It was another sleepover between Kyra, Imogen, and Lily. It was a tradition they had, just the three of them. Ever since Kyra started officially dating Darra, Imogen had grown quite fond of her, even if she wouldn’t outright say it. That was just the person Imogen was, someone who would act all snarky and rude but deep down truly care for a person.
And for what it was, she’d grown to tolerate Lily, even if their personalities clashed from time to time. Imogen just didn’t understand how a person could be so… perfect all the time. Of course, Imogen had perfect grades but Lily was on a whole different level, a totally goody two shoes. Lily had been on her mind a lot more the past few days and she couldn’t exactly trace why. Maybe it was her silky hair, or her sickly sweet eyes, or her cheeks that would puff up whenever she was upset or—
“Imogen!” Kyra’s voice snapped her out of whatever trance she was in. “What flavor should we pick?” Apparently she’d been thinking about Lily too much to notice the array of cake mix flavors and frostings in front of her.
“Uhhh… red velvet with cream cheese frosting I guess” Imogen replied halfheartedly. Kyra and Lily were really into baking, even if it wasn’t Imogen’s forte.
“Ooh yum! My favorite!” Lily chimed in, her voice as happy as ever. Of course the first flavor that came to mind HAD to be Lily’s favorite, that was just Imogen’s luck. It was as if Lily put some spell on her, making her think constantly about the blonde fairy.
Baking itself wasn’t hard or anything, even without magic. A bit tedious, yes, but not impossible, but this time Imogen decided to sit back and watch as Kyra and Lily mixed the cake batter. Logically speaking, Imogen should like baking, it’s an incredibly precise science, one wrong move and you end up with a completely different treat.
“Imogen you HAVE to measure!” Lily exclaimed as she watched the elf dump flour straight into the bowl without even thinking of using a measuring cup.
“Why? Not like it’s going to change the recipe THAT much.” Imogen quickly responded, ignoring all of Lily’s concerns.
It turned out Lily was right. Measuring was incredibly important and the pair had ended up with a very dense and heavy cake that would’ve otherwise tasted fine.
Imogen was snapped out of her thoughts by a spoonful of frosting being thrown right at her nose. Lily had decided to get a bit playful and flicked another wad of frosting right at Imogen.
“H-hey!” Imogen exclaimed, wiping the sticky mixture from her face. She couldn’t tell if she loved or hated the attention. It wasn’t until she had completely cleaned her face that she realized Kyra had left the room.
“Live a little, Imo, it’s just a little bit of frosting.” Lily replied, with a very…suspicious look in her eyes. Imogen had known Lily for years and she only had such an expression when she was hiding something.
Imogen studied Lily as she took the cake out of the oven to cool, wondering what she could possibly be hiding. It couldn’t be something relating to the bureau, Imogen received constant updates on that. It couldn’t be something related to Kyra since she usually broke important news to the two of them together. What could possibly be on Lily’s mind.
“What’s got you acting so weird?” Imogen inquired, leaning over the countertop.
“Oh well… nothing, other than I beat you at something” Lily replied with a smug grin.
That pissed Imogen off. She was consistently at the top of their class, could conquer any spell, and just generally had more knowledge than the average elf. Lily beating her in anything at all ground her gears, why did this girl have to be so perfect?
Lily continued, “Remember that mind reading spell Professor Maxwell had us practice? I’ve figured it out and from what I can tell you haven’t!”
Oh shit. If Lily could read her mind that meant she could tell how often she was thinking about her. That meant she could possibly know things about Imogen that Imogen herself didn’t even know.
“I know you’ve been thinking about me an awful lot.” Lily broke the silence, “I’m quite flattered honestly.”
Imogen tried to speak but nothing came out. First of all, how’d Lily master a spell before her? Second of all, if she could mind read, she could find out everything Imogen had ever wondered, even for just a second. This was so incredibly awful, imagine all the embarrassing thoughts Lily knew. Imagine if she found out about—
And then she felt it. A soft kiss to her cheek. An expression of affection that didn’t need words to follow up.
“Well… the cake’s done cooling, I’ll go get Kyra to decorate it.” And just like that, Lily walked out of the room to go find their other friend.
Well, Imogen thought to herself, that was a piece of cake.
