.”
“Buck. We miss you.”
Buck shakes his head, his eyes threatening to mist over. “I messed up and ruined all of the important relationships in my life.”
She squeezes his hand harder, leaning closer to him. “No, you didn’t. Bobby wants you back for work, you know? Athena misses you too…everyone misses you and wants to fix everything.”
“R-Really?” Buck squeaks.
Maddie nods firmly. “Yeah. They really do. We’re all family, Buck. It’s not the same when a member is missing.”
“I-I’ll think about it.”
“Buck,” she tries, but before Buck can cut her off, the doctor returns with a smile on her face.
“Well, Mr. Buckley, we know why you’ve been getting sick a lot lately.”
Buck’s attention is immediately piqued. “And?”
She smiles wider. “Congratulations, you’re pregnant.”
Pregnant??!?!
“W-What?” Buck stutters, staring at the doctor in disbelief.
“Did you not know that you’re a carrier?” She then asks, looming between the siblings.
Buck and Maddie shake their heads.
“H-How far along?” Buck has to ask.
“A little over six weeks.”
Yup. It’s Eddie’s.
Fuck.
Buck is pregnant with his best friend/ex-boyfriend’s baby.
Buck holds in his breakdown until he’s back in his loft, Maddie holding him as he sobs in her arms on his couch.
“It’s Eddie’s,” he weeps. “It’s Eddie’s baby.”
“Oh, Evan,” she soothes, rubbing his back and kissing his forehead. “It’ll all work out. I know it will.”
Buck wants to believe her; he truly does, but he can’t.
Eddie hates him.
Buck can never tell him who the baby belongs to.
No one can know…but Eddie deserves to know that they’re having a kid together—another kid.
Fuck!
Buck hates this.
He doesn’t know what to do anymore.
Buck is two months pregnant when he finally decides to call Bobby to come back to work.
The older man is very understanding about Buck’s distance from everything and very open as to why he didn’t let Buck come back to work after the tsunami.
It was a long and tearful conversation, but they really needed it to fix what was broken.
Athena joined the two after a little while and held her son close, telling her that she loves him so much and that she always will, no matter what happens.
Buck feels better than he has in the past two months, getting to talk with the two people who took him in after joining the 118, loving him anyway.
After they all wipe away their tears, Athena offers to bring in some wine to celebrate.
“I can’t do alcohol for the next eight months.”
The couple’s eyes go wide as they stare at him.
“Baby, you’re pregnant?” Athena asks.
Buck nods. “Y-Yeah. So guess I’ll be needing to work light duty until the baby is born.”
The two chuckle and then hug him again, deciding soda would be better instead.
Buck loves his family.
He just hopes that the rest of them can forgive him as easily as Maddie, Bobby, and Athena did.
Being pregnant is hard.
But Buck wouldn’t change it for the world; he loves his and Eddie’s baby so much.
He’s been back at the 118 officially for a week now and has been avoiding Eddie amazingly.
He has talked with Hen and Chim though, telling them how fucking sorry he is for what he did.
“It’s okay, Buckaroo,” Hen tells him, then hugs him tight. “You did what you had to do to get your job back. I definitely would’ve done the same.”
He smiles at her appreciatively.
“We missed you around here, dude,” Chimney says with a grin, bro hugging Buck.
“Missed you too, Chim.”
Buck spots Eddie in the corner of his eye, watching them with a happy yet sad smile.
Buck does everything he can to not run into Eddie’s arms, begging the man to take him back.
He just can't face Eddie yet.
But at least he got Hen and Chimney back.
Despite everything with Eddie, things are looking up.
Maybe everything will work itself out.
Buck hasn’t had any nausea or morning sickness since he’s been back at work…well, except for today.
Buck has no clue what it was that caused it, but it hit hard.
He’s never run for the bathroom faster in his life.
Buck is on his knees, literally puking his guts out when he feels warm, familiar hands on his back that he hasn’t felt in so fucking long.
“It’s okay, mi amor, I’m here, I’m not going anywhere.”
Fuck. Buck wants to fucking cry.
Eddie stays by his side until he’s done, then helps him stand, wipes off his face, flushes the toilet, holds him up while he brushes his teeth, then walks with Buck into the bunk room.
Buck passes out along the way, Eddie instantly catching him and carrying him bridal-style to one of the bunks in the far corner.
Buck wakes feeling a hand in his hair, lying in the bunk room, his head in Eddie’s lap.
Oh…shit…
Buck remembers now.
He was throwing up, and Eddie helped him with everything.
God, Buck misses him so much.
His eyes quickly start to mist over as he breaks down. "I know we are not together anymore, but I'm pregnant with our baby, and I can't do this alone…I need you. Eddie, I need you.”
“Shh, shh, cariño. I’m here.”
Buck bolts upright and meets Eddie’s eyes. “Eddie, I just told you that I’m pregnant and that’s the reaction I get!?”
Eddie chuckles, happy tears in his eyes. “I was just keeping calm for you.” Eddie’s lips turn up into a hopeful smile. “You’re really pregnant?”
Buck sniffles and nods. “Y-Yeah. I-I’m a carrier apparently.”
Eddie yanks Buck into his arms for a tight embrace. “That’s amazing news, Buck. W-why didn’t you tell me?”
“I was scared,” Buck says quietly into Eddie’s ear.
Eddie holds him tighter. “You don’t have to be anymore. We can figure everything out together, okay?"
Buck nods. “Yeah, okay.”
Eddie then ends the embrace, placing his hands on Buck’s shoulders, looking intensely into his eyes.
“Baby, who said we weren’t together anymore? I was just giving you space, as much as it killed me; I knew you needed it. I’ve missed you so much. Chris has missed you so much. We need you home, sweetheart.”
Buck smiles, tears streaming down his cheeks, Eddie immediately wiping them away with his thumbs.
“Will you come home?” Eddie asks.
Buck nods, smiling. “Yes, I’d love to.”
Eddie then leans in, keeping some distance between them to let Buck decide what he wants to do.
The blonde grabs the collar of Eddie’s shirt and then connects their mouths for messy, desperate kisses.
God, it’s been so long.
Buck ends up on his back with Eddie over him, the kiss deepening.
“I’ve missed this,” Eddie breathes against his mouth with a smile.
Buck giggles. “Yeah, me too. It’s also how I ended up pregnant.”
Eddie chuckles. “Yeah, but I wouldn’t change it for the world. I can’t wait to meet them. Chris is going to love having a baby sibling.”
Buck grins, tears in his eyes. “I miss him so much.”
“I know, baby. He’s missed you too. He’s going to be so happy to see you again.”
“Me too.”
“Let’s go home, yeah? So you can rest and see him once he’s home from school.”
Buck nods, sniffling. “I’d like that.”
Eddie leans down and kisses his birthmark.
“Let’s go home, mi vida.”
Eddie walks with him to Bobby’s office, telling their captain that Buck had a bad spell of nausea and needs to go home.
“Take a few days off, you two, and rest and catch up, okay? Call me with any updates.”
Eddie nods. “Will do, Cap.”
Buck grins at his father. “You got it, Pops.”
Bobby smiles at that. “Good to have you back, kid.”
“It’s good to be back.”
Eddie kisses his cheek, grabs their duffel bags from the locker room, the two waving goodbye to their coworkers—family, then they climb into Eddie’s truck and drive home to South Bedford Street.
Buck and Eddie then fall into Eddie’s bed and fall right to sleep, Eddie holding Buck tight in his arms.
Buck has missed times like this.
He’s never going to lose it again; he will make sure of that, especially now because of the baby.
Buck can’t wait to see Christopher. He has missed his boy so much.
Buck wakes still in Eddie’s arms, hearing quiet laughter out in the living room.
A smile quickly spreads across Buck’s face.
Eddie then leans down to kiss his head. “Want to head out there with me?”
Buck nods. “Yes, please.”
Eddie climbs out of the bed, then walks around to Buck’s side to help him out of the bed, Buck’s shirt riding up a little bit, revealing a sliver of his stomach.
Buck is three and a half months along now, and his belly isn’t really showing.
He looks more so bloated than pregnant.
Suddenly, Eddie falls to his knees, pushing up Buck’s shirt, pressing kiss after kiss to Buck’s stomach.
“Hello, little one, this is one of your Daddies. I just want you to know that I love you so very much and that I can’t wait to meet you in a few months.”
Buck’s eyes turn glossy as he stares down at his boyfriend with a smile.
Buck has really missed calling Eddie his boyfriend.
Eddie places one last kiss on Buck’s stomach, then rises to his feet, taking Buck's hands in his, staring adoringly into Buck's eyes, grinning softly.
“Move in with us, Buck.”
Buck chuckles. “Absolutely. I’ve never wanted anything more than to be close to my boys every day.”
Eddie pulls him in for a sweet, gentle kiss for that.
“Let’s go see our son, yeah?”
Buck nods. “Yeah. Let’s.”
The two walk hand in hand out of Eddie’s bedroom and into the dining room, where Carla and Chris are, probably working on his homework.
“Mijo?” Eddie calls to catch Chris’s attention.
“You’re home early!” Chris shouts excitedly.
“Well, it’s because someone very special finally came back to us.”
Chris loudly gasps as Buck and Eddie turn the corner.
“Bucky!” The boy screams in pure delight, hopping out of the chair and hobbling over to Buck as fast as he can, with his arms out for the man.
Buck smiles so hard his face hurts, taking the eight-year-old boy into his arms, holding him tight.
“You’re here!”
Buck nods in the crook of the boy’s neck. “Yeah, I am, and I’m never leaving again. I love you so much, Christopher.”
“I love you too, Papa.”
And that’s it for Buck; he cries happy tears as he holds his boy tight.
Eddie eventually falls to his knees and wraps his arms around the both of them, holding them tight, kissing their cheeks.
“Welcome home, Buck,” Carla says, smiling down at the three of them.
Buck looks up at her. “Thanks, Carla. It feels good to be back.”
She winks at him, giving them some space.
A little while later, the four of them are sitting in the living room, Buck breaking the news to them.
“So, I have a very happy announcement to make,” Buck says, glancing at Eddie, who smiles and nods, silently telling him to continue.
“I am currently three and a half months pregnant.”
Carla gasps loudly as Chris beams, cheering loudly.
“That’s amazing news, honey!”
“I’m getting a baby sibling?” Chris asks excitedly.
“Oh, absolutely, buddy,” Buck says, pulling Chris into a tight but short hug, now getting up from the couch to hug Carla.
“I’m moving in as well,” Buck tells them when the embrace with Carla ends.
Chris cheers. “Papa is staying forever!”
The three adults laugh, Eddie rising from the couch to pick up their son into his arms so they can all share a group hug.
Buck loves his family so much, he’s never going to let them go.
Six months later, Evan Diaz gives birth to a beautiful little girl who is the spitting image of Eddie with Buck’s birthmark above her left eye.
Isabel Madeline Diaz fits right into their family, as well as her twin baby siblings that the two men welcome into their family a few years later.
