A fragmented Memory

Summary:

It's 1965, Lyall Lupin's son was just horrifically attacked by Fenir Greyback. All because of some article he wrote about werewolves, he regrets writing that now but Remus wasn't the only member of Lyall's family that's in danger.

Lyall did the most insane thing any father could do to keep their children safe, he sent her to live with her muggle aunt's family.

Notes:

This fic will be exactly as the title says, from many POVs.

I'll try to update as much as I can but I'm not great with extended fics, as you'll probably see from my other abandoned fanfics that are on my page.

Chapter 1: The first memory

Chapter Text

July, 1965

Lyall was distraught, his son was attacked by Fenir Greyback. Punishment apparently. He was angry about the article, Lyall should've never written it, never got it published. Hope was slightly confused by the whole situation, she questioned her husband for 2 hours as he sat in complete silence. None of these questions Lyall can remember all that well, he remembered the atmosphere of their home though, harsh, cold, suffocating. Lyall's worst fear had happened and it was his own fault, his son became what he feared the most. Everything was his fault, if he just kept his thoughts to himself then they'd never have to deal with this, never have to deal with the horrors that came with his disease. Lyall knew nothing about how to deal with raising a werewolf but he wouldn't allow Greyback the opportunity to take Lyall's child as his own. The questions came in one ear and out the other as if they were never uttered at all, this was all because Lyall was too preoccupied on his 4 year old daughter, who sat on the floor, entirely oblivious to the situation around her.

He watched as she sat there with a stuffed animal clutched to her chest, her hair a mess of tangled, dirty blonde locks. She was exhausted, obviously, having been woken up from a deep sleep but she couldn't fall back into a restful slumber, her body wouldn't allow her to. Lyall knew this all too well, having to deal with the girl waking him and Hope up at stupid hours in the morning because her body physically couldn't fall back asleep. He had watched her bounce up from her place on the cool, wooden floor and wander around with no knowledge as to where she's going.

He questioned what to do, terrified that Greyback would get her too. He knew it was only a matter of time before she'd be in danger of either another werewolf or even Remus himself. Watching as the small girl bounced around, pitter-pattering all around the small room, Lyall got an idea. It was reckless, impulsive, not even thought about properly. The implications this would have on not only him but his daughter, herself were drastic but he was desperate, a desperate father, trying to figure out the best course of action for his family and these were desperate times. Desperate times called for desperate measures.

He thought about how to do this for quite a while, sat in deafening silence all the while. He knew he could never bring this up to Hope and his son shouldn't be involved whatsoever, he'd have to complete this on his own. He knew spells, he could plan, he would just need the right time to do so and it all started with Hope's older sister.

The next day came by as quick as it could, all 4 of them were at home and Remus was doing worse for wear. Lyall and Hope needed to talk about what they should do to help Remus, whilst keeping his sister safe. The little girl was getting too curious for her own good, questioning why her older brother couldn't play with her and pouting whenever she was taken away from the room. She was a happy child most of the time but these past few hours, she's been on the verge of a tantrum and started arguing with her mother about why she couldn't see 'Remmy'. Hope was losing patience with the small girl and it was clear to see.

"We should give her to your sister to watch over for a couple of days." Lyall started, once the two were alone.

Hope briefly looked over to her husband before speaking, "that's probably best, she's starting to get too curious and Remus needs his rest."

"We still have enough time today to take her over, I'll do it to save you the hassle." Lyall offered, his plan already in motion.

Hope, being an absolutely shattered mother, agreed without much thought. Her focus constantly off as she tried to calm down, Lyall was relieved about this, he would be able to take care of this step easily. All he needed to find was his wand.

The next few hours were lost in Lyall's memory. These bits weren't that important to him after all.

Arriving at home, a couple minutes later, he spotted his wife passed out on the sofa in their living room. This part would be the hardest for him, but it was essential. He raised his wand and silently muttered, "obliviate". The guilt immediately washing over him as all memories of Lyall and Hope Lupin's second child were removed from her memory, every smile, every joke, every silly action, gone from it. He watched as Hope's body slightly relaxed, the stress of their daughter's insistence gone from her body. Lyall tried to push way the guilt, the regret and the horror he felt doing this. He felt awful but it had to be done, "father's make hard choices," he had muttered to himself as he silently made his way up to Remus' room. This bit would probably be the hardest thing he's ever done.

Lyall stood over his son's bed, questioning whether or not he should do this, if this was the right call. Unlike Hope, her sister, and her sister's family, all Remus knew about his life so far was his younger sister, all his memories had her in them. He felt awful for this, his mind a scattered mess of thought and feelings, regret and guilt, no sane father should do this to his child but he felt like he had no choice. The choice was one he would make, it was the best choice for his family, for his children, for his daughter, for anyone with any sort of understanding of them. Lyall felt a sea of dread wash over him as he slowly held up his wand, pointing it at his sleeping son. It took a lot longer for Lyall Lupin to say the incantation this time, knowing from then on, he would be the only one to know about her. He knew it was what should happen though, he knew this was the only way to keep what was left of his children safe. All he needed to do was say the word...

Eventually, he did. He watched as his son's body relaxed in same manner as Hope's had done a few minutes prior, every memory removed, every smile, laugh, hug, petty argument, and conversation gone. This was it, he did what he had to but why didn't he feel better?

The next few hours in his memory were filled with destroying every picture and item containing or belonging to his daughter, it was difficult to do, Lyall wanted to give up time and time again but he persisted, not keeping a single thing about her. Once everything was destroyed, he sat down in the sparsely furnished room.

Morticia Hope Lupin was gone from the house. Gone from the memories. Gone from the family. Removed.
