Work Text:

Riku stared at the endless horizon. Its purple hue melted into a beautiful red. The color of passion, he thought to himself, reminiscing on all the adventures that had slowly come to a close. He’d felt he lost his childhood from a young age, being forced to be something he was not, yet desperately thought he was. Living a lie, living in darkness did that to you. What he felt worse for, however, was the life that he felt he stole from Sora and Kairi. The two promised him it was okay. Not to worry.

Yet in the crimson dusk fell upon the land he stood in, the doubts he felt were slowly creeping back in.

Now, Sora was gone. Missing, not gone. Riku corrected himself as he sat on the soft grass beneath his feet. And he would do anything to find him. Absolutely anything. Sora was the best friend he’d always had, and needed when he felt alone. Sora was the one who was always trying to help him, even when he felt as if he deserved none.

To be fair, as the years went by, he found that everyone did have a bit of evil in them. But that evil could be purged, and turned into a light and kindness that rivaled daybreak itself. Red faded to complete blues and purples as he continued to look off into the distance.

Soon he would go to the Quadratum. Alone.

Kairi wanted to go. But she wasn’t ready. Despite what he said aloud, agreeing that her training should continue, he wished that she could come. She loved Sora too. She deserved to go and save him. A recent secret conversation between the two had made that very clear.

“I want to go!” Kairi told him, walking in front of him like an angry child.

“You can’t you’re n-” “Not ready I know, but every time it’s been you two! Saving each other or me! I love Sora, Riku! Please. Just..” Her voice was laced with sadness as she began to cry. Something he hadn’t seen her do for a good little while. He felt the same way, he wanted to save him too. “Kairi…” He said, not too sure what to say. To be honest, he knew she could do it if she really wanted to. Yes her strength and skills were still being built, but she was resourceful.

Kairi was honestly the more level headed between the three once they had for a short time, reunited. When they were kids, she also won that title, despite his trying to act cooler.

Kairi rubbed her eyes and slowly walked all the way to Riku, and gingerly wrapped her arms around him. In quiet, soft sobs, she whispered “I’m sorry, Riku.” Sorry? Sorry for what? She’d been keeping it together longer than he had been, that he was sure of.

“Don’t apologize. Sora’d want you to come. He loves you.” He whispered back, feeling tears coming to his eyes as well. He knew Sora loved her as well, and it was cute. Awkwardly, Riku wrapped his arms around Kairi’s small frame. She wasn’t that much smaller than Sora.

For both their sakes, which was selfish he knew, but didn’t care, he had to get him back.

He’d get him back. For the both of them.

Soon he’d be leaving. Without Kairi.

Riku pulled himself up from the grass and dusted himself off quickly in case any dirt or grime got onto him and then turned around to leave.
All he had in mind was the same thought he’d had when Kairi cried and he held her.
He’d get him back. For the both of them.
