Chapter Text
Context from season one:
Y/N found out about el but was sworn to secrecy by the boys, they didn’t care for drama so it didn’t bother them. They stayed out of trouble at school and overall just didn’t get involved with anything.
That was until Max Mayfield came along
The first time you heard about Max was at the palace arcade. Unlike the “Party” Keith liked you. Though never quite knew how to address you, and it kinda annoyed him, he can’t tell if you're a boy or a girl (no-one truly knows unless they know you which is close to no one) so he can’t ship you with anyone. You would prefer to keep it that way.
you never cared for dig dug, more for the racing, high speed, or shooter games. But no one, no one, had ever beat Dustin’s high score on Dig Dug. Ever. So you wonder who is “MADMAX”
Well you got your answer the next day at school. During science Mr. Clark introduced a new student.
“Please welcome Maxine, she just moved here from California”
“It’s max” she states before she goes to find a seat. Lucas and Dustin both smile at her, clearly interested, trying to get her to sit down near them. She ignores them and plops down in the seat next to you.
“Hey what’s your name?” She asks. Usually people don’t actually care, more often or not they ask for your name to figure out your gender. Though y/n is not gender specific so they get annoyed and never get their answer. You felt as though this was one of the rare occasions that someone actually cared.
“Y/n” the way she looked at you, how your bangs went past your eyebrows, covering half your eyes with h/c. How your backpack was years old held together with safety pins, rough sewing, and patched. Even though everyone and their grandma knew damn well that your parents could afford any backpack you wanted. How your clothes where scuffed up and torn in some places. You could tell right then that she was one of the few, maybe the only person who could care a shred about your existence.
