i forgive you

Summary:

first, he is excited.

or: a poem on forgiveness and the final scene of season 2.

Notes:

maybe forgiveness was the friends we made along the way

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

first, he is excited.
he has a promise (maybe one that will be broken).
he has a hope (maybe one that will be shattered).
he has a feeling (maybe one you can someday grasp).

he looks at you softly.
he has looked at you this way thousands of times,
over thousands of years.

(the unfortunate bit is what's coming.
he has said it before.
he has said it again.
and again.
and today, just after your human friends left,
and you were forced into Understanding,
he will say it again.)

he has, as he has in the past, news that he must share before he pops.
and hold that thought!,
because this news is Good.

then, he tells you about the opening.
the opening, which comes after they ran off.
(this is not surprising.)

but then, he tells you about restoration.
he tells you, in no uncertain terms, that you cannot be with him as you are.
he tells you, that toxic place can be like the Old Times.
he tells you, you’re the bad guys.
and then, he said yes.

you tell him about your new Understanding.
you don’t say it right.
you tell him he can’t leave.
nothing lasts forever.
you wish him luck.

and then he says it.
you kiss him, and he says it.
you try to make him Understand, and he says it.
you think he might say something else, but he says it.

it is not a question of deserving it.
it is not a question of if he should have.
it is not a question of if he will come back.
(it is also not a question of if you will.)
it’s just as it is,
as it always has been,
with foreign, unwanted forgiveness.
and it is just as it always will be.

Notes:

thanks for reading. i wrote this after finishing season 2, way back in october 2023. i debated off and on if i would post it since then. it has been almost three years. so fuck it. have my shitty fandom poetry, ao3! have it all!

in oct 2023, i had just finished harrow the ninth (go read tlt) and second person became a serious obsession in my writing. crowley's forgiveness (or lack thereof) and history with it has always really gotten to me; aziraphale forgives him again and again and how does that affect someone(thing) who was cast out, with no option for redemption? what does it mean to be redeemed by the person(thing) that matters to you most? this poem definitely does not adequately explore that, or even go into my own thoughts on the topic, but it is what inspired it. and that sure is something!
