Chapter Text
It was fall once again- and after a summer of sleepovers at the weasleys, sneaking out with Cedric, and nights hunting with my werewolf father- I had found myself once again on the Hogwarts express. I had to admit to myself that I loved these journeys.. Despite the travel sickness and overwhelming sweet smell that Ron would gather in our carriage. The journey gave me a chance to breathe, to admire the change of the leaves and the smell of rain in the air, to prepare myself for the first term of 5th year, and best of all, to gossip with my friends.
“I heard you and Cedric had a good night at the moon festival-” Hermione teases, nudging me on my arm and snapping me out of my summer day dreams. The girl’s brown hair was frizzier than ever and she was shovelling chocolate toads into her mouth, Ron’s influence on her was clear.
I laugh and blush slightly, looking away, “Yeah it was.. He was so sweet the whole summer,” I can’t help the grin that forms on my face as I speak about my boyfriend, Cedric and I had been going out for almost 6 months now since he’d asked me out to the cotillion, the two of us had been practically inseparable since.
“But the moon festival y/n! Tell us what happened!!” She was practically sweating with excitement and I laughed along with her, Hermione always did love living her romances though me.
“Did you shag??” Ron asks, struggling to keep his new pet rat in one place.
“Ron Weasley!!” Hermione snaps at him and chucks a candy cane at him which sticks to his ginger hair. He lets out a loud groan and tries to untangle it, Harry laughing in his face.
“Ron you can’t just ask her if they shagged- that’s like chivalry 101.” Harry says, not without adding, “But did you?”
“No!! He just took me out for dinner and then gave me this bracelet..” I held out my wrist, a silver chain dangling from it, it had a wolf charm attached along with one yellow crystal and a blue one too. Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw. Cedric and Y/n.
“And tell them the best bit..” Hermione quietly pleads to me, nodding enthusiastically, I roll my eyes.
“Well he–”
“I got the metal blessed with an unbreakable vow of love- one that can only be broken by death. And boy does it look fantastic on you.” I look up quickly to see who interrupted me, only to turn beat red when I see the very boy we’d all been talking about standing at the entrance of our carriage- leaning against the doorframe. His face was as perfect as ever, framed with his soft brown hair and his classic smile plastered on his dimpled cheeks.
“Cedric– Hi..” My face felt hot with embarrassment but still I couldn’t resist the smile he always pulls out of me. Ron and Harry snorted at each other but I ignored it entirely, they didn’t matter.. He did.
“Hey y/n.. thought I heard someone talking about me- figured it’d be you.” He hadn’t meant it in a cocky way, it was true, I was always talking about him, and him me.
“We were just talking about summer–” I tried to act like I wasn’t just drooling over the bracelet he’d gotten me.
“We can go check the sweet carriage if you guys wanna be alone!” Hermione suggests, not wanting to be caught in the middle of our reunion.
“No need- I was just popping in to say hi and-” He leans down to me and starts to kiss me, I immediately melt my lips against his and I feel his lips curve to a smile against my tongue, Ron lets out a cough and Cedric pulls away, a smirk on his face “ and to do that– I’ll see you guys later at the sorting ceremony right?” He stands back at the door now, talking to all 4 of us though it’s only me that answers.
“Yeah but we’re gonna take a trip to Hogsmeade tomorrow if you want to come?” I ask, giving him a pleading smile which he laughs slightly at.
“Yeah sure.. I’ll meet you guys in Diagon Alley?” He shrugs his backpack back onto his shoulder and I nod, “Cool-” He turns his attention back to the group, “Bye guys, bye pretty.. Good luck on your speech.” I smile and wave.
The second he’s gone Ron and Harry let out annoyed groans. “Are we gonna have to deal with you two eye fucking eachother all year?” Ron grumbles as Cheddars climbs over his head, licking at the candy cane still stuck in his hair.
“Are you gonna keep talking about sex the whole year?” I dig back at him, leaning over and tugging the candy cane sharply out his hair, causing him to shriek like a little girl and rub the new bald spot.
“Jeez sorry mom..” He gives me a dirty look.
Harry laughs and looks over at me, “What speech do you need luck on? I didn’t know you were making a speech.” He asks curiously.
I look away from Ron's struggle to Harry and shrug, “I decided to try out for the prefect of Ravenclaw.. I got a letter saying I’d been accepted at the end of last school year. So now I need to perform some speech in the sorting ceremony tonight.” I try to sound as nonchalant about it as I can, as if I hadn’t been stressing about it the whole 6 weeks of summer. “Don’t tell me the chosen one forgot about his friend's great achievement,” I tease.
“Hey! I was kinda busy last school year- what with saving the whole campus from a raging swarm of death eaters!” He shouts back defensively. I practically shiver at the mention of the death eaters, the events of last year still fresh in my brain: the screams, the blood, the darkness. I swore to myself if there were any that appeared this year I’d kill them with my bare hands.
“Do you still want me to read through it for you?” Hermione asks, clearly sensing I was stuck in the trauma of last year, I quickly shake myself out of my depressed state and nod.
“Oh right- yeah that would be great. Thanks Mione!” I reach for my Jansport backpack that was under my seat and rummage through all the new school papers, pens, junkfood, and socks to grab the speech. I pass it over to her and watch as she starts to scan it.
For the rest of the train ride, Hermione and I sat going over the words over and over again, trying to blend together a mixture of academic and street language, making sure I didn’t sound like a total idiot tonight. Meanwhile Harry is sat trying to reassure Ron that his bald spot wasn’t that visible, considering both his hair and skin were the same colour after his nasty sunburn in the summer.
