The Return of Blue

Summary:

Chloe didn’t move, but the muscle in her jaw twitched. The dial felt heavy in her hand, a cold, metallic anchor tethering her to a choice she couldn’t undo once made.

“The day you held your sword against my throat... that was the moment I knew,” Red whispered, her voice barely audible over the roaring in her ears. She searched Chloe’s eyes, her gaze tracing every line of tension in her face. “Everyone else looked at me and only saw the next Queen of Hearts. They saw a threat, a villain, a monster in training. But you didn’t run from me. You looked past the crown, past the anger, and you just saw me. That’s why I love you, Chloe Charming. You spend so much time looking for the good in the rest of the world, but you never see it in yourself. But we can figure it out. We can figure it out together.”

Chloe’s eyes finally ripped away from Red, snapping to meet Max’s wide eyes. For a fraction of a second, the manic certainty in her expression wavered, replaced by the crushing weight of everything they had lost to get here. Her thumb remained on the dial, but it wasn't pressing down anymore. It was shaking.

The real scene we all wanted to happen

Work Text:

The weight of the pocket watch pressed heavily into her hand. Nothing felt more powerful than that exact moment. For once, she would be her own person. She could finally be free.

Chloe glared over at Max, then slowly shifted her eyes to Red. The poor princess looked so completely shattered, her expressions twisting into a mix of hurt and utter confusion. It was pathetic, really. And watching it happen? Witnessing the exact second her heart broke into pieces only caused Chloe's lips to pull into a dark grin.

It was a defense mechanism, a mask to hide the terrifying truth. Seeing Red look at her like she was a monster tore Chloe apart inside. She had loved her in the quiet corners of their shared dorm room; she had loved her in the dangerous, adrenaline-fueled moments when they had rewritten history itself.

But Red had always kept a wall up, always remained a step out of reach, treating herself like a curse that everyone was bound to abandon. Becoming a villain, stepping into the dark, felt like the only way to finally force the VK to truly see her. To make Red realize that Chloe wasn't just a fragile little doll to be protected or kept at a distance.

“Chloe.” Red’s face softened as she spoke. “Think about what you’re doing.” Red gently moved forward, her boots scraping softly against the stone floor as she took a tentative step toward her roommate.

Every instinct in Red’s body, honed by years of surviving the Queen of Hearts, told her to draw her weapon or run. Instead, she completely exposed herself. “This isn’t you, Bluey.”

Chloe scoffed sharply, her eyes narrowing as they locked onto Red's ridiculously watery brown ones. She absolutely hated how easily Red could turn her into the villain. Yet, looking at it now, she had to admit it was secretly satisfying to see her roommate broken down like this.

"No shit, Red. Weren't you listening? Of course this isn't me, that’s the fun part,"Chloe laughed, throwing her head back.

The sound echoed hollowly against the walls before she lowered her gaze, drinking in the profound hurt stretching across the princess's face. "For once, I'm not doing what's expected of me. I'm not playing the hero."

Max’s voice sliced through the tension between them. “Good. Now click the dial, Chloe. All of our pain will be gone and our lives will be back.” He paused, a smirk slowly spreading across his face. “It’s the perfect revenge.”

Chloe’s vision cut sharply to the Hatter boy. Did he seriously think she was that naive? Before she could snap back, a sudden, intrusive whisper echoed violently through her mind.

Don’t do it! Don’t listen to that boy! Do it for yourself, not for him. He might have seen the potential in your darkness, but you are the one who embraced it. You are the one holding the power.

“You think I’m doing this for you, Max? You think I care? No. No, I have seen your story. I say let's forget the past and focus on the future.” Chloe lifted the heavy pocket watch by its chain, letting it fall directly into Max's field of view. It began to swing left, right, left, right. “A future where I am on top. A future where I can be free, and I won't need either of you in it.”

Max’s smirk instantly vanished. The smug, victorious look in his eyes was gone. He froze, his gaze fixed on the swinging watch, his mind scrambling to process the fact that he was no longer in control.

"Chloe, wait–" Max stammered, his voice losing its sharp edge as he instinctively stepped back. "That wasn't the plan. We had a deal! I gave you that power!”

“And I took it.” Chloe snapped her attention back to the Hatter boy. It was almost hilarious how stupid he was, standing there trusting her, entirely unaware that he had just handed her his own destruction. Her thumb hovered over the dial, practically aching to press it down and end it all.

Red noticed. She had always paid closer attention to Chloe's smallest habits than she cared to admit. Taking another trembling step forward, Red raised her hands slightly, desperately trying to reach her friend and bring her back to her senses.

“Chloe, you were right about everything. Traveling to the past to save your mom... it changed my life, too.” Red reached Chloe’s arm, her fingers brushing the fabric of her sleeve with a feather-light touch, terrified that any sudden movement would cause Chloe’s thumb to drop. “You showed me I wasn’t a lost cause. Back when I thought I was destined to be nothing but a tyrant, when I thought everyone in Auradon would always hate me... you believed me. You cared about me.”

Chloe’s eyes finally ripped away from the pocket watch, snapping to meet Red's gaze. For a fraction of a second, the manic, dark certainty in her expression wavered, completely shattered by the crushing weight of Red's words. The sheer honesty of the confession struck her like a physical blow. Her thumb remained positioned over the dial, but it wasn't pressing down anymore. It was shaking uncontrollably.

Max leaned forward, aggressively interrupting the fragile scene. “Oh, don't let her fool you, Chloe,” he scoffed, his voice sharp and manipulative. “Desperate people will say anything to survive. If she actually loved you, you wouldn’t be in this position in the first place. If she truly saw the good in you, she would have saved you from this path, not watched you drown in it.”

Ignoring Max entirely, Red shifted her weight, her hand moving smoothly from Chloe’s sleeve to rest against her cheek. The warmth of her palm was an anchor, forcing Chloe to look away from the shadows and back into the light. Red offered her a small, reassuring smile, her thumb brushing Chloe's cheekbone.

“Bluey, tune him out,” Red murmured, her voice steady and grounded. “Don’t listen to him. Listen to yourself. What is it that you want? Not your family, not Max, not Auradon. What do you want?”

Chloe froze, trapped in the eye of the storm between Max’s poison and Red’s warmth. The touch on her cheek felt like electricity, burning away the cold numbness that had taken over her body. Her eyes, wide and searching, locked onto Red’s. For a long moment, the only sound in the room was the ragged rhythm of Chloe’s breathing.

Her gaze flicked down to Red’s lips, then back up to her eyes, processing the reality of the words. She loves me back. It wasn't a trick. It wasn't a survival tactic. It was the exact thing she had been starving for, hidden behind a mask of villainy because she thought she could never have it as a perfect princess.

Slowly, the tension in Chloe’s shoulders began to bleed away. The hand holding the dial lowered just an inch, her knuckles losing their stark white strain.

“Red... I, uh-I...” Chloe whispered, completely lost for words for the first time in her life.

Red didn't wait for her to solve the puzzle in her head. Watching the confusion, the profound longing, and the terrifying vulnerability war across Chloe's face, Red closed the final fraction of distance between them. She didn't hesitate. She leaned forward and crashed their lips together in a soft, desperately breathless kiss.

It wasn't a perfect, fairytale kiss. It was hesitant at first, a trembling, quiet question from a girl who had spent her whole life believing she was a weapon, answering a girl who had spent her life trying to be a shield. It carried the weight of months of unspoken tension, of quiet glances across a crowded dorm room, and of a love that had survived time travel, queens, and villains alike. It poured out every single ounce of devotion Red had harbored in secret.

As their lips fully met, a brilliant, fracturing light erupted from the device. The magical wristwatch that bound Chloe’s dark transformation suddenly loosened, its gears grinding to a halt as the dark magic dissolved under the sheer force of their connection. The watch slipped silently from Chloe's wrist, clattering uselessly against the cold stone floor.

The world seemed to tilt drastically as Chloe’s eyelids fluttered and shut, the sudden rush of her true self returning leaving her entirely drained. Her knees gave out beneath her, the exhaustion of fighting her own heart finally catching up to her.

But she didn’t hit the ground.

Red caught her instantly, wrapping her arms securely around Chloe’s waist and pulling her weight against her chest.

Max stared down at the clattering wristwatch on the floor, his mask of control completely shattering as the dark magic vanished into thin air. “No... no, look at her! She’s slipping away because of you!” he snarled, taking a frantic, angry step forward, his fists clenched. "We were supposed to change things!"

Red ignored him completely, her focus entirely narrowed down to the girl cradled in her arms. Max didn't matter. The past didn't matter. Only Chloe did.

“Chloe? Chloe, look at me, please,” Red pleaded, her voice cracking with a sudden, sharp panic as she felt Chloe's eyes remain closed. She lowered them both gently to the floor, sitting on the stones and wrapping her arms tightly around Chloe’s torso to support her dead weight.

Red leaned down until their foreheads touched, holding the unconscious girl as close as physically possible, letting out the ragged breath she felt like she’d been holding for a lifetime. “Princess? Bluey? Please. Wake up. I'm right here. I love you.”

A faint, shuddering breath escaped Chloe’s lips, her chest rising against Red's. Slowly, painfully, her eyelashes fluttered against Red’s cheek before her eyes finally cracked open. The deep, familiar, brilliant blue returned, clear and completely free of Max’s dark, manipulative influence. She blinked up at Red, dazed and disoriented by the sudden shift in reality.

But the moment she registered the fresh tear stains on Red's face and the incredibly tight, protective grip around her waist, a soft, genuine smile touched her lips.

“You're loud, Red,” Chloe whispered, her voice barely a breath, though she leaned her head weakly back against Red’s shoulder, letting herself be entirely held. “I can hear your heart racing from here.”

Red let out a choked laugh, half-sob and half-relief, burying her face into Chloe’s messy blue curls for a brief, emotional second just to breathe her in. Then, she pulled back just enough to look at her, her eyes scanning every inch of Chloe's face to ensure she was truly back. “You terrified me, Bluey. Don't ever do that to me again.”

“I told you...” Chloe murmured, her hand weakly lifting from the floor to rest directly over Red’s heart, feeling the rapid, steady beat beneath her palm. It wasn't a magical fix, and the memory of the dark path still lingered in the corners of her mind, but the heat of Red's skin was real. It was a silent promise they were making to each other in the dark. “We'll figure it out. Figure it out together.”

Red didn't rush into another kiss. Instead, she leaned in close, letting the tips of their noses brush as she let out a long, shaky breath, her dark eyes brimming with a soft, protective affection. They had time now
