Water fills her lungs as her head is pushed underwater. Steph gasps as she resurfaces, coughing out a mouth full of water. Her fingers scramble on her neck searching for the emergency release on her cape. She heaves another breath as the heavy fabric skinks into the water.
A spot of pink bobs across from her, floating on the waves. Now that Steph feels more steady she swims towards it. The pink mass becomes more defined as she approaches until she can make out Greta, nearly unconscious as she lets herself drift aimlessly.
"Fuck." Steph lifts Greta up by the armpits while squeeze her other arm around her torso to try and push out any water. Greta sputters out a cough the water expelling from her lungs. A soft 'ugh' escapes from her but no other signs of life emerges. "I'll get us out," she promises, grimacing as she remembers the odds.
They were stuck fifty miles from shore after getting thrown off boat by their target. No one would search for them until morning and Steph was being weighed down. She could ditch her belt, but it would scatter more of her trackers. Maybe Steph should have taken a page from the bat playbook and forced the former hero off the mission, but she knew how frustrating it was to have someone hijack your show. Plus her spontaneous date had been making a great cover.
Steph watched as the stars turned bleary, exhaustion setting in. It was nice out.
