Work Text:
I saw her dancing with a couple of girls over there in the corner. I couldn't believe my eyes. It was just like seeing her for the first time again. Beautiful and radiant, just like all those years ago.
“Kaje?” I whispered,
“Who's Kaje?” My friend asked,
My heart ached. I didn't want her to know how vulnerable I was about Kaje. I'd already had a biiiit to drink. I wasn't about to start sobbing at the bar. I still couldn't believe it. Especially when she started coming closer, in my direction.
“Mac? It's really you!” She exclaimed, with her perfect teeth showing through her smile. I stupidly shook my head.
“Is it really you?” She blinked at me, and took my hand.
“Are you okay? How much have you had to drink?”
“Nooot much," I giggled. I wasn't falling for the trick my mind was playing on me. Not again.
“Mac, it's really me,” Kaje frowned. I pushed her away, figuratively and literally. I did it all those years ago, and now I'm doing it again. I don't want to see her just for it to be a weird drunk made up thing. I wanted her, wholly.
“Kaje, you're not real,” I snorted.
“Mac, how drunk are you?” She frowned, still in disbelief of how bad my drinking problem had gotten.
“You shouldn't worry about it...Kaje's living her best life in New York. God, I miss her," I was nearly sobbing, but even if I was almost blackout drunk, I would never ever get that vulnerable in public.
“You should go home,” KJ face seemed to be in a permanent state of worry.
“Tell Kaje I never forgot her, you imposter,” I giggled.
“I'll make sure of that,” She sighed, leading me out of the bar and to her car. Her nice ass car. How's she gonna drive if she's not real?
I was so excited to be back home. I got some of my old friends here. Well, whoever was left of them. One of them invited me to this newish bar. We had a good time, dancing and drinking. Then, I spotted this familiar silhouette. She had a short haircut with those same eyes. I knew who it was immediately. I ran up to her, with no doubt in my heart.
“Mac! It's really you!” I exclaimed, excited to see her again, and expecting a hug.
“Is it really you?” She was clearly drunk, and my heart sunk badly. I knew she drunk and smoke cigs before, but...I don't know, I never thought it had gotten that bad. I was praying she was alright, and that no one had spiked her drink.
“Are you okay?” I took her hand, “How much have you had to drink?”
“Nooot much," She slurred. I wanted to take her home so badly. I tried to sober her up, if it could even work.
“Mac, it's really me,” I tried.
“Kaje, you're not real,” She pushed back. She was unreal.
“Mac, how drunk are you?” I pleaded, but it seemed like she wasn't gonna give up.
“You shouldn't worry about it...Kaje's living her best life in New York. God, I miss her," Her voice was thick. I had only seen her cry maybe a couple of times, when we were alone, but I was scared of what would happen if she started sobbing right now. She misses me? Then why did she never call? She knows all about my “perfect life” facade, so why would she believe it now? Is it because I left Stoney Stream? New York was beautiful, but it isn't all glitz and glam in the big city.
“You should go home,” I tried again. I had to take her home. Something bad could happen to her here.
“Tell Kaje I never forgot her, you imposter,” She smiled slightly. I couldn't believe it. I sighed and helped her off the barstool.
“I'll make sure of that,” I promised. I lead her to my car and strapped her in, and drove back to my place.
