Work Text:

Lloyd stood right next to Kai’s bedroom door. Rocking back and forth on his heels with a neatly wrapped, Small box (courtesy of Nya—) clutched close to his chest, As if he was protecting it from something.

He’d been standing there for so long now, Just burning holes into Kai’s door.

Whenever someone walked past him, They couldn’t help but wonder what he was up to. And every time they asked him, He simply glowered at them, Refusing to give a response.

Lloyd didn’t know why he was so hesitant to just, Knock. And to hand over the gift he’d picked.

He was so excited, Back at the shops with Nya. He practically begged her to buy it. He swore up and down that it was something Kai would love and cherish, Something that he lacked in his life and needed to own.

But now, He didn’t seem so sure. He was repulsed by the thought of Kai opening the wrapping, Opening the box, Only to think what’s inside is ridiculous. Or the thought of Kai not liking it, Yet trying so awkwardly to not hurt Lloyd’s feelings.

Lloyd sighed, Turning his back to the door and sliding down till he was sat on the floor.

It doesn’t matter if he likes it or not!

He thought, Despite himself. Because it did matter, It mattered a ton to Lloyd.

He felt his throat sting with that familiar ache at the thought of Kai hating it.

He could see it as clear as day. He gives Kai the gift, Kai opens it… And his face instantly scrunches in disgust.

”In what world would I want this?!”

He would say, Before laughing at Lloyd for even picking such a gift—

Perhaps it wouldn’t go that way… But that’s just about how Lloyd thought it would.

On the other hand, He could also see another scenario. One where Kai opens it, And is over the moon with joy. Because of how cool it is, He would worship the very ground Lloyd walks on for getting it for him!

But then again, That’s just Lloyd’s wishful thinking.

And it seemed like neither scenario was gonna happen since Lloyd didn’t seem to be willing to give Kai the gift in the first place.

Just as Lloyd indulged himself in more fake scenarios, The door opened. Causing him to fall onto his back, Staring up at none other than the man he was avoiding, Kai.

Kai looked like he’d just woken up, His hair messy and his clothes mismatched. He tilted his head at Lloyd, Who to him, seemed to have fallen at his feet out of nowhere.

“You good?” Kai asked, Smiling down at Lloyd.

Lloyd clutched the box closer, Not showing any effort to stand up.

“I’m fine…” He mumbled. Some sort of embarrassing feeling creeping up on him.

Kai crouched down, getting closer to Lloyd’s face.

”What ‘ya got there?” The smile never left Kai’s face as he pointed out the box in Lloyd’s hands. He was more amused than anything.

“Something…” Lloyd replied, Looking down the box too, Like he himself wasn’t sure about what it is anymore.

“Something.” Kai repeated. “Something that you have to be on the floor for?”

“No!” Lloyd replied offendedly, lifting himself  to sit upright, Before turning to face Kai.

“It’s supposed to be nice— We’re both supposed to be standing up!” He whined, Looking right at Kai with those big, Green eyes.

Kai couldn’t resist, Really. Not while looking at those eyes. And definitely not when he hears that whiny voice.

He raised both his hands in mock surrender, Standing up effortlessly.

“Alright, I’m standing.”

Lloyd stared at him for a few more seconds, Before standing up too, Taking up a bit more effort than Kai.

He stretched his hands, Finally handing Kai the small box.

“Aw. It’s for me?” Kai took the box from Lloyd, Ripping the wrapping paper open ever so easily.

Lloyd looked at Kai with anticipation, Studying his every expression, His every move— Like he was waiting for the slightest sign that Kai didn’t like it.

Kai opened the box, And inside it… Was a tiny wooden sculpture of a fire-breathing dragon.

His smiled widened.

“Awesome!” Kai said, Taking a few steps backwards into his room, And neatly placing the wooden dragon on his bedside table.

“Thanks bud, I love it!” Kai singsonged, Ruffling Lloyd’s hair as he walked past him and out of the room, Humming a random tone with his hands behind his head.

Lloyd stood there for a few moments, Taking in that reaction…

“That was it…?!”

He eventually huffed to himself, Stomping a foot onto the floor with dignity.

Kai is stupid anyways.

He thought, Though he found himself smiling not so long after, Bouncing his feet on the floor excitedly

He was glad Kai loved it. He was happy.
