“Intern, are there any patients left waiting to be checked in?-”
Agent’s ears twitched as he turned around, the coffee pot in hand. He’d turned to face the front desk casually and stopped short when he spotted the Intern, kneeling down on the other side of the check in desk, looking in. Intern’s head rested on the very ledge, his ears stretched tall above him. Some of his head fluff was overhanging the window.
Cute.
Agent blinked, his head still as he erased the thought from his head and pretended it never came about. Agent’s head tilted a fraction, equal parts confusion and curiosity. He stepped forwards a couple times in small shuffles.
“Pet”
Intern’s voice came in a quiet staccato, with an exhausted lilt to his words. His chin raised from the windowsill as Intern spoke. Agent wholeheartedly waited for Intern to explain, give some context for at least the one word he’d already said, but no. Thirty seconds passed; hospital ambiance filling the stretch of blank and tired staring.
“Pet pet”
Intern wiggled his ears, tilting his head to the side just as Agent had moments ago. It took him a moment to realize that Intern was asking. Soon the thought came to Agent, Intern was asking for head pets. Leaving Agent with one answer and many more questions. Agent looked down at the coffee pot in his hands, slowly pouring it into his mug as he contemplated.
The coffee reached the rim of the mug, steam wafted upwards and heated Agent’s nose as he re-placed the coffee pot under the machine. He wrapped his paws around the hot mug as Agent decidedly walked towards the counter, taking a small sip of coffee he turned around placing the mug on the counter he hopped upwards to sit against the wall atop the desk.
Eyeing the screen above, the green 0 (zero), Agent casted a long glance over the waiting room to see it empty for the first time in hours. His shoulders relaxed a bit at the solitude, and came to the conclusion that it was likely Intern being sleep deprived, given the time, plus Intern being an already odd person it didn’t really seem out of the ordinary when Agent really thought on it. Agent leaned on one arm, bringing the other over to Intern’s head, giving him a few gentle pats on the fuzz he’d been curious about.
“Your fur is softer than it looks”
Agent mumbled to himself, the thought escaping aloud whether he realized it or not. Footsteps sounded in the nearby hallway, and Agent’s gaze drifted upwards towards the window, watching as the lavender haired Secretary trudged tiredly, steps muffled by the carpet.
Agent almost pulled his hand away from Intern when she reached the door, but Secratary had noticed already. She simply looked the both of them up and down, sighed, and walked away. Mumbling about how the Intern was dragging the others into his antics.
Agent looked down to see Intern’s head lulled to the side, resting against the inside corner of the check-in window. Agent’s hand slowed but didn’t leave his counterpart's head. He could stay like this, just for a little while. He deserved that much, didn’t he?
