Chapter Text

The transition from the frantic chaos of the hospital to the suffocating grand mansion of the Yoon estate left Seungcheol completely overwhelmed.

He wasn't a hero he was just a doctor who had panicked, begged for his life, and somehow ended up in the custody of the country's most dangerous man.

Three days after his arrival, Seungcheol spent most of his time hiding in the sprawling guest room he had been assigned.

Every time the heavy doors clicked or a footstep echoed in the hallway outside his chest tightened and his breath caught, the silk pajamas they had given him felt too smooth, the bed too large and the silence of the mansion way too loud.

He was sitting on the edge of the mattress, his knees pulled up to his chest and his fingers nervously fraying the edge of his soft sweater, when the door opened without a knock.

Seungcheol flinched violently his dark eyes widening in pure instinctual fear as Yoon Jeonghan stepped into the room.

Jeonghan looked entirely out of place in the softly lit bedroom he was wearing a charcoal grey tailored vest over a crisp white shirt, his sharp handsome features completely impassive. He held a small silver tray with a bowl of warm broth and some tea.

"My staff tells me you haven't left this room in 48 hours" Jeonghan said, his voice quiet and smooth.

He walked over and placed the tray on the nightstand, "And you barely touched the dinner sent up last night"

Seungcheol swallowed hard, pulling his knees a little tighter to his chest he looked up at Jeonghan through his eyelashes, his voice trembling slightly "I... I wasn't very hungry Mr. Yoon"

Jeonghan looked down at him, his feline eyes narrowing slightly as he analyzed the sheer vulnerability radiating off the younger man the fierce, desperate doctor who had begged for help in the rain was gone, replaced by a frightened, fragile civilian trembling under his roof.

"Are you afraid of the food, Doctor Choi? Or are you afraid of me?" Jeonghan asked, taking a slow step closer to the bed.

Seungcheol shrunk back just a fraction, his heart hammering against his ribs. He hated how weak he felt, but the sheer presence of the mafia leader was terrifying.

"Both," Seungcheol whispered honestly, his bottom lip quivering slightly. He looked down at his own tightly clasped hands. "Everything here... it’s too much i don't belong in a place like this i’m just a doctor, i just want to help people, and now... now I’m trapped" A single, stressed tear slipped down his cheek, and he hastily wiped it away with the sleeve of his sweater, looking mortified.

Jeonghan stared at him for a man who dealt in violence, extortion and control, Seungcheol’s soft raw display of fear was almost jarring. There was no defiance here no bargaining just a gentle soul completely out of its depth.

Slowly, Jeonghan sat down on the very edge of the mattress. The bed dipped slightly under his weight, making Seungcheol tense up.

"Look at me Seungcheol" Jeonghan commanded softly.

It wasn't a harsh shout, but the absolute authority in Jeonghans tone made Seungcheol instantly raise his eyes.

Jeonghan reached out, his long pale fingers surprisingly gentle as he hooked them under Seungcheols chin. His touch was cool against Seungcheols flushed, warm skin. He didn't squeeze he just held him steady, forcing the trembling doctor to look into his unreadable eyes.

"If I wanted you dead, you would have died in that alley," Jeonghan said, his voice dropping to a low, soothing cadence that carried a dangerous undercurrent "If I wanted to hurt you, I wouldn't have brought you to my home you are safe here my walls are impenetrable, and my men answer only to me do you understand?"

Seungcheol nodded weakly a small, shaky breath escaping him "Yes..."

"Good" Jeonghans thumb lightly brushed across Seungcheols cheekbone, wiping away the trace of another tear before he let his hand drop. He stood up, smoothing his vest. "Eat the broth, Tomorrow i will have Jisoo show you the medical bay it’s quiet down there, you can organize it however you like it might help you feel more... at home"

Jeonghan walked toward the door, pausing just before he opened it. He looked back at the soft, trembling figure on the bed.

"Rest well, Seungcheol you don't need to fear the dark anymore i own the shadows in this city"

The heavy door clicked shut, leaving Seungcheol alone once more with the quiet hum of the mansion.

He stared at the closed door for a long time, his hand slowly rising to touch his jaw, right where Jeonghans cool fingers had just rested his skin still tingled from the contact. The mafia leader’s word —I own the shadows in this city— should have terrified him even more, but instead a strange exhausting wave of relief washed over him.

Turning his head, he looked at the silver tray on the nightstand. The warm steam rising from the broth carried the gentle scent of ginger and ginseng his stomach gave a quiet, hollow rumble.

With trembling hands, Seungcheol let his legs untuck from his chest and crept to the edge of the bed. He picked up the spoon, his fingers shaking so much that a few drops spilled back into the bowl before he could manage a sip. It was rich, warm, and entirely soothing. As he ate, he let out a quiet shaky sob finally allowing the built up tension of the last few days to drain out of him. He was still terrified, but he wasn't running anymore.

The next morning, the bright sunlight streaming through the sheer curtains woke Seungcheol up earlier than usual.

True to Jeonghan’s word, a soft knock sounded at the door precisely at nine in morning. When Seungcheol opened it, pulling his oversized beige sweater tight around his frame, he found Jisoo standing there. Unlike the rest of the sharply dressed, imposing guards, Jisoo wore a gentle reassuring smile.

"Good morning, Doctor Cheol" Jisoo said warmly "Master Jeonghan asked me to show you the medical facilities downstairs. Only if you're feeling up to it, of course"

Seungcheol swallowed, nervously tugging at his sleeves. "I... yes. Please i think I’d like to see it"

The journey down to the basement was silent, but not suffocating. Jisoo kept a respectful distance, sensing how easily startled the young doctor was. When the heavy elevator doors slid open into the private medical bay, Seungcheols eyes widened, and he took a soft, hesitant step forward.

It was an absolute sanctuary. The walls were a clean, sterile white, and the equipment was state of the art far better than the underfunded trauma unit Seungcheol had been working at in the city. There were rows of pristine glass cabinets, immaculate surgical tables, and advanced monitoring systems.

"Master Jeonghan had this built a few years ago," Jisoo explained softly, folding his hands behind his back. "But we haven't had a proper physician to manage it other then that the supplies arrive weekly, but it’s a bit of a mess in terms of organization Jeonghan thought... well he thought you might like to take charge of it"

Seungcheol walked over to one of the large glass cabinets, his fingers lightly tracing the polished handles. For the first time since he arrived, the familiar sight of bandages, syringes, and medical vials brought a wave of comfort over him. This was a language he spoke. This was a world he understood.

"It’s... it's beautiful," Seungcheol whispered, his voice cracking slightly. He turned to Jisoo, a small, tentative smile finally breaking through his fearful expression. "Can I... can I start organizing it today?"

"You can do whatever you like with this space, Doctor Choi," a smooth, low voice echoed from the elevator entry.

Seungcheol gasped, flinched, and immediately spun around, his back hitting the glass cabinet.

Jeonghan stood there, leaning casually against the elevator frame. He had his hands in his trouser pockets, looking incredibly sharp in a tailored black shirt. His cold, dark eyes swept over the medical bay before settling on Seungcheols startled, trembling form.

Jisoo bowed slightly and quietly stepped back into the elevator, leaving the two of them alone.

Jeonghan walked forward, his footsteps quiet against the floor. Every step he took closer made Seungcheols heart beat faster, his hands gripping the edge of the counter behind him for support.

"You look less like a ghost today," Jeonghan observed, stopping a few feet away. His tone was detached, but his eyes were fixated on the tiny hint of color that had returned to Seungcheols cheeks. "Did you sleep?"

"A... a little," Seungcheol murmured, lowering his gaze. He couldn't handle the sheer intensity of Jeonghans stare for too long it felt like the mafia leader was peering straight into his soul "Thank you for the broth last night. And for... for letting me come down here"

Jeonghan hummed, walking past Seungcheol to run a finger over a row of unorganized surgical trays. "As I told you, Seungcheol, I don't do charity. I expect this place to be fully operational and perfectly sorted. When my men get hurt, I expect them to be patched up flawlessly. Can your small, frightened hands handle that?"

The words were cold, a stark reminder of the violent reality he was now tied to, but the underlying challenge sparked a tiny, hidden ember of pride inside Seungcheol.

"My hands don't shake when I'm holding a scalpel," Seungcheol said softly, his voice quiet but filled with a sudden, genuine earnestness. He looked up, meeting Jeonghan's fierce gaze with a watery but determined look. "I might be afraid of you, Mr. Yoon... but I am never afraid of medicine i will take care of your men i promise"

Jeonghan stared at him, his expression completely unreadable. The stark contrast of Seungcheol so soft, so easily frightened, yet entirely unyielding when it came to his profession was fascinating.

Slowly, Jeonghan closed the distance between them. Seungcheol held his breath, his back pressed flat against the glass cabinet as Jeonghan stepped into his space, Jeonghan raised a hand, his cold fingers gently tucking a stray lock of dark hair behind Seungcheols ear.

"We will see my sweet Doctor," Jeonghan whispered, his voice dropping to a dangerously intimate murmur that made Seungcheols knees feel weak "Don't disappoint me"
