all this over a 𝙥𝙝𝙤𝙣𝙚?

Summary:

a tangle of limbs tumble to the floor.

naruto takes the brunt of the fall, landing on his back. his left arm remains stretched high and out of hinata’s shorter reach, with her phone still in clutch.

his other arm had caught hinata when her bodyweight crashed against him, the latter thinking she could use that to her advantage. a rookie mistake that only ended up backfiring.

but…did it?

Work Text:

“hinaaaa.”

oh, she knows that voice anywhere. nothing good ever comes of it.

…just kidding!

hinata, mid (fond) eye roll, turns with her books in embrace, peering up into the baby blues of her best friend and favorite person in the entire world.

“yes, may I help you, naruto-kun?”

who, by the mischievous look in them, paired perfectly with the boyish, lopsided grin, is definitely up to no good. noticeably taller after that summer break, he’s a little broader in the shoulders. the playfulness in his voice runs a notch deeper now.

“yeah. what're you doin’ saturday night?”

“studying. for my midterm.” they've gone over this, clearly. “which is what you should be doing, mister!” the heiress adds with a pointed look.

“pssh, midterm?” naruto snorts. he never sweats over academic stress. (he insists there are more important things to worry about. like what ramen he's gonna eat later. so many options. he's already drooling.) “I'm not the one who needs her entire five star notebook color coordinated,” he adds, running his fingers along the seams of said notebook to further prove his point, “with a billion dividers.”

hinata on the other hand? chronic overthinker, honors and AP student, will cry if someone raises their voice at her. “well, not all of us can operate with one singular notebook that's falling apart with…water damage?” she observes the poor state of naruto’s orange notebook tucked under his palm; tattered, and worn, with a mechanical pencil tucked into the side. “oh, naruto-kun…”

naruto ignores the gentle jab. he goes along with their banter with a lazy eye roll of his own while maintaining his sunny disposition. his hair, defying all kinds of gravity, is only cut off halfway through his headband. shirt unironed, half untucked, loose tie, worn shoes.

and somehow, he couldn't be more endearing.

“you know we have these things called computers, right?”

and he knows hinata never meant any harm. it wasn't until recently when he found out his best friend had some fire to her. and she found out how sensitive naruto could be.

maybe ‘cause they've been hangin’ out too much. heh.

“oh, yes. they are very useful! …is there a point we're getting to?” hinata asks while shifting her feet, ultimately leaning her back against her locker. batting eyelashes. playful squint. narrowed gaze. manicured fingernails faintly drumming over her AP chemistry book.

“let's try this again…”

naruto, too, pivots, while lowering his voice and leaning down. one hand in pocket, the other braces right above her head.

and this…is where her heartbeat jumps a little.

he blatantly ignores the looks from passing students.

“what're you doin’ saturday night?”

hinata stands strong, tilts her chin at him. teasing smile. says without a beat, “studying.”

naruto frowns deeply. “no…”

“studying…and hanging out with you?” she guesses innocently.

“hinata.”

“naruto-kun. you haven't told me anything yet. what are you planning?”

then, a scary thought comes.

“you're not throwing another party, are you?”

because if he is, then he knows exactly where he'll find her.

in his room,

door locked,

and watching her anime. alone, please!

(hinata hates parties. he knows she hates parties. too bad naruto knows how to throw one.)

“nah.” naruto stares her dead in the eye. “but I do want you over my house.” cheeky.

they would swear up and down they weren’t flirting. the lack of personal space? naruto doesn’t know what that is. plus, it’s not his fault hinata stopped growing at age fourteen. he has to bend down now sometimes.

hinata rolls her tongue over her teeth. unlike naruto, she is hyperaware of the stares they were getting and she does not want to be the subject of the gossip today. maybe they were standing a bit close… “okay,” she gives up quietly. “okay. but why can't I study at your house?”

naruto’s grin stretches wider.

she tries not to think too much into the way he absentmindedly twists the ends of her long hair before he steps back, giving her space. she’s secretly grateful. the sudden spike in her heartbeat is traitorous.

“ma's cookin’. says she’s been missin’ ya face. whaddaya say?”

hinata's eyes light up. kushina.

well, that's all he had to say!

naruto’s mom was, by extension, everyone’s mom. despite being nearly identical to his father, minato, he actually favored kushina more in the face. and the personality.

hinata’s mother passed when hanabi was two, which made hiashi…colder.

“can I come over tonight, too?”

so it’s safe to say she’s formed an attachment.

“hinata! welcome in. you’re just in time for supper. we were just cleaning up.”

“thank you, minato-sama.”

hinata bows her head as she steps inside the warmth that is the uzumaki household. her reality back home was…cold in comparison, right down to the modern, cooler toned color palette that covered chateau hyuga.

“I hope I’m not interrupting,” she trails off bashfully as she steps out of each shoe, nudging them closer to a pair of sneakers that she knew to be naruto’s.

“not at all. you are always welcome.”

peering up into minato’s patient gaze made hinata wonder what naruto would look like when he got older. she hopes minato doesn’t mistake the warmth in her cheeks.

“follow me.”

hinata nods with a smile, following the tall man through the short trek to the kitchen, where she can already hear kushina and naruto chatting.

“is that my sweet hinata?” kushina calls out, and more warmth blossoms in her chest. she’s home.

“hi, mother!” hinata calls back softly from behind minato. minato chuckles and returns to the sink, where he had been doing dishes. the uzumakis didn’t always cook together, but when they did, they shared a unique rhythm as they moved around each other in the kitchen. no one bumped into each other. kushina leads the kitchen effortlessly, with naruto being her sous chef, and her husband happily cleaning after them.

minato brushes kushina’s back with his palm as he passes behind her. the simplest of actions and yet hinata felt wrong for looking for too long.

“your sweet hinata? she was mine first…!” naruto grumbles that last part, narrowly avoiding his mother’s swat at him. instead, his eyes go straight to hinata, and when her gaze meets his, he visibly straightens and stops mid-chop.

“hey! you made it!”

it takes everything in hinata to not start smiling and giggling like a school girl.

“of course! I wouldn’t miss — eep!”

naruto had calmly set down the knife. (good call, nart.)

reached her in three long strides.

scooped her up in his arms.

and made a one-eighty spin.

hinata only had one option, and that was to cling.

naruto ignores kushina’s smirk, because, didn’t he just finish telling her it wasn’t “like that” between him and hinata? he is not helping his case here. minato’s not so subtle cough to cover his smile. and by the time he sets hinata down, she is so. red.

something swells in his chest. was it pride? smugness?

“you didn’t bring your book bag, did ya…”

his stomach is doing backflips.

hinata’s gaze falters, flits between him and the kitchen tile. “n-no…I-! I told you I wouldn’t!”

his eyes drop the eyeline. “good.”

she taps her pointer fingers. “wh-wha…?”

“hinata…” kushina calls her innocently.

hinata blinks, immediately snapping at attention. “coming, mother!” she chimes, practically skipping to kushina’s side. naruto coughs and scratches his left cheek. he’s feeling really hot right now.

kushina squeezes hinata warmly. hinata cuddles further into her.

“can I help you with anything?” hinata offers when kushina lets her go. “I can -”

kushina is already shaking her head, patting hinata’s cheek with a mother’s fondness. “no, honey. you’re our guest.”

she’s going to insist. “b-but I -”

“ma! she can help me set the table,” naruto offers. his arm brushes hinata’s when he braces against the counter. completely by accident and no other reason.

“please,” hinata adds, albeit slightly breathless. she’s noticing.

but she brushes him back as she shifts her weight. the curve of her hip gently presses against the side of his thigh as she does so. completely by accident and no other reason.

kushina hums.

minato leans over.

“that'll be just fine,” he addresses the two teens.

“sweet. c'mon, hinata!”

“coming!”

“how was school, you two?”

naruto shrugs, mouth half full. “it came and went. boring as hell.”

“naruto! don't talk while you eat.”

“sorry.” still kinda doin’ it.

“son.”

naruto slurps the last of his clear soup.

hinata covers her mouth as she chews, and three different sets of eyes flit to her face.

“hinata. how's your sister doing?” kushina helps move the conversation along, giving hinata more time to chew thoroughly. “is she still doing ballet?”

hinata nods with a little smile that shone with pride just as bright. “yes.”

“and your father?” minato asks, mindful and careful.

“doing well.”

the resident therapist does not dive any further. they were not on paid time, and now wasn't an appropriate time to unpack. “good. send him our warm regards.”

“of course, minato-sama.”

naruto leans back, angled to hinata's right. he runs his tongue over his teeth and sighs.

the brush of his pinky over hers is under the table. intentional. supportive. hiashi was a touchy subject. there was love there, yes, but…

it's complicated.

hinata casts a glance, discreet.

she slides her palm closer, to gently return the action without drawing his parents attention too closely. her throat feels significantly tighter. she swallows it down.

maybe she'll ask kushina for another hug later.

or maybe her and naruto could —

“and please tell my little firecracker I said hello,” kushina adds, never to forget anyone. “I would love to come to one of her recitals.”

“hanabi would love that…”

“yeah! we can all go.”

hinata glows. we.

which meant naruto would be there.

and he'd sit next to her.

and maybe…

“I-I'll be sure to speak with her about it!” she squeaks out, taking her hand away from naruto's to shove both of hers in her lap, growing more bashful by the second. the rest of dinner goes by with flying colors, and in the end, hinata leaves the table with naruto with a full belly and a lighter state of mind.

“o-kay, we're goin’ upstairs!” naruto announces, fingers wrapped around hinata's wrist.

“‘kay! leave your door open!”

“ma! it's not like that, ‘ttebayo!”

“hey! I wasn't born yesterday, ‘ttebane!”

“whatcha lookin’ at, ‘nata…”

they've been chillin’. probably for about an hour.

“n-nothing!”

“you just stammered.”

uuuntil —

“yes?”

“you’re lyin’.”

hinata suspiciously became too focused in whatever was goin’ on in her phone…

“no, I’m not.”

and surely, she wasn't doin’ what naruto thinks she was doin’...

“thennn let me see your phone.”

hinata frowns at him.

“no.”

he blinks at her. the f —

“why not?”

hinata blinks back, answer simple.

“because I have every right to my own privacy?”

…touché.

“fat chance.” he points an accusing finger. “you’re lookin’ at your notes.”

“no!” too quick, she responds too quickly. uh huh. got her. “no. no, no, no, no -”

too little, too late!

“give. it.” naruto demands, palm out. knees over.

“naruto-kun!”

“hand it over!”

“no way!”

“give - it -”

“you - give - it -”

“stop - bein’ - fuckin’ - so - stubborn!”

“naru - to -!”

“let - go -!”

“ah!”

“huh!”

a tangle of limbs tumble to the floor.

naruto takes the brunt of the fall, landing on his back. his left arm remains stretched high and out of hinata’s shorter reach, with her phone still in clutch.

his other arm had caught hinata when her bodyweight crashed against him, the latter thinking she could use that to her advantage. a rookie mistake that only ended up backfiring.

but…did it?

in her desperation to get her phone back, and throw naruto offguard, she ended up being the one sending them both off the bed. her chin aches from the fall, otherwise cushioned by naruto’s chest.

she blinks once. twice. pink in the face. palm flat against his arm, fingers stopping short several inches from the hand that still holds her phone captive. fingers of her free hand had balled around his shirt in an instinctive cling.

naruto is just as red, peering back up at her. when she moves, he loosens his grip around her waist, but doesn’t let her go just yet. her milky thighs bracket his, soft and pressed. his heart goes into overdrive.

this is close. this is way too close.

oh god, oh god, oh god, oh fuck -

“you good?”

his voice comes out huskier, out of his control. but it’s there.

“I’m okay,” hinata whispers. she still hasn’t moved. why can’t she move? why…

why is he staring at her mouth —

“it’s probably a bad idea if we kiss, right.”

oh.

her heart jolts.

that’s it.

and maybe this way she can…get her phone back.

surely, it's the only logical reason she can come up with! but her head is already spinning.

“definitely a bad idea.”

hinata drops. hopes to gods.

naruto catches her lips, leaving her no room to miss him. to say that he’s never imagined what she’d taste like would leave him with a guilty conscience, because he has. and he may be sporting a little headache right now, and he may regret this later, but he’s taking any win he can get.

hinata whimpers above him and he groans into her mouth when she doesn't stop wiggling in his lap. “hinata…”

he sits up with her still in place, hips canting. she pulls him with her, arms looped around his neck. hands in his hair. he supports her neck as she arches her spine as their heads tilt, dipping, kisses deepening. she's letting him lead. she has little to zero experience. their noses bump a few times, but naruto would draw her closer whenever he felt her begin to falter.

he doesn't know how long he has, or how far she was gonna let him take this. the last thing he wanted to do was take advantage of someone he cared about. hinata hyuga was high on that list.

but that doesn't mean she was making it easier for him.

she was actually doing the exact opposite.

hinata sighs against his mouth, like she had been waiting for this, for as long as he did. the line was drawn. they crossed it as soon as she crossed his threshold that night. and he could blame it on the hormones, pheromones, whatever. it was more than that. and naruto could feel it.

which meant that hinata felt it, too.

there's no telling when his mom would come knocking after hearing the loud thunp coming from upstairs. maybe she'll even send minato. which was all kinds of worse because naruto will never hear the end of it after hinata leaves.

until then…

he was gonna enjoy it.

hinata has never felt more overwhelmed. overstimulated. over him. on top of him. naruto is everywhere. and yet she can't stop pulling him closer. voicing her consent when he asks her, “still good?” while mouthing over her neck. “I won't leave any marks on ya…”

her body reacts to him, leaving her brain no chances of ever catching up. and she's secretly not so secretly okay with it? “no. please.” and she's not sure which statement she is responding to. a little part of her even hopes one of his parents will call for him, or her, or…or…

“can I lay you down?”

she's already nodding again. the way she clings to him as he shifts beneath her to stand is almost too intimate. cheeks pressed flush. naruto's hands encasing her thighs. he turns and kneels down on his bed one leg at a time.

their eyes meet. naruto pauses.

“you okay?” he checks again, reaching for her hand.

“I'm okay,” she breathes, not trusting her voice just yet. their fingers lace together.

“ya sure? ‘nata, you're shakin’...” he squeezes her trembling fingers. maybe she's just nervous. “it's just me.”

“I know.” she blinks those big, doe eyes up at him. “naruto-kun…are we -? what are we -?”

“...I don't know.”

“do you…um…”

she can't finish it. if she finishes, it makes this real.

do you like me?

naruto lowers. slowly.

his other arm braces between her arm and her ribs, careful not to crush her with his weight. he slants his lips over hers while still holding her hand. their fingers squeeze. the way he kisses her now is a lot softer, and chaste. he takes his time and savors every deep intake of breath.

her leg pauses mid-hike, falling into his open palm as he slides it down. he brings the slender limb back over the base of his spine. their hips grind. just a tad

naruto groans against her mouth involuntarily. he tries not to think about her skirt riding up either. and that maybe if they do it again, it could feel good. and then if they do it again, it could feel really good.

but would she want to?

has she ever…

no.

don't even think about goin’ there with her.

imagining…someone else making her sigh and whimper his name. not naruto's.

no.

and to think…all this over her phone?

he should've thought of this sooner, ‘ttebayo.

her soft hands bring him back to the present, pressing even softer kisses to his face. his eyebrows crease. his heart is skipping beats.

“can I have my phone back? please?”

naruto stiffens. yep. she's using that voice. while batting those eyelashes.

she really had the fuckin’ audacity.

“...yeah,” he mutters. “since you want it so bad.”

he leans back on his knees, mood soured.

hinata picks up on the energy shift immediately.  she folds her arms across her chest self consciously, with rosy cheeks and tousled hair. maybe she shouldn't have said anything. maybe she could have worded it better…?

because now she has him thinking she used him.

it doesn't take long for naruto to find it, laying facedown on the carpet. as he bends, three soft knocks finally sound at his door.

definitely minato.

(kushina would have barged in.)

(she told him not to close that door.)

naruto doesn't look at hinata. he tosses her phone lightly at the foot before he answers the door.

“what's up?”

“just checking in. everything alright?”

“yeah.”

“your mother thought she heard something crash.”

“we were just messin’ around.”

“oh?”

“not like that!”

“mhm. hinata?”

hinata clears her throat, smoothing down her hair as the older man leans in the doorframe. “yes, sir?”

“are you alright?”

“yes! we were…um…”

“I was bein’ a dumbass and fell off the bed. she was just tryin’ to study, so.”

“is that so?”

“yes.”

minato stares back at his son evenly, expression suspiciously unreadable. “alright. next time it’ll be your mother.”

naruto stiffens. “r-right. yeah.”

he closes the door behind minato, releasing the breath he had been holding. they wait until minato’s footsteps echo down the steps.

hinata breaks the silence first.

“can we talk?”

“sure.”

she tilts her head at him.

“naruto-kun.”

“hinata.”

she pouts. there is no nickname. no affectionate eye squint, or playful wink thrown in her direction. no hi-na-ta.

“you're mad.”

naruto snorts.

“no.”

“you are!”

“no, I'm not!” he laughs with no humor.

“I don't like your tone.”

“oh, yeah?”

“yeah.”

“huh.”

“did I hurt your feelings…?”

“naw, hina. that's…”

“then why aren't you looking at me the same?”

naruto frowns. there it is. “hinata…”

“and why are you so far away…?”

the more pitiful she sounds, the more she successfully cracks away at naruto's weakening defenses. he watches the way she inches towards the edge of the bed on her knees, how her gaze drops to the bed, then back up at him as she sits on her knees neatly, and his throat feels tight. it's not like her to be so open and communicative. it's not like him to be so withdrawn.

“hey…that's not fair…”

so he comes closer. because she's already winning him over.

“what?”

“don't start actin’ like you don't know.”

“hm…?” hands creeping up his chest, fingers curling around the collar. she likes the way the fabric feels between her fingers. even moreso the young man attached to it, whose body heat radiates from her touch.

naruto bends and meets her halfway. their lips brush again. “mmm…”

she confesses near breathlessness, when one kiss becomes two. when two melts into three. when naruto lifts her off the bed, and her body slides against his all the way down. “why do I have butterflies…?”

naruto pulls at the hem of her blouse, covering up her exposed skin. “dunno,” he mutters lamely. he is blushing hard.

hinata nervously smooths down her hair, still lingering close. he hasn’t exactly let go of her, either. his hands hover over her hips.

“is this how we’re settlin’ arguments now?”

hinata blinks up at him, startled. “huh?”

he wags his eyebrows. “I mean, let me know -”

“naruto-kun. this is highly inappropriate -!”

“oh, we’re a lil’ past that, don’t ya think?” her hands brace against his chest as he draws her against him, bodies flush. “you weren’t complainin’ when we were -”

“shh…!” she covers his mouth with both of her soft hands, eyes wide.

silly hina. did she really think this would stop him?

naruto can be very expressive through his eyes. and with his mouth covered, his gaze remains steady on hinata. she had leaned up on her toes to reach his eye level (she got there barely). he wiggled his eyebrows at her again, growing more smug by the second. the longer he stared, the redder her face became.

she leaves him no choice.

he licks her palm.

“eek!” she lets go and stumbles back, staring at her sullied hand. how dare he! …she’s never washing this hand again.

naruto snorts, “gotcha!”

“that’s so gross!” she pouts at him in disapproval. “why would you -?”

“you like it.”

“ugh!”

“aww, c’mon. you’re the one putting your hands on people’s faces. you can’t be gettin’ offended when you mess around and get licked.”

“I’m starting to reconsider those butterflies.”

his face fell. “you wouldn’t.”

“I’m a very anxious individual.” slowly wiping her palm off on her skirt.

“not the same.” slowly inching towards her.

“I…should be going home…”

he catches that same hand.

“stay a minute.”

offers an olive branch.

“I’ll…I’ll even let ya study?”

hinata laughs softly, and he chuckles with her, as her gaze falls to his bedroom floor.

“study…I don’t think I could even concentrate without -”

a gentle nudge under the chin has her looking back up.

and naruto leans down to steal a kiss that leaves her floating. when he pulls away, her lips are still puckered.

“stay?” he says again, quietly tracing her soft pout with his finger.

hinata blushes cutely.

“okay. just for a little bit…”
