Chapter 1: Early sunsets and a chilly breeze

Chapter Text

Tap tap tap

It was the sound of Ino tapping the drumsticks in her hands to the rims of her drums, rather the school's music department's drums. She shot her best friend, Sakura, a glance while Hinata flipped through pages of a small notebook.

“I have the newest lyrics in here somewhere-“ she muttered.

“Yeah! No worries Hinata. Take your time.” Sakura looked back at Ino and smiled, the two believed in Hinata's songwriting skills as she was their vocalist. They’d just wish she kept better track of the lyrics.

“Hey Hinata-“ ino began to speak, her head resting on her palm as she leaned over the drum set.
“Why not write the lyrics in an online doc or something? Then we could have access to them easier?”

Hinata looked up from the notebook and unconsciously straightened her back to look over at the blonde.

“I’ve tried… but I write better in here.” Her tone embarrassed, behind her back Sakura sent an irritated expression over to Ino who flung her hands up defensively.

“Maybe you could-“ Ino was hit in the head by a balled up piece of music paper, some scrapped sheet from the younger students learning to play their recorders. Sakura signaled for her to “shut up” and so she did, but not without silent protest in the form of mocking faces and gestures.

“Okay here they are.” Hinata stood from her stool seat and the other two girls gathered around to read and review them. Sakura tracked her finger along the lines of Hinata's neat handwringing, reading each line carefully.

“These are really- sweet?” Her confusion was warranted, thought Hinata, because up until that point all of the lyrics she’d presented the group were relatively melancholy.

Ino snatched the notebook from the dark haired girl, bringing it close to her face to see if she was reading them correctly.

“They really are cute…” Ino and Sakura looked at Hinata, who’s face was never able to hide anything, as she turned beet red and an almost unnoticeable gleam of sweat formed around the perimeter of her face.

“What’s with the switch?” Sakura questioned, and Hinata tried to deflect stuttering and avoiding eye contact with her two friends. She began to mutter about just feeling inspired and how life’s been very sweet, but her friends, especially perceptive Ino wasn’t buying it.

“Well, whatever it is-!” Sakura winked at Ino, who grinned back.
“We’ve gotta play it, what were you thinking Hinata?”

The dark haired girl smiled, picking up her bass and aligning her mic with herself. She strummed the strings and began to sing, after a few sounds Ino began to follow with the rhythm and sound of Hinata's song, adding the drums in not long before Sakura played along as well.

Fit the next hour, as the early sunset leaked through the windows, they tweaked and messed around with the new song. Eventually deciding that it should go on their set list for the first small gig they were playing.

“Where is it gonna be again?” Ino asked.

“You know the church down the road? I was told that we’d be able to hook our stuff up and to come early to do so.” Hinata answered.

“So we’re gonna be playing for a buncha churchy people?”

“No stupid, the church is just hosting the performers.” Sakura sneered

“Okay but it’s a church? There are going to be church people?”

“You could quite literally say that about any location we could play at?”

The two girls bickered, Hinata was used to it and ignored them. She reached into the back pockets of her jeans and took out the folded flyer.
Small artist music festival, email [email protected] to sign up and for additional details.
She thought about her friend handing the flier to her, excited to tell her that he’d shown a recording of her band playing to the host and he loved it and wanted them to come Perform.

“Seriously Kiba!” She perked up with excitement, her and the girls have been meaning to find somewhere to play fpunlically.

“You think this is a joke?” Kiba messed around with her, receiving a light shove to the shoulder before she wrapped her arms around him.

“Thank you so much!” Her face pressed deep into his sweater.

“All right all right- don’t thank me yet” he smiled and she didn’t let go.

The three girls talked as they began to tidy the music room. Hinata wanted to remind them that they need to clear their calendar for the next three weeks before the gig, to practice as much as they can and really finalize their set list.
But there was something taking up the other two girls' attention.

“I’m getting a ride home today.” Sakura smirked, pulling her jacket on to brace the chilly breeze that awaited outside.
“From Sasuke.”

At the moment Sakura said that, Ino was faced away, she snarled before turning back around to smile at her best friend.

“Oh really!” She mentally kicked herself for sounding too cheery that it was obvious she wasn’t being genuine.
“How’s that been going?”

Sakura only mentioned Sasuke a few times to the girls, ino didn’t think it’d ever get that far, Sakura never had an official boyfriend but sasuke sounded like he was getting awfully close.

“Great! I think? He’s kinda hard to understand sometimes.. but he’s so~ cute!” Ino couldn’t disagree, Sasuke was one of the best looking guys at their school, but for Sakura to get with him? She couldn’t imagine it, but here it was happening.

“I’ve never really been around him.” Hinata spoke, breaking the small amount of tension that was in the air, as well as snapping Ino out of her thoughts.
“I’ve seen his brother hang around Neji before, but never Sasuke.” Hinata tapped a short nail to her chin, trying to find things that related to what the others were talking about.

The pink haired girls phone lit up in her pocket, presumably a text from Sasuke because she quickly hugged the two girls goodbye and rushed out of the music room leaving Ino and Hinata alone.

“So… what's his brother like?”

“Quiet.” Hinata answered quickly.

“Like… you quiet? Or murderer quiet?” Now hinata though for a second, inos questions were always a bit out there.

“I’d say me quiet, why? Don’t tell me you wanna talk to him…” hinata was familiar with inos long list of male suitors, but she couldn’t justify supporting ino going out with itachi.

“He’s graduated, remember? Like he graduated 3 years ago…”

“Ew! No… I draw the line at college guys.” Ino spat, immediately knowing what Hinata was insinuating.

Ino pulled her bag over her shoulder and wrapped an arm around Hinata as they walked out of the room together.

“And didn’t he go out with your cousin?” Hinata sighed at the mention of her cousin's ex, forgetting that she told Ino about it.
