Chapter 1: Saturn's rings

Chapter Text

Cold wind Howls through the air, spraying rain and storm like bullets against the glass.

Saturn sits on his windowsill watching the storm outside. Poetic things, storms. So dangerous, yet so beautiful. He can't help but admire them. They remind him of his younger years, deeds best swept under the rug.

The storm continues to rage outside, the chill starting to seep through the insulated glass. Saturn sighs and gets up to pour himself a drink. Scotch. Not his favourite but it's all Jupiter keeps stocked.

He watches absentmindedly as the caramel liquid pool in the glass, stopping right before it touched the rim.

He stared outside once again, taking a sip and letting the liquid burn his throat in that all familiar yet pleasant sensation. The storm showed no sign of letting up and for a brief moment Saturn worried that the trees outside wouldn't be able to hold up.

A loud slam caused him to jump slightly, ripping him from his musings.

Inside of his living room was a sopping wet Titan, shaken to the core.

"Goodness, you're all wet!"

He stood up to greet the other.

"She's dead...I-"

"One step at a time, sit."

Saturn gently touched Titans arm, cringing slightly at the feeling of wet fabric, and lead him to the sofa, not caring if the fabric got ruined.

He could afford a new one anyway.

"She's dead Saturn...I..."

"Relax, my dear, you're pale as a ghost."

"I killed her, Saturn!"

"Calm down. Hysterics will get you no where." He stood up once again, "Drink?"

Titan looked up and politely shook his head. Saturn moved to the side and grabbed a cigarette, offering one to the other. This time he accepted and lit it with shakey hands.

The two sat in silence for several minutes before Titan snuffed out the flame on the ash tray, seemingly calmed significantly.

"Now, what happened."

"It was Chrysalis."

"Chrysalis? But you were so fond of her."

"We had been out drinking, celebrating everyone's latest success when we found ourselves on the rooftop. I'm not sure how it happened but...there was a fight. A heated one too..."

He looked up at Saturn who nodded for him to continue.

"She said something that really riled me up. I can't even remember what it was but I got so angry and I pushed her. She stumbled...and fell right off the edge. Didn't even have time to scream..."

Saturn just sat there for a moment, mulling things over.

"I don't know what to do. I'm a murderer! I've murdered her Saturn! I'm going to go to jail! I-"

"Where's the body?"

"I- What?"

"What did you do with the body?"

A chill went up Titans spine. He's never seen Saturn this ice cold.

"I- I threw her in the wood burner."

"I see...I'll have one of my guys collect the ashes and dispose of them."

"You'll what?"

"They'll be able to connect her disappearance with the ashes. It'll only be a matter of time."

Saturn mutters to himself.

"I'll have someone turn the ashes into something, something inconspicuous. Like rings."

"Oh my god."

"What is it, dear?"

"It's all just hit me...she's really gone. She's gone and you're going to turn her into jewellery."

His vision started to burn, tears falling from his face. How pathetic was he, crying in front of his mentor.

But Saturn just knelt down and produced a hankerchief from his pocket, drying Titans tears.

"You are one of the people I trust most, Titan. You're my protege, soon to be business partner. We'll protect you. I'll protect you."

"You mean it?"

He smiles.

"Of course. I'd never let my most trusted associate rot away in a prison cell for petty murder. Besides, this type of business comes with the job."

"What do you mean?"

"You don't get to this position without dirtying your conscious. Now go get cleaned up, you'll catch your death."

Titan hesitates for a moment before getting up, now aware at how heavy the sodden suit feels on him.

He takes a glance back at Saturn who had migrated towards the landline before trudging up the stairs to his makeshift room. Each step felt as if he were made of lead, the weight of his sins weighing him down as he grappled with what transpired this night.

A night that would most definitely come back to haunt him.

That's the thing about karma, no bad deed goes unpunished, and only time will tell when it will come back to bite him tenfold
