Neon Lights On Snowflakes.

Summary:

Can love melt ice?

Work Text:

Snow piled up on the side of the streets, the sidewalk was slippery and Miyuki was concentrating more on stepping carefully than he was the way Kuramochi was holding his hand. It wasn't as though he could even feel the other's skin through the gloves, but still he could feel the incredible warmth coming off of Kuramochi's hand and even then he couldn't focus on it. If he slipped and fell here Kuramochi would never let him live it down, hell he'd probably end up taking the other with him, he just wasn't prepared to wear that kind of shame this early in their relationship.

"You're walking like Bambi," Kuramochi chuckled.

"I'm being careful and considerate, wouldn't want to take you down with me and seriously injure someone," Miyuki returned haughtily.

"Maybe you should buy practical boots instead of wearing sneakers on ice," Kuramochi said, brow arched as he smiled sharply at the other.

"Hey, I just haven't gotten around to it yet," Miyuki looking down toward the end of the street. Neon spilled into the darkness of the December night from the storefronts, snow began to fall again, softly drifting down from the sky before his eyes. It was gentle and fell in such a way that it made the shopping district seem magical, no matter how clichéd that was.

"Maybe I'll get you a pair for Christmas," Kuramochi mused, breaking Miyuki from his reverie.

"What, why?" Miyuki sputtered, caught off guard despite the fact that he'd already brought Kuramochi a gift, it was just a little touching in the kind of way neither of them usually were.

"Because that's what boyfriends do," Kuramochi giggled, revelling in Miyuki's reaction.

"Yeah, but it's a nice thing to do," Miyuki replied, smiling sharply as he tried to save face.

"I am occasionally capable of doing something nice, unlike you," Kuramochi returned, easily falling into their usual rally of false insults and banter. This was far more comfortable than dancing on the edge of compliments and sweet nothings, neither of them were that great at it but Kuramochi seemed to be better at it than Miyuki. Miyuki's brain would splutter and whir as he tried to register the kindness being showered upon him, taking far too long to reply and at that point his reply always seemed to be far less than adequate, he usually ended up being embarrassed.

"Oh, you wound me Youichi," Miyuki said dramatically, hand held over his heart in mock hurt.

"As if anything could damage your icy heart," Kuramochi said snickering as he stared up at Miyuki.

Those deep fire wood eyes bore into Miyuki's own, dull and unchanged by the stark neon lights that pierced the night. For a time, Miyuki had hated being drawn into the other like this, had hated the way the beating of his heart quickened simply at the sight of the other.

"That just means I'm stronger than most," Miyuki smiled, wheezing as Kuramochi elbowed him in the gut.

"You're awful," Kuramochi smiled back, teeth shining in the dancing light.

"You're the one that wanted to be my boyfriend," Miyuki shrugged, feeling kind of smug at that.

"I guess I've just got awful taste," Kuramochi replied, quirking a brow as they continued down the street and Miyuki continued to take each step gingerly.

"So you're the prize and I'm punching above my weight?" Miyuki asked, brows raised as he turned to look at Kuramochi for a moment before returning his focus back to the slick concrete.  Flecks of snow were melting in Kuramochi's gelled hair, making the styling softly come undone, Miyuki only caught sight of it for a few short seconds before he became fearful of the ground beneath him again.

"Absolutely," Kuramochi said, but he couldn't stomach the ego in that statement, "wow is this what it feels like to be you?" He asked, wincing in mock pain as he held his hand to his stomach.

"Now you know the pain I live with everyday," Miyuki said, trying his best to sound serious as he kept an attentive eye on the ground, but he could hardly hold it before he was wheezing laughter at the sound of his own voice as Kuramochi snickered beside him.

They fell silent for a while, leaving the neon lights and bustling streets behind them as they moved toward the quieter neighbourhoods, it was kind of startling how quickly the sounds of a city that never sleeps disappeared and turned into the sounds of the kind of residential neighbourhood where people got really good sleep. The snow still fell in soft sheets like someone powdering a cake, gently laying itself down upon the ground beneath them. A winter wonderland, the kind of scenery that would be a fitting backdrop to any romantic drama, Miyuki couldn't help but think they neither of them really fit in this kind of environment. They were made for spring and summer, sweating in the dirt, cutting up the grass with their cleats and kicking mud up into the air as their feet ate up the ground.

"You know, seriously, this is nice," Kuramochi said, staring forward as he squeezed Miyuki's hand lightly between them.

"Yeah, it is," Miyuki returned, face heating up as he felt the warmth spread out from his chest. It was irritating to be so affected by the words of one person, but Kuramochi was the most important person in his life and everything the other said with any amount of gravity meant the world to him.

It wasn't long until they reached Kuramochi's apartment, there was no question of whether Miyuki was coming in or not, Kuramochi dragged him inside and closed the door behind them. Peeling away their coats and gloves, they stood beside the window and watched the snow fall heavier outside, Kuramochi's hand folded over Miyuki's upon the windowsill. None of the lights were on and only an ethereal glow softly lit their faces from outside as they were finally able to look at each other without any boundaries, eyes caught on each other's as they inched closer together until they could feel their gentle breaths upon their lips.

The kiss was slow and soft, pressing their lips together, creating a growing warmth between them. Miyuki had the sappiest thought he'd ever had, he'd never speak it aloud, vowed to forever keep it locked in his mind, but he still felt it true that the love they shared between them was hot enough to melt the snow lining the streets of Tokyo.
