Chapter 1: Prologue: The Princess Summit

Chapter Text

Many Moons Ago

It was a quiet midnight in Canterlot, the city cast in deep blue shadows beneath a cold autumn moon. The peaceful silence shattered as Princess Celestia burst through the heavy doors of the castle library. Her mane whipping wildly and her eyes scanning every alcove, curtain, and pillar with a level of intensity usually reserved for diplomatic crises.

"I know you are in here," Celestia announced, her voice echoing off the high stone ceiling with grave, royal authority. "There is nowhere left to run. Yield yourself at once!"

Silence hung heavily over the room until Celestia heard a noise from behind a bookshelf at the back of the room. A smirk formed under her muzzle as she made her way to the end of the room. She quietly approached the shelf. With a quick look behind it, she was sure she'd find her target. However, the space was completely empty.

Celestia blinked in genuine surprise, dropping her serious posture. Suddenly, a soft, high-pitched giggle echoed from directly above her head.

Celestia looked up and let out a warm laugh. Floating upside down in a clumsy, flickering aura of red magic was a tiny, bright orange unicorn filly with a messy red-and-yellow mane. The toddler was proudly levitating herself in the air, her little hooves kicking happily.

"There you are!" Celestia chuckled, her voice softening from royal command to a maternal warmth.

The filly, however, was reaching the limit of her concentration. The red aura around her began to flicker violently until disappearing entirely, dropping straight into Celestia’s flowing, ethereal mane.

The filly rolled over and over through the magical, shifting strands before finally tumbling out onto the floor. As she came to a stop on her back, her big eyes were spinning in dizzy, hypnotic spirals that perfectly matched the brilliant pink, teal, and blue shades of Celestia's own mane.

Celestia let out a soft gasp, instantly lowering her head to gently nudge the tiny filly with her muzzle. "Are you alright?"

The filly blinked away the colorful spirals, her big, cyan eyes widening as she looked up. She gave her head a vigorous shake, tossing her messy red-and-yellow mane out of her face. Far from being frightened, she let out a delighted, bubbly coo and reached her tiny hooves up to hug the alicorn's nose.

Celestia stared at the toddler in genuine awe. The young pony was barely old enough to talk, yet she had just successfully levitated her own body weight. Such a feat required a level of raw magical instinct that most unicorns struggled to achieve even after years of formal schooling at the academy.

"That was quite an impressive show of magic, my little pony," Celestia whispered, a wave of immense pride warming her chest.

With a tender smile, the princess leaned closer and nuzzled the filly's cheek. The filly let out a contented sigh. Wrapped in the comforting warmth of Celestia’s magic, the toddler drifted into a deep sleep, her small head resting securely against the Princess's shoulder.

"You truly are gifted," Celestia whispered as she carried the sleeping filly out of the library. "Once you've learned to channel that gift, I know you will grow to do truly great things."

The warmth of the memory slowly dissolved, bleeding away into the cold, quiet reality of the present day.

Princess Celestia stood alone in a secluded chamber of the Canterlot castle, the silence of the room heavy and suffocating. Her eyes were fixed on the polished, shimmering surface of a mirror. It stood inert, its surface reflecting only her own tired expression and the faint, ethereal glow of her mane.

The heavy silence of the chamber fractured as a sharp, rhythmic knock rattled the thick oak doors, accompanied by a tense voice calling out from the corridor.

"Princess Celestia? Your Highness, are you in there?"

Celestia quickly withdrew her hoof from the mirror, her heart skipping a beat. She cleared her throat, smoothing her posture into her usual regal poise before turning toward the entrance.

"Speak," she called out, keeping her voice steady.

The muffled voice of the royal guard carried clearly through the heavy wood. "Apologies for interrupting your solitude, Your Highness. We have just received word from the outer watchtower. Princess Twilight Sparkle and her friends are approaching the station. Their train is almost here!"

She looked back at the mirror, her eyes wide with sudden realization. For the past week, her mind had been so completely consumed by administrative tasks and royal duties that she had lost track of the days entirely. She had completely forgotten today was the arrival.

"They're arriving today!" Celestia whispered to herself, the color draining from her face.

Meanwhile, the steady, rhythmic clack-clack-clack of the train tracks echoed through the luxury passenger car as the Friendship Express wound its way up the steep cliffs toward Canterlot. Inside the cabin, Twilight Sparkle and her friends Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy, Rarity, Applejack, and Spike were awaiting their arrival to Canterlot.

Applejack leaned forward, adjusting her Stetson with a wide smile. "Hoo-wee! Your very first princess summit. You must be over the moon, Twilight."

"Oh, I am excited," Twilight admitted, stopping her pacing to look at her friends. "But, to be honest, I'm a little nervous, too."

Pinkie Pie suddenly popped her head upside down from the luggage rack above, her eyes wide. "You're 'nervicited'! It's like you wanna jump up and down and yell 'Yay me!'" She dropped down from the rack, instantly collapsing her entire body into a perfectly round, tight pink ball on the cabin floor. "But you also wanna curl up in a teeny-tiny ball and hide at the same time!"

With a series of crisp, rhythmic clink-clank-whir mechanical sound effects echoing from nowhere, Pinkie snapped her limbs back out in a dizzying, multi-jointed sequence, unfolding herself like a complex transforming robot. She popped back up to her hooves and beamed at Twilight. "We've all been there!"

"I'm there almost every day," Fluttershy murmured softly from her corner seat, shrinking back slightly.

"You've got no reason to fret, Twi," Applejack reassured her, waving a dismissive hoof. "Everything's gonna be just–"

"Twilight!" Rarity lunged forward across the cabin floor, instantly getting right in Twilight’s face, her eyes wide with theatrical shock as she gasped. "Oh, sorry, darling, but I just realized you're not wearing your crown. You haven't forgotten it back in Ponyville, have you?"

Twilight instinctively leaned back, startled by Rarity's sudden closeness. "It's in my bag," she quickly explained, gesturing toward her luggage. "Just feel a little self-conscious about wearing it. Haven't really gotten accustomed to these yet, either." She flared her wings slightly, looking uneasy with the extra limbs.

Rarity backed away slightly but kept her dramatic posture, tapping her cheek thoughtfully. "You are a princess now, Twilight. Embrace it! I'm telling you, if I had a crown like that, I would never take it off. Why, I'd sleep in the thing."

Twilight playfully rolled her eyes and dismissed Rarity's statement. But she knew Rarity was right about one thing. Eventually, she was going to have to embrace the fact that she's a full-on alicorn princess. Too bad that's easier said than done, though.

The polished marble clicked sharply beneath Celestia's hooves as she and Captain Iron Shield hurried toward the throne room. A thick ledger floated between them, its pages flipping as Iron Shield kept pace with her urgent strides.

"We’ve finalized the upper-tier patrols, Your Highness," Captain Iron Shield reported. "The ministers are settled, the royals of the Crystal Empire have arrived, Shining Armor even agreed overseeing the security detail. For the opening ceremonies, do you want to address the assembly before or after we present Princess Twilight with the registry scrolls?"

"The latter is fine, Iron Shield," Celestia replied automatically.

In reality, she wasn't listening. Her posture was perfectly regal, but her mind was a chaotic blur. Then, a cold realization hit her so hard she almost stumbled.

With her schedule packed and the palace under tight security, she wouldn't be able to slip away. She had been so distracted lately that she had completely lost track of the days. Now, she might miss the exact moment she's been spending many long moons secretly waiting for.

"Princess?" Iron Shield paused outside the throne room doors, noticing her hesitation. "Is everything alright?"

Celestia quickly smoothed her expression into a warm smile. "Forgive me. I was simply reflecting on how much today means for Equestria."

She glanced back toward the distant hallway leading to her private study. If at any point she couldn't watch the mirror herself, she needed backup.

"Tell me," Celestia said, keeping her tone casual. "Are there any extra guards on standby? I require a permanent guard posted outside the private chamber I just departed."

Iron Shield let out an exhausted sigh. "I'm afraid not, Your Highness. After the disaster at the royal wedding with the changelings, we couldn't take any chances. Every single uniform is already deployed to the perimeter, the courtyard, or the grand hall. We are completely stretched thin today, making absolutely sure nothing goes wrong this time. All at... uh, your request, Your Highness."

Celestia’s smile wavered for a split second. Desperation clawed at her chest. "Are you absolutely certain? Surely there is even one guard we can spare for a few hours?"

Iron Shield shifted his weight, looking highly uncomfortable. He rubbed the back of his neck, his ears pinning back slightly as he let out a sharp, groaning sigh. "Well... technically, there is one," he admitted begrudgingly. "But trust me, Your Highness, you do not want him on security duty today. He's... quite inexperienced, to say the least."

"Anypony will do," Celestia declared with newfound hope.

"Very well, Your Highness," the stallion replied nervously. "I'll go fetch him now."

Captain Iron Shield excused himself and marched down a connecting corridor to find the rookie recruit. Left alone for a brief moment, Celestia waited by the heavy throne room doors.

Later, the stallion returned. With another stallion right behind him.

A young, orange-coated pegasus guard turned the corner and marched into view, following just a step behind Iron Shield. With his deep blue mane perfectly groomed, his golden royal crest shining under the palace lights, and his wings pressed squarely against his sides, he looked like a textbook example of Canterlot’s finest elite. His stern, focused gaze was locked directly ahead as he executed a crisp, confident stride toward them.

Just as the young pegasus arrived directly in front of them, he attempted a sharp, theatrical parade stop to salute his sovereigns. Instead, his back hoof caught the edge of his own golden greave.

With a sudden, undignified gasp, his front legs tangled entirely. The impressive guard pitched straight forward, transforming into a sprawling blur of orange and gold. He crashed headfirst into the polished marble, sliding forward and collapsing in a loud, clattering heap right at Princess Celestia's hooves.

The pegasus groaned, shaking his head as his wings flared out sideways in a messy pile. He quickly pinned his ears back, his face flushing a bright, embarrassed red as he looked up at the solar princess.

"Private Flash Sentry reporting for duty, Your Highness!" he squeaked, saluting frantically with a hoof while still flat on his stomach.

Celestia blinked down at the sprawling pegasus, offering a gentle, reassuring smile. Given the lack of options, a clumsy guard was vastly better than no guard at all.

"You will do nicely, Private Sentry," Celestia agreed, offering a reassuring smile before stepping past him and walking ahead down the corridor. "Please, stand and join us."

Hearing her approval, Flash scrambled frantically to his hooves and hurried a few steps forward to follow behind the alicorn.

However, watching the solar deity stride majestically down the hall seemed to break whatever professional restraint he had left. Flash leaned in close to Captain Iron Shield, his eyes turning into literal stars as an ecstatic whisper burst from his throat.

"I can't believe I'm actually meeting her!" Flash gushed, his wings flapping nervously against his sides. "Princess Celestia! The pony who defeated Nightmare Moon and Discord the first time!"

Iron Shield didn't break his stride, but he shot Flash a sharp, stern glare from beneath his helmet.

"Private Sentry, stay professional," Iron Shield hissed under his breath, his voice dripping with second-hand embarrassment. "We are in the presence of royalty, and you are representing the Canterlot Elite. Keep your composure, especially with Princess Twilight Sparkle and her friends arriving any minute now."

Instead of calming down, Flash’s eyes went even wider, a fresh wave of fanboy excitement completely overtaking him. He practically bounced on his hooves as they walked.

"Wait, Princess Twilight and her friends are coming here too?!" Flash gasped. "The ones who defeated Nightmare Moon and Discord the second time!"

Captain Iron Shield stopped dead in his tracks and fixed Flash with a look of pure, unadulterated steel from beneath the rim of his helmet. The silence between them stretched for a tense, agonizing second, the senior officer's stern expression radiating enough disciplinary energy to halt a charging manticore.

Flash snapped to full attention. "I mean, Sir, yes Sir!" Flash whispered back urgently, his voice steadying. "I understand, sir. I am deeply sorry for the outburst. I promise I will not mess this opportunity up. You can count on me."

Iron Shield gave one final, slow nod of warning before turning back around to catch up with their sovereign.

A few quiet moments passed, the heavy silence of the corridor offering a brief, tense breathing room as Celestia started to panic inside. She needed to hurry back. Then, the heavy, gilded double doors of the throne room swung inward with a majestic groan.

Framed by the grand stone archway, Twilight Sparkle and her friends stepped across the threshold, their hoofsteps clicking softly against the pristine marble. Twilight led the group, her posture rigid as she carefully balanced her heavy crown. Behind her walked Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy, Rarity, Applejack, and Spike, all looking around the massive, sunlit hall in absolute amazement.

As they moved further into the room, a sudden, booming fanfare shattered the quiet atmosphere. Two rows of three royal guards on either side of the carpet raised long golden horns to their lips, blowing a loud, piercing sequence of notes to signal the visitor's arrival.

The unexpected blast of brass echoed like thunder through the room. Flash Sentry, who had been trying desperately to look like a disciplined statue, flinched violently at the sound. Caught completely off guard, his front hooves tangled together yet again, and he stumbled blindly forward a few steps into the path of the visitors.

At that exact moment, Twilight had her eyes cast upward, admiring the massive windows. She didn't see the orange pegasus tumbling forward until it was too late. With a sharp gasp, Twilight ran right into him, the sudden impact throwing them both off balance.

The quiet dignity of the welcoming vanished in an instant as Flash scrambled backward, his armor clattering loudly. His face flushed a bright, burning crimson as he looked down at Twilight in absolute horror.

"I am so, so incredibly sorry, Your Highness!" Flash stammered frantically, his wings flaring out sideways as he bowed so low his nose nearly scraped the marble. "I didn't mean to—the horns were just so loud, and I lost my balance, and I—"

"Private Sentry!" Iron Shield stepped forward, his booming voice cutting through the rookie’s panicked rambling like a blade.

Iron Shield didn't even look at Flash, but his glare was sharp enough to cut glass. He shoved his way past the bumbling pegasus, positioning himself with rigid military discipline at the front of the carpet. He cleared his throat, raised his head high, and projected his voice to the entire hall to get the day back on track.

"Her Highness, Princess Twilight Sparkle!" Iron Shield announced.

Flash immediately clamped his muzzle shut, pulling his wings tight against his sides. Up ahead at the base of the thrones, Princess Celestia, Princess Luna, and Princess Cadance stood awaiting their arrival.

Princess Cadance beam at the sight of her sister-in-law. Stepping down from the dais with a wide, joyful smile.

"Twilight!" Cadance laughed, giving her a brief nuzzle. "I haven't seen you since the coronation!"

"It's so good to see you too," Twilight beamed, relaxing slightly.

Before anyone else could speak, Celestia abruptly stepped forward. Her expression was pleasant, but internally she was panicking. The clock was ticking, and she desperately needed to get back to her study.

"We have so much to discuss," Celestia announced, her voice slightly rushed. "But it can wait until tomorrow. You all look tired from your journey. Now, off to bed, all of you."

A heavy, utterly baffled silence fell over the room.

Twilight blinked in surprise, while Applejack and Rainbow Dash exchanged an incredulous look. Even Princess Luna and Cadance turned their heads to stare at Celestia in complete bewilderment. Outside the high windows, the sun was still blazing brightly in the middle of the sky.

"Uh... Princess Celestia?" Twilight stammered, gesturing awkwardly to her friends. "We just got here. And I was hoping we could discuss how the princess summit is going to..."

"Well, you know what they say. Early to bed, early to rise!" Celestia declared quickly, offering a tight, dismissive smile before turning on her hooves to march back out of the room. She glanced back just enough to catch the eye of the rookie pegasus. "Flash Sentry, follow me."

Flash blinked in surprise but quickly scrambled to follow behind the solar princess, leaving the rest of the room standing in stunned silence.

Princess Luna and Cadance slowly turned their heads to share a long, deeply concerned look. Luna raised an eyebrow, her gaze shifting from the heavy double doors Celestia had just vanished through back to the stunned, silent group of ponies standing on the carpet.

Recognizing that something was clearly amiss with her sister, Luna stepped down from the royal dais, her dark, starry mane flowing gracefully behind her.

"I shall go talk to her," Luna stated firmly, her regal voice cutting through the awkward tension of the room. She offered Twilight and her friends a reassuring nod. "Please, make yourselves comfortable. We shall return shortly."

With a swift, purposeful stride, Luna marched out of the throne room, leaving Cadance to tend to the highly confused visitors.
