Work Text:
Out of all the trials and tribulations that Christine had gone through in her education, finals of the first semester of her senior year of high school were the worst. She knew they weren’t the only thing colleges looked at when considering students, but it was the last major effort that they would see. Studying with Jeremy was making everything marginally better. But, Christine knew, he couldn’t cure the fact that her focus was already starting to fade, and he especially couldn’t cure her executive dysfunction or the fact that the world was starting to blur.
Wait, what?
“... and the precedent of that law would make—Christine?” Christine looked up from her papers at her boyfriend, and suddenly felt the tears start to roll down her cheeks. Oh, God, no…. “Christine, what’s wrong?”
“I just”—Christine sniffled—“I hate our gov class so much.”
“Me too, but seriously, are you okay? You’re crying.”
“It’s… I don’t know,” Christine started, “I can never focus, and I have so much trouble getting things done. Do you know what the popular people in junior high used to say about me? They don’t go to our school, but I still remember it. I don’t think I’m ever going to forget it. And the fact that I can’t focus now means I’m never going to do well in college. Jeremy, I—”
“Hey,” Jeremy interrupted. “Look at me.” Christine did, and blushed marginally when she felt Jeremy take her face in his hands. “You’re going to do amazing in college. In less than two weeks, we won’t even have to remember gov. We’ll have to remember econ, but then it’s only a few months until graduation, when we won’t have to remember all the awful things they’re trying to make us remember now.” Christine took a shaky breath as Jeremy’s words started to sink in, and then another one as she finished processing them. She was a lot calmer now, and it was all thanks to her boyfriend.
“I love you,” Christine sighed, leaning in to kiss Jeremy. When she pulled away, Jeremy was blushing too.
“I love you too. Want to take a little break? Maybe five minutes?”
“Alright.” Christine set aside her work, preparing to wind down, if only for a little bit.
