The Inbetween

Summary:

Max lives in the InBetween with The Jester.

It’s not the worst if she’s honest.

(sequel to Max & The Jester)

Notes:

My firm belief that they’re chill.

Work Text:

Leaving her old life behind to follow the Jester to his realm since they shared a fate was weird.

The inbetween was weirder.

At least that's what she called it. It wasn't quite the separate realm of myths and spirits, nor was it anything like the, well, human realm she formerly lived in she supposed.

It was a strange Inbetween place that she now lived in with the Jester.

According to the Jester, they didn't belong in either realm since “they lost their humanity but weren't born with the fae’s insanity.

So it was less strain on their energy to remain in the Inbetween.

One thing she recently learned was that they could mess with both of those realms respectively.

The Jester took great joy in teaching her about that. While it wasn't the murder and showmanship he quite enjoyed, it was quite easy to prank humans from the Inbetween.

Wandering closer to their realm meant you could interact with the world without being in it.

He showed her how to push a book out of place and make windows rattle easily. Snagging clothes on a person took significantly more effort but it was still fun.

She wasn't stupid though. She knew he used those same tricks to do more harm than simple pranks even in the Inbetween. He was just trying to ease her into it she supposed.

He snagged people and tripped them on stairs and by rotted rails making them fall and cry in pain. Twisted valves that released gas that poisoned people without them knowing. He was a being that took pleasure in other beings' misfortune. He loved tricks.

If there was one thing that harmed no one and passed time quickly it was learning tricks. The Jester knew many different ways to trick a human and with some greater difficulty a fae.

It was fun learning some of them.

The strangest part might have been the way her own body was changing. Little white marks like porcelain were covering her wrists more and more every time she did a card trick.

According to Jester her body was adapting to the Inbetween, and their shared fate meant some shared characteristics. She supposed it could be worse, her face could've ended up like his.

She joked about that to him and he was huffy about it. He wouldn't show her any newer tricks for a week.

He also tended to disappear and reappear a lot. Sometimes randomly, sometimes she’d watch him go off with another denizen of the Inbetween.

It was a weird life.

~~~~~~~~~~~
He supposed he lived with the kid now.
He'd have to teach her all the little tricks of the realms. A confusing place it was. At the least, she seemed thankful for his tutelage, lord knows he fumbled about when he first arrived.
Of course, he kept some tricks for himself, for some, it'd be much funnier to watch the little magician discover them herself. For others, he simply didn't want to know what mayhem the kid could cause just yet in case he was unprepared for the headache of what she could do.
After all, who lets a teenager know that anything they think up can appear if they try hard enough? Honestly, he loved mischief but that sounded like a pain in the neck.
It was fun teaching the kid how to mess with those in the mortal realm through the veil.
Despite the audacity of the kid insulting his face, honestly, he's prime looker material.
The biggest thing was remembering that he had the kid. In his defense, he's been aloneish for millennia by now.
So leaving his technical home to meet with other deal-havers and gore enjoyers was a regular pastime for him.
He'd have to check if any of them had entities that would get along with his kid. They’re suppose socialize during this age or something.
Plus it’d be good for her to practice catching an audience for next Halloween. He doesn't know how the kid will look by the end of her transformation, so learning how to draw in people now would be better than later.
Through the veil, he pushed a teen exploring a haunted house down the stairs. Oh, what a tumble that one had, a broken neck and a bashed skull bleeding out. No screams but what a nice image.
Truly, he'll have to make plans for raising his new kid.
Notes:
I chose to believe that there are other beings like them.
