Pearl hissed as Scar disinfected the gashes crossing her eye. A small, vindictive part of her felt a bit happy. Scott was also feeling this pain.
"I'm all done!" Scar said as he re-bandaged her eye.
Pearl smiled at him, but the smile quickly turned watery. The thought of her soulmate was too much to bear.
"Ow! Ow, ow, ow!" she said as the salty tears stung the gashes. She blinked them back as best as she could.
"How much does it hurt? I can get you something to numb the pain," Scar said, brows furrowed in concern.
"Ah, no, it's not that bad, the tears just made it sting."
"What do you mean 'it's not that bad?' You were crying."
"I wasn't crying from pain," a pause, then Pearl quietly said, "Well, not from physical pain."
Scar nodded and said, "I might have something to help with the other kind of pain, as well."
Scar led Pearl up the road to the mountain pass. Then, he veered off the main road and took an overgrown path up one of the mountains. After walking for a while, Scar stopped on a ledge. It overlooked the village in the distance. The witch's tower was poking out of the forest below. The sun had just set; a sliver of pale blue was visible on the horizon. The rest of the sky was dark, sprinkled with stars.
"I used to come up here when I was angry with my soulmate," Scar said. He walked a little further up and stopped in front of a snowdrift.
“I’d lie down in the snow like this,” Scar said as he lowered himself onto his back, sinking into the snowdrift.
Pearl laid down beside him in the snow and looked up at the starry sky. The snow began to soak through her cloak. She shivered. Her hands started to grow numb. It was unpleasant. She wanted it to get worse. She wanted it to hurt. Then Scott would feel it.
“What’s your soulmate like?” Pearl asked.
“He’s the funniest person I’ve ever met. Whatever joke I made, he’d go along with it and make it even better," Scar replied with a smile in his voice, "I’ve never clicked with anyone as well as with him. Sometimes, all it would take was just looking at each other and we’d burst out laughing. He’s my favorite person.”
“How come I’ve never seen him before? Where is he?”
“He’s with his favorite person,” Scar said. He no longer sounded like he was smiling.
