Chapter 1
Jason
“Don’t worry. You could never best me. You’re just a child. You did your best”
This was the eighth child this month. Why do they keep doing this? The incompetence is unbelievable. They are literal gods. Why send small children to kill me? They never succeed anyway. And they never will. They are literally fighting on the side of their enemy.
Suddenly a voice bellowed behind me: “Jason Gravil. You are under arrest for 16 counts of murder, three noise complaints, five counts of public intoxication, six counts of robbery, and-” I cut him off.
“Yeah, Yeah, I have that speech memorized already. Just put the cuffs on me. Take me away. They’ll bail me out no matter what” I said solemnly. It’s like they want me to be in and out of jail.
I feel the handcuffs tighten around my wrists for what? The tenth time this month? I’ve lost count.
They throw me to the back of the police truck. We turn left, then right, after 30 meters left again, then 4 rights” You are going the wrong way” this way we’d end up in a secluded alleyway... OH, SHIT AM I GONNA ACTUALLY GONNA GET KILLED BY THE FUCKING GOVERNMENT??!!
“No, we aren’t” said back a muffled voice that was almost flirty or was it mocking? Shit. Another child? This can’t be happening. Not again. Please, not again. Please, Oron, I swear if you’ll make me kill this one too, I will march my ass over there and torture you until I can’t no more
“Here we are!” Said the voice as the door to the truck opened. A child? Making it the kid’s job now huh.
Back at me looked a child, about 15 years old with medium length hair that had been dyed too many times to recognize the base color. A pathetic attempt at escaping the cops. She had hazel eyes and was dressed in black jeans with a black hoodie way too big for her draped over her shoulders. From under the massive hoodie peeped out silver rings, chains and all other accessories. Her choppy bangs flapping wildly in the wind. Damn did someone lock her up in a basement or is her skin actually paper?
“What are you staring at?”
“Why are you here?”
“What do you think?
“To kill me. Please, don’t try it. You won’t succeed and I don’t need that on my conscience.”
“Jeez. Hold your horses, Mr. Conscience. I can’t promise, but I can try. Only if you promise not to kill me first. What’s your name?”
“I'm Jason”
“Nice to meet you. I’m Lylli,” she said, as she reached a hand out to me, expecting a handshake before I waved my cuffed hands at her. She rolled her eyes and started picking the lock on the cuffs “where do you live? I'm sort of out of luck when it comes to a place to live so...”
“I can’t explain, but if you promise not to kill me, you can live with me.” I say as I step out of the car.
“Sure! I won’t kill you.”
“...”
“What are you waiting for? I said I won't kill you.”
“Oh yeah sorry.” I say as I step into the driver's seat
“Why did you think that I'd kill you in the first place?”
“I mean being kidnapped, not stopping at a prison or a courthouse, the gods having a personal vendetta against me for I don’t know what. You know all that stuff” I say as I make a Left turn, then one more, then a right.
“What do the god... Oooh so the guy who talked to me WAS a real god. Huh. Interesting" we make the last right turn
“What did the guy look like?” I say as I make a turn to a back street and down to the worse part of town.
“He had Blond hair, glowing eyes, he was like three meters tall, and he was wearing some weird wrap around dress like thingy” the girl finishes talking as I turn into the parking lot of an old police station
“Woah big guy! Ya’ gonna turn me into the police? You have like 30 warrants out for your arrest!”
“I'm not going to turn anybody in. Remember, we are actively driving a stolen police truck. We will leave this here and walk 5 blocks, ok? And do not try anything, and I mean anything stupid. You are going to stay by my side or I'm going to use one of the chains you have on as a leash. Do you understand?”
“Damn. You sound like a very pissed father.”
“Do you understand?”
“Yes, I did”
“Good”
She hopped out of the car and I contemplated driving off.
There is nothing bonding me to her. I could leave her. No. I said she could live with me, and I won’t go back on my word. I’m not like her.
“Hey Mister wanted. Come on."
I stepped out of the car and onto the filthy sidewalk.
“Don’t go wandering off”
“Jeez, I’m not a five-year-old. I won’t wander off”
We walked in silence for about 7 minutes until a raspy voice sounded beside us “Hey Mister! How much for the little lady?”
“Sorry, sir. Afraid she’s not for sale.”
“Oh, why not?” the man said slowly approaching “Just for a bit”
“Jason, you better not sell me to that old drunkard” Lylli muttered, worry flickering behind her eyes almost sure that I’d sell her
“A no is a no. Now go”
“Oh please. You were such a swe-” he didn’t get a chance to finish his sentence before the girl strutted toward him smashing him across the head before he could react.
“Sorry, are you still awake?” She said sounding deranged “Let’s change that shall we?” as she kicked his head against the wall with the sole of her black platform boot.
“Sorry ‘bout that.” She said, straightening out her jeans, the fearful look vanishing behind her eyes “let’s go. Don’t want to tie us to the crime”
“You really kicked the sense out of that guy”
“Yeah, you get to a point where you don’t think about defending yourself anymore. You just do it.”
After walking in silence for 5 minutes, we reached the crappy corner house that was falling apart at the seams
“Welcome to my, and now your, home. It’s actively falling apart but, it has a roof and it keeps you warm.”
“Damn, I didn’t know you were rich like that. And what did you mean ‘it isn’t much’? It’s a fucking Mansion”
“The guest room is upstairs to your left. Make yourself comfortable. Dinner is in half an hour.”
