Work Text:
Here we connect with Mother Earth.
Her warmth,
Her comfort,
Her light.
Her love is dancing among us.
In the winds,
In the water,
In the soil.
She brings us gifts.
In her flora,
In her fauna,
And in her life.
Her life lets us breathe
And her life lets us grow.
Our nerves are the roots
To the soil of our soul,
And our skin is the glass
To our terrarium of love.
Parasites feed, moss thrives,
And our brains are made
Entirely of snails.
We love, we think,
We feel, we hurt.
Our mother, dear mother,
Made us so fragile,
So the leaves of our heart
Could welcome the sun.
The mollusks in our minds
Eat the marrow of our bones
And we become an ecosystem
Of our very own.
An ecosystem we share,
An ecosystem we love,
An ecosystem hurt,
Eaten away by rust.
We cry, we scream,
We fear, we remember.
Our mother, dear mother,
Gifted us her light,
So the smog from our mouths
Could pollute our souls.
Our chests may open,
But our flowers will wilt
Our lips can kiss,
Yet it tastes like smoke
The flavor of hatred,
A flavor so addicting
To those caught in its haze,
The winds now
Only wail in pain.
Hammers crack our skin,
Mercury poisons the waters,
And salt dries our snails.
We simply forget what it feels like
To fertilize the soils
That feeds our souls.
We created our droughts,
We lit our fires.
The black fog blinds us,
Lost in a maze
Of our own deceit.
Our mother, dear mother,
Created this world.
So why do we destroy
The Earth that loves us?
Why do we breed
The hatred that kills us?
We teach our young
Our glass breaks easily.
“Welcome to the real world,”
They tell us.
But is the real world
Truly so cruel?
Did our mother, dear mother,
Create us just to fight?
If not made to love,
Then what is our one true purpose
On this Earth?
Were we just given dreams
Only to snuff them out?
Were we not made
To be one with Mother Earth?
Her children
Are fighting.
Her children
Are dying.
This isn't what she wanted.
This isn't her creation.
She couldn't look at it
And bear any heart for those
Who drown out the light
of their own siblings.
Then it awoke her.
One of her creations,
Walking on her back.
The forest on her shoulders
Spanning for miles.
The pines of great trees,
Holding a fond memory.
They watched as the dappled sun
Sparkled in the panes
Of their glass skin.
The vines in their lungs,
Breathing the fresh air.
Isopods crawling
Amongst their sturdy bones.
The snails in their head,
Thinking so many thoughts.
The leaves of their heart,
Opening to hug the sun
And allowing their love
To bloom once more.
This is what life is for.
A rose blossomed
Between their ribs.
The reason she creates.
They stood at the edge
Of a river's mouth,
Welcoming life
Into its throat.
The birds sang softly,
Deer gathered peacefully,
And frogs croaked soft songs
The day finally coming
To a close.
They laid there
Quietly on the ground,
Opening their chest.
All the bugs crawled out,
And the plants grew larger.
The flower of their heart
Now bigger than ever.
Their body,
Now free of the shackles
Of humans judgement.
As the day closed its eyes,
And the trees hugged them close.
The winds whispered
Through the blanket of night,
“I love you.”
Cool breath breezing.
A line of ants smile,
Marching back to home.
“I love you too,”
They said back,
The grass so gently
Brushing their palms,
Their fingers gently running
Through her hair.
This was freedom.
This was love.
This is what everything
Ever created
Has been put onto Earth for.
To simply be.
To simply exist.
To simply grow.
To simply change.
To be truly what your soul craves.
To be what you make yourself.
To be you.
To love you.
To let the Universe
Love you.
And to love being
The children
Of Mother Earth.
