It was dark and I was over

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

She should go to bed. Dana should open her bedroom door and hope she gets through the night without a nightmare. She could phone Benji, being apart has been hard on both of them. It's for the best, until the worst of the pandemic is over.

Dana should not be standing in the doorway of Robby’s bedroom. She hasn't stepped foot in here the whole time she's been staying here. This was his space, her bedroom was hers. Adamson's had been his.

But now Adamson is dead and at some point one of them will have to go in there, clear away his things and send them to his sister. Selfishly she hoped Robby would be the one to do it.

“Are you going to stand there all night?” Robby asked, looking up at the ceiling. He hasn't cried. She was sure if he cried, let it out instead of bottling it up he'd feel better. If the grief had somewhere to go other than festering away inside. Dana, since their shift had ended, had cried until there were no more tears left to give. “Do you wanna lay with me a little while? I promise to be on my best behalf.”

“Yes.” Dana had tried to keep her voice nonchalant, but it wobbled and it was tinged with a sadness she couldn't make go away. She wished that had Robby's ability to numb herself here and now, oh he'd pay it later down the line. He always did. But right now she envied him. “Just remember Robinavitch, I can break bones just as well as I can reset them.”

Robby muttered something under his breath that she didn't catch as she climbed in beside him. She's too emotionally exhausted to demand he repeat it. When he puts his hands around her waist she's too tired to wrestle with Benji wouldn't approve. Her husband would probably find it easier if she had random sex with someone than the emotional intimacy she had with Robby. They'd argue for weeks if she mentioned he held her while they were lying in bed together.

“Are you okay?” Dana asked, after a few minutes of trying and failing to fall asleep. Even though that's all she wanted to do.

“Let's talk about something else D. Anything else rather than how I am or how I'm feeling,” Robby suggested, his nose nuzzling into her hair. “Like I am getting a new motorbike.”

“I heard, and I think you're an idiot. You came off the last one and broke your ankle. Whined the entire recovery time.”

Notes:

My hc Robby brought that motorbike to go on suicide sabbatical post Adamson death but something kept pulling him back by being needed at the hospital. Didn't need to share that angst thought but let's suffer together.
