Curiosity doesn't always kill the cat

Work Text:

It was quiet within the facility but that wasn't abnormal within these halls not because there'd been a breach, lack of staff or any anomalies it was because this was site-01.. Ah yes site-01 the Foundation HQ which the only anomalies the site housed was the O5 council

The halls were mostly silent save for the rhythmic click of heels and boots that kept getting louder and louder as they grew closer to sector 1 east wing which was the administrative area specifically with offices of the overseers but the two people walked past them clearly searching for something as they slid through the long hallway that felt as if stretched of forever one moved like a shadow the other as if the layout of said sector had been burned into her memories by the most scorching flames. As the made it past the final office that had a plaque with the name 'Office of O5-13' one of the people paused and stood there as the other continued walking and only stopped once they noticed the other wasn't following

"Something caught your eye, Véres?"

The person who'd stopped in front looked back tilting their head at the other person, Véres, who'd stood there looking at the plaque with confusion written across their face

"Since when do they actually have an office?"

Véres spoke confusion evident in their voice as they looked at the plaque

"Oh them? Huh... I actually never noticed that.."

Véres looked at the plaque one last time before before their eyes moved towards the office door as if deciding to knock on it before they made up their mind and decided to catching up with the person in front as they continued their walk through the hallway in absolute graveyard silence
A short walk later they made it out of the seemingly endless hallway and through the on-site greenhouse which had floor to ceiling windows that stretched down the entire hall giving the two of them a nice view of the waves when they hit the cliffs but it was currently hard to see due to it being late at night in ███ ██████. Once the two made it to the security door the person in front pulled out their administrative key-card from the breast pocket of there coat

"Lara, it's a biometric scan of the hand not a key-card scanner."

Véres spoke the other person's name for the first time within this entire walk

"Right.. apologizes."

"No it's alright we all make mistakes like that."

Lara put the key card back into her pocket and reached for the glove on her right hand taking it off in one go as she pressed her now unloved hand against the biometric scanner which opened the door with a sharp hiss. The order woman waited for them to walk past the door first before she followed them past the door which finally closed
They went straight before making a left turn and finally made it to their destination an office with a plaque that read 'office of the Administrator'

"Why exactly do we need to see her right now?"

"I don't know either, she hadn't spoken a word to me just sent Elias to my quarters and told me that she wanted you and me at her office."

"At 10 p.m?"

the two looked at each other as if trying to telepathically communicate as to what they'd been summoned to the Administrator's office at such a time, but there was no time to waste with something as trivial of looking into each other's eyes which ones being more hollow that the others
The older sighed as she pressed her hand on the biometric scanner once more but this time on an office door only difference being that she walked in first with them following after, door closing with a satisfying hiss

Before them behind a mahogany desk sat a woman of porcelin doll like appearance resembling the outfit style of the mid to late 1800s but if said porcelin doll was the size of an adult woman of the age 20, but the lower jaw from under the nose to chin completely shattered off... this was the Administrator

"You called up ma'am?"

Lara spoke pulling out a chair for Véres across the desk. To which they sat down as Lara leaned against a nearby bookshelf

`Yes, I did, though not for work but out of stories I'd liked to share with you two`

The woman behind the desk stiffly with the limited movement of their hands even after having joints added to the fine porcelin
Their crimson eyes light up at the mention of stories, clearly Véres had a love for stories judging by their reaction

"What kind of stories ma'am?"

Véres spoke trying to hide their minor excitement from the woman sitting before them

`Stories regarding the recruitment of the overseer council, I trust you both know the curiosity along with speculation regarding their recruitment to this organization so I'd like to share it with you two`

The doll signed gesturing towards the old dusty leather-bound journal in the middle of the mahogany desk
The older curious herself pulled out her own chair beside Véres and reached for it with her left hand and began to read from the first chapter titled 'mechanical gears of a child's dreams' and began to read..
