Chapter Text
Jack was at it again.
Bunny grumbled in annoyance as he passed by his egg golems and caught them watching another Australian movie projected onto the cliff wall.
Seriously, where did Jack even keep getting those?
And more importantly, how did he keep managing to get in and leave them here?
Bunny blamed the kangaroo nickname. Somehow, it had all started from there, and it had ended with Jack sneaking in Australian movies for his eggs to watch.
Bunny, who was currently travelling through his tunnels, also had a sneaking suspicion that things had definitely not ended yet. Oh joy.
"Hey Bunny!" Jack said, suddenly right next to him as he exits the tunnel.
Bunny did not jump at that, thank you very much. He doesn't startle.
"What are you doing here?" Bunny asked, trying to reclaim his composure before Jack noticed.
Thankfully, the kid didn't seem to. "Visiting Jamie." Jack said. "He's introducing me to basketball."
"Bunny!" Jamie himself ran up to them, looking excited. He was carrying an orange ball.
He held it out to Bunny. "Do you want to play with us?" Jamie asked.
The other neighborhood kids gathered behind him all started clamoring eagerly in agreement.
"...You do realize I'm a rabbit, right?" Bunny said. "And like, six feet tall?"
"Go easy on them." Jack just said, and he was already dropping to the ground and figuring out whose team he was on.
Bunny eventually just rolled with it and joined the opposite team. Two guardians on the same side wasn't balanced at all.
So they played.
And played.
And somewhere along the way, Bunny got actually motivated.
And competitive.
"You will never beat me Jack!" He shouted, grinning like a mad rabbit as he dribbled the ball.
"Yeah, right!" Jack laughed, guarding the back of the dead end alley where they've set up the hoop.
Four things happen in quick succession.
Bunny jumped and let the basketball fly, the ball going not even remotely near the hoop.
Jack, getting carried away in trying to win, overreacted and jumped too high, overshooting his goal of blocking the ball.
Bunny, too late, realized that he'd let his powers leak in and had subsequently thrown the ball too hard.
And the basketball lands squarely in Jack's midsection and sends him crashing into the wall before landing in the dumpster.
"Jack!" All the kids shouted, rushing over to him.
"I'm fine!" Jack said.
He jumped up daintily, using the wind to scrape off bits of trash and garbage that were clinging to his hoodie.
"Ya sure about that?" Bunny scoffed, trying not to show how worried he is internally.
Because he knows how much he can hurt someone, and even if a basketball wasn't a weapon in the same way a boomerang was, it still packed a punch.
"Yup!" Jack beamed cheerfully, and Bunny's thrown.
Because Jack, for once, seems to be...
Honest.
He doesn't sound like he's in pain, he doesn't act like he's in pain, he...
He's... genuinely not hurt.
And that... that was not normal.
Something's up with Jack. But Bunny had no idea what.
