Work Text:

If you had to describe this day, the words you would have used would have been: Horrific, terrible, the worst day of your sad little life, a cycle of disgusting and utterly despicable events occurring all at the same time. Truly you weren’t overreacting. What had happened again? Oh, yeah, you were on your period. That explains it.

Periods are hell, there’s not much more to say about them. Or at least to you, they’d always made the most beautiful afternoon turn into a hurricane of destroyment and chaos. Cramps, nausea, headaches, back pain, and of course, emotional pain as well. That’s what periods were for you, and you’d shoot daggers at anyone who dared to call you exaggerated (honestly you had every right to), of course none of the flowers had been courageous enough to try to tell you anything.

You never got to fully understand your cycles, some months it didn’t hurt at all, and then the next ones it felt like your body was being stabbed repeatedly and with rage. The unpredictability was something you loathed. If anything because you never knew when it would be your turn to suffer. You hadn’t expected that day to be today of all days.

You and your boyfriend had gone to bed early, and you had been feeling more or less okay, kind of tired, but overall, okay. Sadly, your well being didn’t last long. In the early morning, you were woken up from your placid dream by cramps. If you were irritated by them during the day, you absolutely hated when they woke you up at night. You glanced at the window and the sky was still dark. Groaning, you covered your face with your blanket, trying not to think too much about it, maybe if you ignored it, the pain would leave you alone and you could drift off to sleep again-

A stab on your belly piercing through your body made you jolt in bed, clutching your skin. You tried to breathe, not wanting to awaken the sleeping beauty next to you. If Flowery looked cute during the day, he looked even cuter when he was asleep. Still, the whimpers you couldn’t stop yourself from making woke him up anyway. You felt the weight on the bed shifting and next thing you knew he was sitting next to you, tilting his head at you.

“Hey there, what’s wr-”

“I’m sorry, I’m sorry I didn’t mean to wake you up, I…” He hadn’t even said anything and you were already on the verge of tears, part from guilt and part from pain.

“No, no, don’t apologize like that” He took your hands away from where you were pinching your belly and held them between his own “Are cramps torturing my sweet Buttercup?” He asked.

You nodded, a bit shaky, and snuggled up against him. He held you close against his chest with one arm and with the other he started rubbing circles on your lower belly gently “I hate that this is happening to you, love” He talked in a soft tone while he planted a soft kiss on your head.

You sighed at the contact, his face was so close that you could get easily distracted from the pain if you tried. “You’re pretty… I wish I was pretty…” you mumbled sleepily, sniffling.

“Oh hush now, will you? You are just as beautiful and more than I am” He wiped the remaining tears from your eyes.

You gave him a weak smile. Of course, another strong cramp had to strike. You doubled over yourself, trying not to cry out in pain. Why? Why in front of him?

“Hey, can you hear me?” Flowery pushed strands of your hair away from your face. You met his eyes, and your expression broke his heart. Taking your hand in his, he circled his thumb against it, trying to soothe you “Is there anything I can do to help, love?” He talked in the softest voice you could imagine, not wanting to stress you more.

“Just-” You sucked in a breath, attempting to compose yourself so you could communicate actual words instead of whimpers “can you get me my heating pad?”

“Leaf it to me!” Your boyfriend exclaimed, which made you giggle in spite of the discomfort. Then, he stormed off the room to get the requested item while you laid down again, clenching your fists as you patiently waited for him to get back. As quickly as he found it, he rushed back with the heating pad under one arm and a glass of water in the available hand. He set it on the nightstand next to the bed and sat beside you, connecting the device to the wall and placing it on your belly for you.

“Too hot?” He asked. The last thing he wanted was to add more pain to your poor aching body.

“It’s okay” You adjusted the heating pad better, applying heat where it hurt the most. It didn’t magically stop the pain, of course, but it did relieve you somewhat.

“Here, can you drink this for me?” He helped you semi-sit on the bed and handed you the glass of water and a pill “It should help” He smiled. He was such a gentleman. You bet if you had been in that level of pain, he would have held the glass against your lips for you.

You took the items he was offering and swallowed the pill. After you did, he lowered his hand but you reached out and clutched it tightly. “No… Stay” You hated this part of it, feeling vulnerable and needy. It didn’t take much to make you cry.

“Woah, woah, hey” He cupped your face in his hands and planted a soft kiss on your forehead “It’s okay, I’m not leaving” He laid down next to you and opened his arms, inviting you in. You didn’t hesitate and moved closer. His arm came around your waist to press you against him, while the other caressed your hair in slow repetitive motions. You buried your face on his chest, overwhelmed by emotions. “I’m here if you want to talk, okay?” He whispered due to the proximity.

Your lip quivered, and you clutched his vest tighter “I’m just sad” Your voice broke, and his heart did too.

“Oh, Buttercup” He kissed your head lovingly. “It’s okay, I’m here” Taking your hand in his once more, he brought it close to your eyes and began gently poking your palm. Where he touched, flowers of various colors began to bloom. He knew how much you liked it when he did that, and it reflected on your eyes, as you stared at the scene with wide, sparkling eyes. He giggled. “You like it?” he asked, although he already knew you did, your reaction always made him happy.

You nodded, your eyes fixed on the tiny flowers that kept blooming in your hand. Then, the shape and color of the flowers started to form a pattern. You looked closer and realized why.. It said ‘I love you’. It also had Flowery’s face on it, of course. The gesture made you emotional. You didn’t want him to see your face so you just buried it on his chest again. He understood anyway.

Eventually, as the pain stopped, the exhaustion took over and your eyes slowly closed. Flowery covered yourselves with the blankets once more, and kissed your forehead again before slowly removing the heating pad from your belly and setting it aside. He stayed awake a little more, watching your sleeping form, making sure to notice any sign of discomfort projected on your features. When he found none, he shifted closer and finally drifted off as well.

“Sleep well, my love” He mumbled before falling asleep.
