the winner takes it all

Summary:

Growing up Tzuyu had it all. Brains, looks, popularity, wealth and all the things everyone could honestly only dream of.

Work Text:

Growing up Tzuyu had it all. Brains, looks, popularity, wealth and all the things everyone could honestly only dream of.

But it wasn't like that at all. Not when even with all of that she still feels an empty space in her heart.

— —

As she went up stage to receive her award for being the Top one of the school she somehow still felt incomplete.

While Tzuyu stood there, confidently delivering her speech amidst the crowd, the front seat sat Sana.

Sana who was there for her for all the things she achieved, who watched her grow, who's been her bestest friend someone could ever ask for and the first person who believed in her, cheering the most loudly for Tzuyu.

But Tzuyu still felt uneasy. Because even though she's holding the trophy she worked so hard for, she was there holding Yuta's hands. While Sana was sitting there, so was her boyfriend besides her.

For such a special moment of joy, Tzuyu couldn't understand why she's feeling disappointed now. This was everything she's ever wanted, so why does it feel like she wasn't the winner at all.

— —

After the event, Sana approached her alone.

"What does it feel like to win?" She smiled at her.

"I didn't win at all." Tzuyu said with no emotion.

Obviously, Sana was confused with the cryptic message.

"What do you mean? Isn't this what you've always wanted?"

Tzuyu opened her mouth, but closed it again.

After a few seconds of hesitating she finally let out something.

"You don't know what I want." She says before walking away.

Even so, Sana still noticed the sadness in Tzuyu's eyes.

Sure, Tzuyu had days where she felt upset but this time it felt different, especially since Tzuyu had always been working hard to achieve this.

Sana stood there confused but at the same time she was determined to see her smile. She somehow wanted to figure out what would make Tzuyu more happier than being the top student.

Over the next few weeks, Sana made a list of things Tzuyu might want.

And so every time they both hang out, she tries to talk to Tzuyu about it.

"Tzuyu, I might have finally figured out what you want!" Sana says while sipping a milkshake at some café.

"Didn't you say you've always wanted to go to Disney instead of studying all the time?" Sana brought up, remembering her saying it during an exam week.

Tzuyu raised a brow at that.

"Well, you and I can go there next week since Yuta and I are free!"

"Yuta?" Tzuyu asked.

"Yeah, he's coming with us."

Tzuyu scoffed. "And be a third wheel? No thanks."

"Oh." Sana pouted at her.

Tzuyu then looked at her wristwatch. "Oh, I gotta go." she said flatly. "Have fun with your boyfriend." She forced a smile that Sana could always tell before walking away.

It really bothered her on how she didn't know what this thing that could make her happy was. She's known her since elementary days for god's sake so why can't she figure this out.

— —

And so she still continued to suggest or give Tzuyu things but all of them were unfortunately denied.

Frustrated, Sana decided to just talk to her about it.

When Sana's boyfriend threw a grand party, she forced Tzuyu to go there and told her that she wanted to talk about something.

It's been hours and she hasn't been seen anywhere, disappointed, Sana decided to just go into a corner table and just scroll aimlessly into her phone.

"Boo." Someone suddenly crept up behind her causing Sana to let out a yelp which was thankfully covered by the loud music in the background.

"Tzuyu!!" She furrowed her brows.

Tzuyu went closer to her face. "Should we talk outside? I can't hear anything with this goddamn music blasting in my ear." She whispered in Sana's ears.

Sana nodded as Tzuyu held her wrist lightly, leading her to a balcony with barely no one else around.

"So, what did you wanna say?"

"Just tell me what it is that you want." Sana crossed her arms, trying to look intimidating.

"You're still onto this?" Tzuyu let out a sigh.

Sana frowned.

"Look, it's honestly nothing you or anyone can do anything about so just stop it."

"Can you just talk to me, we've been friends for years, what's gotten into you now?" Sana says, clearly upset.

Tzuyu then suddenly went closer to her face.

"What are we?"

Sana opened your mouth to say something, but closed it again, clearly hesitating. She didn't even know what to answer since Tzuyu looked serious.

"We're best friends." Sana eventually mumbled, nervous about what she'll say next

"I've always wanted it to be more." Tzuyu mumbled quietly, enough for you to hear once, before turning her back on you. Eventually leaving you all alone as she went back inside.

"What the hell does that even mean?" Sana grumbled to herself underneath her breath.

"Does she not think of me as her best friend as well?"

A pause.

"..Oh."

Sana stood there frozen. Finally realizing what she meant.

She couldn't move, and the noise in the background was suddenly muffled.

Sana then finally realized that Tzuyu was right, that she couldn't do anything about it at all.

Because she can't reciprocate her feelings for her, not when she loves someone already.
