No Longer the Same but Our Love Doesn’t Have to Change

Prompt: Feline

Work Text:

   Yuki waited by the windowsill.

She sat atop the white painted wooden panes on her bottom and then on her belly and then on her back. She rotated through the most comfortable sitting positions – and then some uncomfortable positions, too, just to flex but the result was not quite what she vied for. Even if it was quite the splendid afternoon and the windowsill had many boons such as the sunshine that it filtered.

She let the late afternoon sunshine cascade over her fur and illuminate her from mere white to the purest silver. She basked in its warmth with her eyes closed and she waited.

   And she waited.

   And she waited.

Until she could take it no more. She had done all that she could to seem prim and enchanting but Mayu had, thus far, not taken her bait. Really, Yuki ought to praise the restraint that Mayu demonstrated as she remained hunkered down over her homework but instead, Yuki took it as a mild insult. Why today of all days, she asked herself and resisted the urge to audibly pout over the issue.

Mayu hardly ever resisted her allure but this afternoon was different somehow. Yuki was not fully sure as to why was acting so distant. Though today had not been troubling, it had not been without its qualms. There had been an unexpected pop quiz during the first period of classes and at the midday break, Mayu dropped her tray and lost some – but not all, thankfully – of her lunch. Then, to top it off, there was all this homework to do.

Surely, by now, some stress would have built up and alongside it, the need to release it.

Yuki had already finished the homework. She took schooling more seriously than Komugi but not as seriously as either Mayu or Iroha. There was simply no need. At best, she just had to keep up the illusion of being an average student despite her anything but average origins of being a cat. But still, she put a little bit of effort in but nowhere near the hours’ worth that Mayu was grinding.

The late spring days which bordered on summer were blithe and long but not long enough. The sun moved on eventually. The windowsill lost its lustre as the sun’s angle decreased and it sank beneath the skyline of other houses and tall trees. Yuki licked her paw contemptuously.

When, oh when, was she going to get her kisses from Mayu… She might be neither stressed nor troubled but she still wanted them.

She hopped down off the windowsill and onto Mayu’s bed. Her blanket was sprawled over Mayu’s doona and Yuki attached herself to her precious territory immediately. She rolled over onto her back, wiggling against the worn and fluffy blanket, and released a deep meow from within her stomach. She vied towards Mayu who had her back towards her as she remained hunkered down over her desk but still.

Look at her, look at her, she had to be looked at! She was magnificent. Her belly fur that rippled, her darling and triangular ears, her paws lifted ever so cutely and her tail that wagged. Yuki was the perfect picture of cuteness and Mayu couldn’t have cared less.

So, Yuki reached her breaking point. She sat up, her paws properly together, and asked, “Mayu, why are you ignoring me?”

Mayu prickled at the accusation. She jerked about, dropped her pencil and robotically turned around her seat. Its legs squeaked against the wooden floor as she looked shocked at Yuki’s words. Yuki simply blinked, no big deal.

“I-I-I’m not ignoring you!” Mayu stammered. “I would never!” She had such a complex surrounding the issue but Yuki was Yuki.

She knew Mayu better than even herself and she knew the difference between Mayu’s concentration and her ignorance. The latter of which was feigned and poorly construed, the former was genuine passion which blockaded her into a world of her own.

Right now, with her pencil and paper, Mayu was very much not in a world of her own making, gone beyond the limits of her creativity. She was procrastinating, putting something off, and quite possibly, long since finished her homework and was now pretending to be preoccupied for some reason that vexed Yuki.

“Then what’s the matter?” Yuki asked as she tilted her head to the side.

“Well, the problem is…” Mayu warbled, she fidgetted with her fingers, her thumbs ducked and weaved as her voice trailed off. Her face went pink. “I want to… I want to kiss you very much but…”

Yuki was delighted by the response, of course. How very Mayu! And self-gratifying that as always, Yuki was correct when it came to her read on her nearest and dearest but still. The problem remained at bay and quite murky before Mayu found the words within herself that she wanted to use.

“It just feels wrong and weird now that, you know…” Mayu mumbled. “You can talk and transform into… into… into…”

“A Pretty Cure?” Yuki attempted to supply the word she thought Mayu needed in her stutter but no.

Mayu shook her head, her tousled hair further came loose to frame her face as she went as pink as she possibly could, “A very pretty girl…” Mayu finally confessed.

   Oh.

But Yuki was Yuki no matter what form she took. She was always graceful and elegant, a little bit mean but more playful than not, and of course, her heart wide open to Mayu above all.

Though, from Mayu’s point of view, she might have had a point, Yuki reluctantly relented. At first, they were strangers of the most intimate kind: Yuki knew everything, Mayu knew nothing but she knew what she felt: fleeting attraction, aesthetic appreciation. That other Yuki – with long, blonde hair and two legs to stride upon, who wore clothes and had not a single whisker to her name – was quite different to the normal Yuki: a cat.

This was troublesome. Humans invented all kinds of inconveniences for themselves. This was one of them, Yuki supposed.

Yuki bowed her head, “It's not weird, I promise.” she said.

“That’s a relief.” Mayu sighed, she put her hand on her heart and her whole body slumped forward. She crinkled into a meagre smile on her lips as she looked up and met Yuki’s gaze. Her blue eyes were full of wonder and more.

Kisses and cuddles were an ongoing and often fraught tug of war between them. Sometimes Mayu wanted them when Yuki did not, sometimes Yuki wanted them when Mayu didn’t. The ability to talk was seemingly going to fix this communication issue but now it just introduced new awkward problems of consent and clunkiness. Being too straightforward was about as much burden as being coy, it seemed but still.

Yuki was happy enough to have relieved Mayu of all her little transgressions and finally get the kisses that she wanted.

Mayu smiled even bigger as she got up and rearranged her maxi-skirt before flomp. She joined Yuki on her big and soft bed. They curled into each other and yes, finally, Yuki revelled in the sensation of Mayu’s kiss. She was kissed and smooched, Mayu’s face buried into her with reckless abandon and glee. The feeling of her face into fur and the warmth and giggles that they shared. Her lips grazed Yuki’s belly.

It was just like old times, the before times…

“Oh, this is bliss…” Mayu crooned. She inhaled deep Yuki’s smell as she nuzzled her face against all of Yuki’s small, soft body.

“Thank you, Mayu.” Yuki murmured as she snuggled closer.

Her whims ranged far and wide. More often than not, Mayu couldn’t predict her capricious ways. Even Yuki wasn’t sure when she wanted things, sometimes she would change her mind half through and reject them. Not right now, however, not quite now.

   But Yuki couldn’t help herself.

Things were different now. Vastly so. That, too, needed to be addressed and normalised. It was a different and marvellous thing to be a Pretty Cure: the power and the responsibility of it all was grand. Yuki was still learning to not use her claws, Mayu was still learning to use her voice but they were figuring it out together, as equals: not one to be more protected than the other.

With the closing of her eyes and the opening of the compact, Yuki transformed into her other self. Mayu squealed, she called Yuki’s name but all it was met with was impish laughter.

A brilliance of light changed it all, firmly putting the affection into the after times. Yuki snuggled in closer. She stretched her arms out and she wrapped them around Mayu’s neck and shoulders. The giggle on her lips was spirited as she kissed and cuddled Mayu, kissed the edge of her lips and the side of her cheek. Her skin burned warm with sudden embarrassment. Out of curiosity, Yuki licked her.

“Wh-What are you doing?” Mayu squeaked.

“I’ve been hinting all afternoon,” Yuki pouted, “that I want to be spoiled but the truth of the matter is… I want to spoil you as well.”

“Eh?” Mayu exclaimed with an owlish blink.

Pleased by the shocked expression on Mayu’s face, Yuki smothered her with kisses. One after another. Needy and wanting. Mayu was so soft and splendid. Yuki couldn’t get enough of it, of her smell and the powders that she used to cover her face and the spritz of perfume that lingered. It was heavenly as Yuki allowed herself to be fully enthralled by what this form permitted her.

Slowly but surely, Mayu eased into Yuki’s overabundance of adoration. She kissed back. Albeit gingerly. She had little to no technique. Even with all the practice from kissing Yuki as a cat, it was different. The good kind of different, of course. They were on more of an even footing as Yuki reached out. She held Mayu by her chin as she pulled back, her lips glistening and kiss swollen as she studied Mayu’s cuteness.

“I love you,” Yuki confessed, “and I want you to know that, no matter what happens, what comes between us, these forms and magics we have been gifted by the Niko Garden.”

“I love you, too, Yuki, I don’t want things to be weird between us, too.” Mayu replied but things undoubtedly were.

Yuki didn’t want it to be taboo. She recognised that it was – and possibly for even good reason but Mayu was hers and she was Mayu’s. It didn’t matter if they were animals, if they were humans, if they were the saviours of Niko Garden, as far as Yuki was concerned: she and Mayu were made of the same stardust and same snowdrift. They loved each other. That could never be changed nor made forbidden between them, Yuki would ensure it.
