Chapter 1: The Reunion

Chapter Text

Burt has been dealing with a lot since his wife passed. He would look at photos of her, share memories of her with Coop and Millie, etc. He’s been stressed as well dealing with Coop and Kat’s daily fights. He needed a break, so he decided to walk outside to get some fresh air. No screaming from Old Lady Munson, no rubbing in your face convos with Henry, just.. peace and quiet. That’s all he needed.

He sat on the sidewalk, looking at the clouds covering the sun. He felt the breeze and smelled the air. Just then, he heard someone’s footsteps and got startled. He looked up and noticed it was a girl just walking by. He got up and took a closer look. He thought to himself, “Hmm.. she looks familiar..” Then it hit him, it was none other than his childhood pal, Sarah. She recently moved back to Bootsville after her few years in America. She really didn’t like the vibe, so she decided to move back to Canada.

“Sarah.. is that.. you?” Burt said, as Sarah froze at the sound of her name. Then she looked at the person in front of her. “Burt..? Oh.. my gosh.. BURT!!” She screamed as she ran towards him and hugged him, crying in tears. “I can’t believe it!! After all these years..” Sarah said, then she looked up at his face, with a slight blush. He got older.. and more.. handsome than ever.

“I just noticed.. you look.. a lot different. Wow..! It definitely has been a while huh..?” Sarah said, a little flustered. “Yeah.. heh.” Burt said a little nervously. “How about you come inside? I’d like the kids to meet you.”

“YOU HAVE KIDS??” Sarah said excitedly. “That’s so cool!! I cannot WAIT to meet them! Wait.. do you have a wife?” Sarah said as Burt looked pale white. “Uhh.. I used to.. but.. an accident happened a few years ago..”

“Oh. I-I’m so sorry to hear that.. hope you’re managing well on your own. Kids can be tough to deal with as a single parent.. not that I’m one or anything but.. just saying.” Sarah said as Burt looked at her with a smile

“You never changed.. you’re still the sweet girl I met years ago..” Burt said with a tear in his eye, but he dried it up with his arm and guided Sarah to his house.

“So.. this is your house Burtie?” Sarah said but quickly covered her mouth as she realized she called him that little nickname she had for Burt when they were kids.

“Heh, yeah. Also you can still call me that, I don’t mind at all. Makes me go back to when we were so young” Burt said as he blushed a little. He was thinking how pretty Sarah has gotten over the years.

Burt opened the door as Sarah looked in disbelief. The house looked so pretty, with plants all around, colorful walls, and it just looked.. so unique to her.

“Oh my goodness, you live here?? It looks so.. amazing..” Sarah said as she looked at Burt with a sweet smile. “Yeah.. thanks.” Burt said as he blushed at her sweet words.

Coop and Millie ran down the stairs along with Kat trotting down too. They all noticed the unfamiliar girl with Burt, and got a little.. curious.

“Dad.. uhh.. who’s this?” Coop said all confused. “Oh, I thought I’d like to introduce my friend here! She was my childhood best friend when we were kids. Her name is Sarah.” Burt said as he gave Sarah courage to introduce herself to the kids.

“Hi! My name is Sarah. It’s nice to meet all of you.” Sarah said with a bright smile. Coop and Millie looked at each other, and then grinned. “Hmm.. Daddy.. are you sure she’s not your girlfriend..?” Millie said as Burt and Sarah froze and both turned red.

“WHAT?? Millie, she’s NOT my girlfriend! We are just friends, right Sarah??” Burt said, all embarrassed. “Yeah! We’re friends, nothing m-more. Why would you even say that??” Sarah said blushing all red.

“Yeah.. suuuureeee..” Coop said smirking, then he left to go watch his favorite show in the living room as Millie followed him.

Burt looked in shock, but Millie was kinda right. After seeing Sarah again after so long, he did sorta develop feelings for her, as well as Sarah with Burt. There was no denying it, it was indeed true love. But, Burt himself was still in denial, he still saw Sarah as a friend, but again was questioning himself at this point.

Sarah and Burt decided to sit down in the kitchen together and have a little talk, about things they did while being separated from each other for so long.

Burt took a sip of his coffee. “So.. Sarah.. how old are you now?” “I’m.. 36. Yeah I know, getting close to my 40’s, hehe..” Sarah said nervously. “Oh.. yeah, forgot we’re two years apart. I’m currently 38.” Sarah spat out her coffee. “HUH?? My gosh the years just flew by like that!” Sarah said as she gazed into Burt’s eyes. “Wow.. you’re.. still cute as ever..” Then Sarah froze at the sound of her words. Was she.. flirting with him..?

“Well.. you’ve gotten a lot prettier since the day I first met you.” Burt said with slight bedroom eyes. Sarah blushed and giggled. “You’re still as sweet as a cupcake Burtie..”

Coop and Millie overheard their conversation and gave each other grinning looks. They had a plan to get those two together, and maybe have a mom for once. They rushed to Coop’s room and started brainstorming together. That’s one of the few rare times they got along with each other.

Burt decided to watch some TV with Sarah, so he guided her to the living room and sat down together on the big couch. It was very comfy, almost if it was a date together, but no, love doesn’t work that fast.

Sarah got cozy with Burt and then.. they looked at each other. Burt was inches away from Sarah’s face.. were they.. gonna.. kiss?
No.. it’s way too soon.

“B-Burt..” Sarah quietly said. Burt was quite flustered, he didn’t have this feeling since ages ago with his wife. It felt.. new to him. He was breathless, and his heart was racing.

Burt didn’t want the first kiss to be this fast, so he moved back and his heart beat was normal again. Sarah was the same. They just watched TV together and pretend that didn’t happened.

A commercial break started and gave Burt the opportunity to ask something that was on his mind. “So.. Sarah, you remember Jennifer? Our other childhood buddy we used to hang out with?”

“Ooh yeah! Jennifer, I remember! How is she doing?” Sarah asked. “She’s doing fine, I last saw her a few days ago hanging out with her girlfriend, Miss Brannigan, my son’s Math teacher. I had feelings for her but it turned out she was already taken by Jennifer! I’m just silly like that sometimes.” Burt laughed as he looked back at Sarah.

“Jennifer.. likes girls? Kinda knew that was the case with her. Ever since we were kids I just knew she never rly like boys that much, hehe.. I’ve been meaning to see her again since I’m back in Bootsville.” Sarah said, as Burt chuckled a little at her remarks.

“Yeah, she came out to me on the phone that she was lesbian, so I fully support!” Burt said with a cheery smile. “Wow, that must be nice. How’s Ms. Munson? I remember she’s Jennifer’s aunt.” Sarah said

Burt froze. “Ugh, don’t even mention her. She’s the same old grumpy woman since the day we were kids. She hates everyone.. well except my daughter, but I’m still not sure why since she hates me and my son.. heh..”

“Yeah.. I never really been scared of her to be honest. To me she’s an mouse while I’m an angry lioness! Hehe!” Sarah said with a giggle.

“You know.. I’ve been meaning to ask you this Sarah, but.. do you like anyone right now..?” Burt said as Sarah blushed. “Uhm.. not really.. why are you asking?”

Burt froze, and then exhaled. “Well.. I really wanna get to know you better, since it’s been a while.. you.. wanna hang out tonight? Say.. at a restaurant? We can get a milkshake there if you’d like.”

Sarah’s face turned slight red. She hasn’t been asked out before, but to be asked out by her childhood best friend/crush, she decided to take the chance. “Sure! I’d like that.” She said with a smile

“Great! I’ll call someone to babysit the kids and then we can head on over there!” Burt said cheerfully as he was about to go to his bedroom to change.

“Wait! I don’t really have any clothes other than this I’m wearing.. mind if I borrow some?” Sarah asked. “Sure, you can borrow my wife’s old dress.” Burt said as Sarah smiled. They both got ready and revealed their outfits to each other. Burt was wearing a tux with his hair combed over, while Sarah was in a red sparkly dress with her hair covering one eye.

“You l-look.. g-great!” They both said at the same time, and then blushed. “Let’s go shall we?” Burt said as he extended his hand to Sarah, which she gladly took.

“Where are you guys going?” Coop asked as Burt and Sarah froze. “We’re going to hang out, you guys will be watched by Tina, the babysitter, okay? Don’t misbehave while we’re out sport, see ya!” Burt said as he and Sarah rushed out. Coop grinned. He knew what they were up to, and decided to let it go for now.

Burt and Sarah walked outside and to Burt’s car. “Wow, this car looks cool! Is it vintage?” Sarah asked
“Yeah it is, I’m glad you like it!!” Burt said cheerfully, as he opened the passenger door for Sarah. “Ladies first.” Burt said, as Sarah blushed and got in. Burt got into the driver’s seat and started the car. They drove off and headed their way to the restaurant.

When they arrived, Burt and Sarah got out of the car and both hold hands as they entered the restaurant. They got themselves a table and sat there. Sarah began looking at the menu and spotted something she liked. “I see this strawberry shake with whipped cream and sprinkles, can we share that Burt?” She asked. “Sure! It looks pretty good I say, we can get it.” Burt said with a smile as Sarah looked excited. She loved this little hang out with Burt already.
