the legend of zelda: beast of the wild

Summary:

Twilight makes himself Wild’s problem.

Work Text:

“Oh, hey there,” Wild says, shocked, looking up from his plate of grilled meat and vegetables. He had not been paying attention to his surroundings, too busy enjoying his food. He probably should have been paying attention.

The wolf doesn't move, just stares at him.

“Um. Please don't hurt me. Are you hungry? Do you want food?”

He sets his plate down and backs away slowly, and watches as the wolf delicately scarfs down the meat, picking cleanly around anything green on the plate.

“Oh you're a hungry boy,” Wild laughs, as the beast approaches him and nuzzles his empty hand for more food. He begins flicking through his slate, looking for a piece of gourmet meat.

“Hold on, be patient. You can have a nice little treat, because you're well behaved, and also as a thank you for not eating me.”

-

The huge wolf is hard to miss, but at least he's friendly. The children of Hateno Village crowd around him, and he rolls over, almost on top of a few of them, basking in the attention.

“C’mon, Wolfie, we've got places to be.”

Wolfie puts on his best puppy eyes and wags his tail.

And that's how he ends up spending the rest of the afternoon giving rides to the delighted village children, accompanied by an unimpressed Wild.

“He's lucky he helps me hunt, I couldn't afford to feed him otherwise,” Wild comments to a group of young mothers, rolling his eyes.

-

It is nice having a friend, Wild admits to himself, someone to talk to as he navigates the hot deserts, dense woods and those snowy plateaus where it was so easy to get caught in a blizzard if one wasn't careful.

“Oh, you're warm,” Wild mumbles, burying his face in Wolfie’s coarse fur.

Wolfie nuzzles and licks at his face, and when he gets no response, he howls.

Wild never learns the identity of the stranger who brought him back to the nearest village. He does learn that the wolf stayed curled by his feet until he woke up.

-

“Why did he get a dog,” he overhears Paya asking, “when he already has a golden retriever fish boyfriend?”

Wild trips over his own feet. If he didn't know better, he could've sworn the wolf snickered.
