Work Text:
I, am a fan. (JUNE 1st 2017)
I am a fan bought by college students attempting to beat the heat, or a high school dropout looking for the cheapest option that will allow them to cool off in the blazing Georgia heat. In fact, I belong to the second option, I think. It was just a few weeks ago I awoke (plugged in) and saw a dark, lonely apartment. A dusty rug, a forest green couch with stains of who knows what, a TV that looks like it came from goodwill on a wooden stand already warping, and then there's him. He sits on that couch for hours on end and my rotor keeps him what I hope to be cool enough while he watches endless episodes of true crime deep dives eating ramen or white rice, occasionally he'll have fast food, a rare sight. Judging by his uniform he works in some supermarket, he throws it on the side of the couch he never occupies and puts it on the next day, and I still have yet to see him wash it. That's my life, I sit in one spot either working to cool off this guy with seemingly no social life or I just sit, I sit there in the dark only accompanied by the noisy pipes or occasional loud tv from the occupants above. It is a lonely life but it's the life I've got.

I didn't question any of it until a couple of days ago, why can I see? Why can I think? I'm a fan, a supposed inanimate object, I'm meant to have no life behind me. I have no eyes to see from yet I get a glimpse of his entire apartment as I oscillate back and forth for hours until he decides he's cooled off enough to switch me off until he gets home from work the next day. Am I the only sentient fan? The only sentient electrical device? How many other objects in this man's house have a conscious like I do? It's not like I can move, I can't even speak. How am I writing this? Well, the guy who lives here uses the same electrical outlet to plug in me and his laptop. I found a way to write in Google Docs whatever I think, when I am done with my documentation I will upload this to whatever I can.

I was unplugged for the first time.
He unplugged me for I think a day. He unplugged me before heading out to work and it hurt, I felt pain. I, a fan, a thing of plastic and metal, felt pain. Why do I feel pain if I have no necessity to reproduce or any sort of contribution to the food chain? Other than that, I found access to Google, it’s like staring at a screen if it were all I could see. I can only access applications on his computer if he's actively charging it, which is often. He plugs in his laptop before heading to leave for work and unplugs it after he gets home, allowing me all day to browse websites, watch videos and learn. I haven't found a single thing of fan's, or any other electronics being sentient like I am, maybe I'm special?
(JUNE 10th 2017)
I can access the computer while he's using it as long as it's plugged in. I can speak to him through opening a Google tab and writing out sentences as I am now. I'll attempt contact next time he opens his laptop while charging it. I could chat with him, I could learn his name, I could learn his story, he could name me? Or I could even name myself! I'll start by introducing myself and explaining what's happening.

"Hello, human!" Those were the words that started his spiral into madness. I spoke to him, but instead of a nice conversation I was hoping to enjoy, he thought he had gone insane and hung himself. In thinking he had gone insane had he actually gone insane? Must be.
"Hello, human!" - Cam (the fan)
"What the hell?" - Cypruss
"Don't fear, I'm not malware! I'm your fan, the one across from your couch!" - Cam
"You're not my fucking fan, how'd you hack my laptop?" - Cypruss
"Not hack, no. I am your fan! How I have sentience has me wondering too. Call me Cam! I found it on a list of human names." - Cam
"Okay. If you really are my fan then how are you typing on my laptop, you're two separate electronics." - Cypruss
"I just can! I was hoping you could tell me about your life?" - Cam
"Tell you about my life? I'm going crazy.. I knew it, I knew I had gone crazy that day I just never saw the signs yet I am now." - Cypruss
"Where are you going?" - Cam
"What's that rope for?" - Cam
"I don't think that's safe for humans, you should get down and chat!" - Cam

He never acknowledged my pleas. Now I'm here watching men take stuff out of his apartment, clearing it for the next tenant. They speak of scrapping me, so this is my final entry. I still have so many questions but not the time to answer them. I'm going to die? I'm going to die. I'll die because I chose to try and reach out to the only other living thing I could. Why am I sentient? How is a fan sentient. Are other fans sentient? I'll never know. They are on their way to unplug me as I write. Cam, my na-
