Work Text:
Pearl thought that they’d had an unspoken agreement. Rose has her little trysts but at the end of the day, decade, or century- she’d be back in Pearl’s arms. Back to being hers and only hers after her latest impermanent lover met their predictable human demise. But here Rose is, sitting on the beach with the baby in her belly just starting to show. A baby that will spell the end of Rose altogether. A guarantee that Pearl will be sharing up until the very end.
Despite that, Rose expects Pearl to be happy about the pregnancy. The only thing keeping Pearl from losing it completely is the possibility that when the human part of the baby dies the gem will revert back into Rose. It’ll be many agonizing decades before she can confirm that theory.
“Isn’t it exciting,” Rose says with a warm smile. Pearl pries her gaze off of Rose’s stomach to look directly at her face. She doesn’t seem worried about this at all. She takes one of Pearl’s hands in her own and leads it to her gem. “I hope you enjoy your time with them.”
Enjoy her time with a human infant that killed her lover? Of course she won’t. Pearl nods anyway. “It’ll… Be like having a tiny, fragile you around.”
Rose laughs and Pearl’s chest aches. “Oh, I hope not. I’m sure it’ll be a much nicer human than I ever was a gem.”
“You were never a bad gem, Rose. You were just…” Pearl doesn’t continue the sentence. She promised never to speak of Pink again and she won’t. This will, technically, be the second time she’s lost her love.
“This baby… It’ll have you and Greg and Garnet and Amethyst to teach it everything it needs to know. About Earth, about gems…. It’ll be just perfect.” Rose looks up at the sky. “You’ll love it for me, won’t you, Pearl?”
How could she ever? Still, Pearl nods.
“Do you promise?”
“I do.”
