Work Text:
“May I have this dance?” Izuku asked, and Shoto swore that his heart went into overdrive. The prince of their kingdom, the crown prince, falling for a commoner. It was blasphemous, yet that is what happened.
_____________
Shoto had snuck out, that is how it all started. He snuck out of the stuffy palace, with maids who only cared about serving the highest favoured son, the person on top of the hierarchy.
Unfortunately, that person was Shoto.
The maids didn’t bother to dig deeper on the days when Shoto had to go out to ‘training’, didn’t bat an eye when he returned home with more bruises than he knew what to do with.
Stuffy, uncaring politics.
When they had nothing to gain from a situation they would mostly leave him alone, preferring to get their jobs over and done with then babysit a spoiled prince.
It was on one such day that Shoto took a wild look around and tiptoed out of the palace. For something that was seemingly secure, it was actually remarkably easy to slip out.
He darted into a spare room and donned some of the cheap clothing that was stored inside. Endeavour wanted to flaunt his wealth so he made sure that every room was prepared for a guest.
He was grateful for slightly less pompous clothes now.
He hung his usual attire on a clothes hanger and disappeared out the door.
He was excited, obviously, when he first caught a glimpse of the city that lay outside the castle. He pulled a hat that he had found at the stables over his recognisable hair and went to look around the kingdom.
It was beautiful. The streets were cobbled and paved as merchants sold their wares beside him, the streets bustled with lively chatter and people laughed as they watched their children play.
If one were to take a path in any cardinal direction and walk far enough, they would come across rolling hills and flowers dotting grassy plains. Shoto knew that if he wanted to walk further he would soon come across larger cities, small villages, anything a person could dream of.
His father’s kingdom, outside of Yagi's, was one of the largest after all.
He walked to the East, where the flowers gathered the most. He sat down and brushed the petals with the back of his hand.
He wanted to stay here forever, the gentle breeze slightly cool against his skin and the beautiful flowers rustling along with it.
Unfortunately he had to get a move on. The king would call for him soon, and heads would roll if he found Shoto missing.
The second time out of the palace was much the same. Shoto getting some peace and quiet in a field of flowers as he abandoned all thoughts of being a crown prince just for a while.
It was on the third visit that he met Midoriya.
The green-haired boy was largely inconspicuous when he had first crossed Shoto’s view. In a world full of such hair colours, it was no wonder that green didn’t draw the eye. Especially considering the dark forest green wasn’t nearly as blaring as, say, a more neon version.
He was disturbed when a crown of flowers was placed on his head.
He turned swiftly around at the first touch of it. How had somebody even managed to sneak up on him? He had the royal training of the kingdom of Endeavour.
Green eyes stared back at him, the kid altogether reminded him of a broccoli, though that wasn’t a bad thing.
“I’m Izuku, why are you sitting out here all alone?”
They soon became friends.
Okay so maybe it wasn’t the best idea to become friends with a random stranger who had snuck up on you armed with a flower crown and a cheerful grin, but Shoto needed some semblance of normalcy in his life.
Besides, Izuku was fun to hang around, he hated Shoto’s father, an immediate win in Shoto’s books, and he was caring in a way that only Fuyumi could match.
From then on, every time Shoto snuck out, he would search to catch a glimpse of the slightly darker green hair of his first friend outside of the palace.
Shoto never believed in love, he knew it was sort of cliche, but it was true. He was very careful around any people of the opposite gender he hung out with, just in case it would interfere with politics in some way.
He also knew that he wasn’t very attracted to others in general, instead preferring to get close to them in a platonic manner.
It had taken him ages to get accustomed to Yaomomo and she had been around him since he had first started going to balls at the age of 8.
She was kind, but he knew he would never have any romantic feelings for her. Besides, he had heard that she was interested in another.
He hadn’t bothered to find out who, but he was regretting that now. He wanted to ask her how they had met, how she had known that they were the one.
Because he was falling, or at least he thought so. Every single time the thought of Izuku - he could call them by their first name now - crossed his mind, he could feel the heat rising to his face.
The maids went off to do their own thing and Shoto quickly donned his ‘commoner outfit.’ He was ready to see Izuku again.
Shoto firmly believed that Izuku was the best thing that could have ever happened to him, there was nothing to prove that statement false.
___________
He had fallen in love with a commoner. They were dancing together in the light of the sun, and Izuku smiled at him.
There were no words to describe how Shoto felt when he looked at Izuku, not enough time to reveal the depths of Shoto’s emotions. But if it could be summarised in a single sentence, it was this one. Izuku could make Shoto believe in Angels.
Shoto was ready to run off with Izuku, into the sunset, far away from the responsibilities his father had laid upon his shoulders.
He was certain that just for now, just for now he could stay. For a little while longer.
