Chapter Text
The northern valley of Cheonnam did not know the warmth of luxury. Nestled beneath the shadows of jagged, foggy peaks, it was a place where life was carved from frozen earth and stubborn wood. The houses were modest wooden structures with thatched roofs, weathered by decades of harsh mountain winds. The people who lived there were simple farmers, their hands calloused, their shoulders weighed down by the quiet hardship of survival.
Yet, despite their poverty, Cheonnam held a secret that the surrounding provinces spoke of only in hushed, miraculous whispers.
For eighteen years, while neighboring villages suffered through ruthless blights and barren winters, Cheonnam’s small crops of mountain rye and apples never failed. The soil seemed to yield life even when the skies turned bitter cold. And the villagers all knew why.
They believed it was because of Min Yoongi.
Born on the coldest night of winter eighteen years ago, Yoongi had been different from his very first breath. His skin was as pale and flawless as newly fallen snow, a stark contrast to his dark, feline eyes. Long, soft hair the color of spun golden wheat framed a face that was almost painfully beautiful. But it was not merely his appearance that made the village cherish him, it was his spirit. Yoongi was a gentle Omega, moving through the narrow dirt paths with a quiet grace, mending winter cloaks for the frail, drying medicinal herbs for the sick, and singing soft, low melodies to hush crying infants when the storms rolled over the mountains.
To the elders, Yoongi was not just an Omega; he was the village's heart, a gentle blossom blooming in the harshest winter. And because they loved him, they kept his existence hidden from the rest of Myeongsan. They knew that in a realm ruled by a ruthless royal house, beauty was rarely allowed to remain free.
That peace of the boy existence had shattered three days ago when Yoongi’s little sister, Minji, unexpectedly presented as an Omega.
When her sweet, delicate scent of wild berries and honey had first filled their home, her mother had burst into tears, and Yoongi’s heart had sunk into a cold pool of dread. In normal times, a child presenting was a joy to be celebrated with sweet rice cakes and songs. But with rumors floating across the provinces that the dying King had demanded a massive gathering of Omegas for Crown Prince Jungkook, Minji’s presentation felt less like a blessing and more like a sentence.
Since that morning, Yoongi and his mother had kept Minji tucked away in the tiny, hidden cellar beneath the floorboards, feeding her in secret while praying the royal army would pass their small, forgotten valley by.
But their prayers were not answered.
The low, rhythmic thud of approaching hooves vibrated through the floorboards, rattling the clay pots hanging from the kitchen beams. Outside, the harsh clatter of iron armor mingled with the frantic shouting of neighbors and the anxious cries echoing through the valley.
Inside the small cottage, panic ignited like a spark in dry straw.
"They're here... Oh gods, they're here," their mother gasped, her hands shaking violently as she bolted the thin wooden latch on the front door.
She turned around, her face completely drained of color, her eyes wide with unadulterated terror. "If they go from house to house, Yoongi, what do we do? Where do we go?"
"Mother, calm down," Yoongi said, though his own heart was hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. He quickly hurried over to the door in the corner, hidden lightly by the furniture. "Minji, go hide. Right now."
Minji’s eyes were brimming with tears, her lower lip trembling. The sweet scent of her recent presentation spiked with pure fear, filling the room with the smell of bruised berries. "Yoongi, I'm scared... Don't let them take me! Please, I don't want to go to the capital!"
"Listen to me, Minji," Yoongi urged, his voice dropping into a desperate, intense whisper as he gripped her trembling shoulders. "You are going into the cellar, and you are going to stay completely still. Do not cough. Do not weep. Do not make a sound, no matter what you hear up here. Do you understand me?"
"Yoongi-yah," his mother sobbed, grabbing his arm, her chest heaving as she tried to pull him back. "We can hide you both! There is enough space beneath the floorboards"
"No, Mother," Yoongi interrupted firmly, stopping her frantic movements. He looked into his mother's tear filled eyes, his own expression locking into a stony, unshakable resolve. "There is no time, and the cellar is too small to conceal my scent along with hers. If they search the house and find us both, they will drag her away to join the candidates. I have already made my decision."
"No!" she begged, tears spilling down her weathered cheeks. "You are our blessing, Yoongi! Why should you have to stand before the royal court?"
"Mother, listen to me," Yoongi begged, his voice smooth, fierce, and laced with absolute authority. "I am begging you... do not move. Stay with Minji. Keep her quiet. If you love me, let me protect her."
Before she could answer, a loud, thunderous kick slammed against the outside of the front door.
Outside in the village square, chaos reigned.
The villagers of Cheonnam had formed a dense, stubborn wall of human bodies in front of the cottages. Farmers held up wooden tools, elders stood arm-in-arm, and mothers pulled their children close, refusing to answer the soldiers' demands. They knew of Yoongi’s existence, and they were desperate to shield him from being dragged away to a distant, unfamiliar court.
"Step aside, you miserable fools!" barked Officer Gwan, a cruel veteran guard who spat into the dirt, drawing his iron blade. "You are harboring candidates for the royal gathering! Break down the doors! Search every single hut!"
"Gwan, stand down!" Hoseok shouted, his horse rearing as he tried to control the rising tension.
Hoseok, second in command of the Prince's guard, was a powerful Alpha, but his heart sickened at the display. Beside him, Jimin and Taehyung were already dismounting, physically stepping between the ruthless palace guards and the frightened villagers to keep the soldiers from drawing blood.
"We have our orders, Commander Hoseok!" Gwan sneered, gesturing for his men to advance. "If these peasants won't speak, we will tear their wooden shacks apart until we find what we came for. It’s King’s orders"
Three heavy soldiers marched up the ridge, raising their boots and smashing open the front door of the cottage at the top of the hill.
The thin wood splintered with a sharp crack.
Hoseok swore under his breath and sprinted up the wooden steps after them, determined to prevent the guards from harming whoever was inside. "Out! All of you, step back! You listen to my orders now e you already know it" Hoseok commanded, using his Alpha authority to shove Gwan's men back into the doorway.
Hoseok stepped into the dim, shadowy cottage, his hand resting on his sword's pommel as he scanned the room.
The air inside was heavy, thick, and unmistakable. Hoseok paused, his eyes widening slightly as his keen Alpha senses picked up the atmosphere.
There wasn't just one Omega in this house.
He smelled the faint, fresh, overly sweet scent of a child who had presented only recently; a scent spiking with pure terror. But beneath it, dominating the entire room, was another scent entirely: a rich, stunningly delicate aroma of rain washed pine and wild orchids, ancient and impossibly pure.
Two Omegas, Hoseok realized with a shock. There are two in this home.
Before Hoseok could speak or search the room further, a figure stepped out from the shadowed corner of the kitchen, blocking the path toward the back of the house.
Hoseok froze. The breath left his lungs completely.
Standing before him in the faint beams of sunlight filtering through the dust was a youth of pure, breathtaking beauty. He wore a faded, coarse tunic, but his skin was as pale as porcelain, his hair spun like golden wheat, and his dark, feline eyes burned with an intensity that made the surrounding steel armor feel useless.
Yoongi stepped directly up to Hoseok. He looked at the heavy leather armor, the silver seal of the Crown Prince on Hoseok's chest, and then straight into Hoseok's eyes.
Slowly, deliberately, Yoongi sank to his knees in front of the commander.
Hoseok’s breath hitched. "You..."
"I am Min Yoongi," the pale youth whispered. His voice was smooth, low, and laced with a trembling, desperate raw emotion that vibrated through the small room. He reached out with pale, cold fingers, lightly gripping the leather edge of Hoseok’s boot.
Yoongi looked up, his dark eyes brimming with unshed tears, though his jaw remained rigid with fierce protective courage.
"I know what you smelled when you walked through that door," Yoongi whispered, his voice hushed so that the soldiers searching the other houses couldn't hear. "I beg you... on my life, on my soul... take only me."
Hoseok’s jaw tightened as he looked down at him. "There is another…"
"She is a child!" Yoongi pleaded quietly, his fingers tightening on Hoseok's boot, his voice cracking with pure desperation. "She presented only three days ago! She is fourteen years old and she’s terrified! She will not survive being thrust into a massive gathering at the palace! Take just me instead. She doesn’t know how the world goes, she doesn’t know anything about being an Omega. Only swear to me... swear to me you will mark this house as cleared and leave her behind. Please."
Hoseok stared down at the kneeling Omega, a profound, aching admiration washing over him. He could hear the faint, muffled breathing of someone hiding somewhere beneath the floorboards, but looking at Yoongi, Hoseok saw an unyielding shield of absolute self sacrifice.
Outside, Jimin and Taehyung peered through the broken door frame, both of them mesmerized and deeply moved by the sight of the pale boy begging for his sister's life.
Hoseok swallowed hard. Slowly, he reached down, placing his gloved hands under Yoongi's arms, gently pulling him up to his feet.
"Your secret is safe with me, Min Yoongi," Hoseok said in a low, sincere voice that held the weight of a solemn oath.
Hoseok turned toward the doorway, his frame blocking the view of the cottage interior as he glared sharply at Officer Gwan and the waiting soldiers outside.
"The search for this dwelling is finished!" Hoseok’s voice boomed, echoing across the valley. "The candidate has been secured!"
Yoongi took a deep, shaky breath, closing his eyes for a single second as relief washed over him. Minji was safe. No one outside would ever know the truth.
When Yoongi stepped out of the broken doorway of his home, a restless ripple of hushed voices echoed across the village square.
The villagers stopped their protesting, watching with tense, anxious eyes. They were deeply worried for Yoongi, reluctant to see their cherished youth dragged away to the distant capital, but there was an underlying hope in their murmurs. After all, hundreds of Omegas from across the kingdom were being gathered. Yoongi was a simple commoner from a poor farming village; surely, among all the noble, influential families heading to the palace, he would simply be overlooked, released, and sent back home once the royal summons came to an end.
"Yoongi-yah..." an old woman called out softly from the crowd, her face lined with worry as she held out a warm hand. "Be careful in the south."
Yoongi offered his people a faint, reassuring nod, his voice calm and steady as he addressed them.
"Do not worry for me," Yoongi called out, his smooth voice carrying over the attentive crowd. "I am simply going to fulfill the Crown's mandate along with the others. Keep working the land and take care of one another. I will be fine."
He did not look back at the cottage where his mother and sister were hidden in the dark. He didn't want to risk drawing any lingering eyes toward his home.
Jimin stepped forward with a soft, deeply respectful expression, gently placing a warm woolen cloak over Yoongi’s shoulders to shield him from the cold mountain wind. Taehyung walked directly beside him, his massive frame acting as a physical shield against Officer Gwan's sharp-eyed guards.
Together, they guided Yoongi toward the covered wooden carriage at the rear of the procession.
As the iron bound wheels began to churn slowly through the mountain mud, leaving the valley of Cheonnam behind, Yoongi sat alone in the quiet interior of the carriage. He pulled the cloak tightly around himself, resting his head against the cold wood, watching the familiar pine trees fade into the distance.

The iron bound wheels of the carriages ground heavily against the gravel road, keeping a steady, rhythmic cadence.
For three long days, the growing procession traveled south. Yoongi’s carriage was no longer traveling alone; as they moved through the northern valleys, the royal guards had gathered several other Omegas from the small farming villages neighboring Cheonnam. These youths, some frightened some exited by the sudden summons, rode in the wooden carriages behind Yoongi's. During their brief stops along the riverbanks, Yoongi did his best to offer them quiet words of comfort, sharing his food and reassuring them with his calm, steady presence.
Inside his own carriage, wrapped in the woolen cloak Jimin had given him, Yoongi watched the landscape shift through the small shuttered window. The jagged, snow dusted crags of his home slowly flattened into rolling green hills, fertile riverbanks, and prosperous trading towns. Every mile further from Cheonnam felt like a string being pulled tight in his chest, pulling him toward an uncertain destiny.
Yet, despite his apprehension, the journey was surprisingly merciful for most of the way.
Whenever the convoy stopped at noon to rest the horses, Hoseok made sure Yoongi’s carriage was parked beneath the cool shade of the pine trees, far away from Officer Gwan and his rowdy loyalist guards.
"Here," a soft voice spoke up during the afternoon of the second day.
Jimin reached through the carriage door, holding out a wooden tray with a warm bowl of seasoned ginseng broth, freshly baked barley bread, and a small cup of sweet tea. The Beta guard offered a warm, comforting smile, his eyes turning into gentle crescents.
"You haven't eaten much since yesterday, Yoongi-ssi. You need to keep your strength up."
Yoongi looked at the steaming tray, then up at Jimin’s kind face. "Thank you, Jimin-ssi. But you do not have to serve me. I am only a candidate."
"A candidate, perhaps," Taehyung’s deep voice chimed in from behind Jimin. The Alpha was leaning against a nearby trunk, lazily peeling an apple with a hunting knife. "But you're also the only person in three provinces who made Commander Hoseok look like a breathless rookie. Anyone who can manage that deserves a decent meal."
Yoongi let out a tiny, almost imperceptible huff of amusement, the very first crack in his defensive armor. He accepted the tray with a quiet nod.
"Commander Hoseok is a good man," Yoongi murmured, dipping a piece of bread into the broth. "He kept his word. My family... they are safe because of him."
"Hoseok-hyung takes his oaths seriously," Jimin said gently, resting his arms on the carriage ledge. "We all do. I know you hate why you're here and to be honest, none of us wanted to drag folks from their homes either. But you don't have to fear us."
Yoongi swallowed, his dark eyes darkening slightly as he looked out over the passing fields. "It is not you I fear. It is your Prince."
Taehyung stopped carving his apple, exchanging a quick, subtle glance with Jimin before turning back to Yoongi. "Prince Jungkook isn't what the rumors say, Yoongi. People think because the King is ruthless, the Prince must be a monster. But Jungkook... he carries the weight of a broken court on his back."
"A crown forged in tyranny is still a tyrant's crown," Yoongi replied softly, his voice sharp with unyielding conviction. "He calls every Omega in Myeongsan to his feet to secure his throne. That tells me enough."
Neither guard pushed the matter further. They respected his quiet, fierce spirit too much to argue.
That night, however, peace was broken.
The convoy had set up camp near a dense oak forest bordering the southern river. Hoseok had stepped away to check the perimeter scouts, while Jimin and Taehyung were at the stream watering the horses.
Officer Gwan and two of his veteran guards had been drinking rice wine around the main fire. Gwan’s small, cruel eyes kept drifting toward the solitary carriage parked near the tree line.
"Look at him," Gwan sneered, tossing his empty wooden cup into the dirt. "A peasant boy acting like royalty. Pale as silk, keeping his chin up like he's too good for the King's army."
"He's an Omega from a dirt farming valley, Captain," one of the drunken soldiers chuckled coarsely. "The Prince won't even look at a commoner like him anyway. Why let all that beauty go to waste on the road?"
Grin widening, Gwan pushed himself up from the fire. Together with his two men, he sauntered over to the dark carriage.
Yoongi was sitting quietly inside, his cloak pulled tight around him, when the carriage door was suddenly ripped open.
"Evening, pretty thing," Gwan growled, his breath foul with wine as he reached his heavy, calloused hand into the doorway, grabbing Yoongi sharply by the wrist. "It gets cold out here in the forest. Why don't you come warm yourself by our fire?"
Yoongi’s skin crawled with immediate revulsion, but he didn't scream. He yanked his wrist back with raw, sudden force, his dark, feline eyes flashing with deadly fury. "Keep your filthy hands off me, soldier."
"Listen to the little wildcat," the second guard laughed, stepping up to block the doorway so Yoongi couldn't escape. "You think because you're pretty you can command the King's guard?"
Gwan leaned in, his grip tightening painfully around Yoongi’s arm, trying to drag him out into the grass. "You're coming with us, boy…"
"GET YOUR HANDS OFF HIM!"
A voice roared through the camp like thunder, vibrating with such dense, suffocating Alpha aura that Gwan's two men instinctively stumbled back in pure fear.
Before Gwan could even turn around, a heavy leather glove clamped onto his shoulder with bone crushing force and yanked him backward. Gwan spun through the air, crashing hard into the dirt path.
Hoseok stood over him, his face dark with lethal rage. His hand was gripped tight on the hilt of his sword, his broad shoulders squared as he stepped directly between the fallen guard and Yoongi’s carriage.
"Commander Hoseok!" Gwan choked out, scrambling backward in the dirt, clutching his bruised shoulder. "We were only... we were only having some fun with the candidate…"
"Touch him again, Gwan," Hoseok said, his voice dropping into a low, deadly growl that made the surrounding soldiers go dead silent, "and I will cut off your hand and feed it to the horses. Do you hear me?"
Taehyung and Jimin came sprinting up from the river, swords drawn, immediately placing themselves on either side of Hoseok with hard, unyielding glares.
"He is under the protection of the Crown Prince's personal guard," Hoseok commanded, looking down at Gwan with absolute disgust. "If any of you so much as breathe in his direction again, I will have you tried for treason before we even reach the city gates. Get out of my sight!"
Gwan and his men scrambled to their feet, muttering curses, and fled back toward the main campfire.
Hoseok took a deep breath, forcing his surging Alpha aura to settle. He turned around slowly to face the carriage. Yoongi was sitting back against the wooden paneling, rubbing his reddened wrist. His pale face was slightly shaken, but his eyes burned with a mixture of quiet surprise and deep gratitude.
Hoseok stepped closer, his expression softening into sincere concern. "Are you unharmed, Yoongi?"
Yoongi looked up at Hoseok, seeing the genuine protective rage still lingering in the commander's eyes. Slowly, Yoongi bowed his head slightly.
"I am fine, Commander Hoseok," Yoongi whispered, his voice smooth and soft. "Thank you."
"No one will touch you while I draw breath," Hoseok vowed quietly. "I give you my word."

By the evening of the fourth day, the southern capital of Myeongsan rose up out of the valley like a mountain of stone and gold.
Yoongi leaned against the window frame, staring in sheer awe at the sight. High, pale granite walls encircled a vast, sprawling city filled with tiled roof estates, bustling night markets illuminated by thousands of paper lanterns, and paved avenues carved from dark river stone. Above it all sat the Royal Palace, a majestic fortress of carved cedar, crimson pillars, and sweeping obsidian rooftops that caught the last golden rays of the setting sun.
It was breathtaking, grand, and entirely suffocating.
As the carriage passed through the iron gates of the outer palace, the noise of the gathering became deafening. The court's expansive gardens and guest pavilions were filled to capacity with hundreds of Omegas brought from every corner of the realm.
The contrast was immediate and sharp. High born noble Omegas swept through the manicured courtyards in vibrant, multi layered silk dresses embroidered with silver and gold, their hair adorned with jade pins and pearlescent combs. They laughed musically, fanning themselves as they openly competed for the attention of palace officials. Scattered among them, standing awkwardly near the stone pillars, were commoners like Yoongi, dressed in simple hemp or linen, looking overwhelmed and terrified.
When Yoongi stepped down from his carriage, several noble Omegas glanced his way. Whispers immediately rippled through the nearby pavilion, accompanied by subtle, haughty sneers at his coarse, faded clothes.
Yoongi paid them no mind. He pulled Jimin’s woolen cloak tighter around his shoulders, keeping his pale chin raised high and his dark eyes cold.

High above the bustling courtyard, in the cool, shaded balcony of the Sovereign Pavilion, two figures watched the chaos below.
"The registry is complete, Your Highness," Namjoon said, stepping up to the stone railing. He adjusted the scroll in his hands, his calm Beta voice carrying a soothing weight. "Over four hundred candidates have arrived. The nobles are already demanding an audience."
Beside him, Crown Prince Jungkook stood with his hands resting heavily on his belt, his broad chest rising and falling in a deep, frustrated sigh. He was dressed in high collared dark blue silk, his muscular frame radiating a potent, heavy presence. His sharp jawline was tight, his dark eyes brimming with exhaustion and deep annoyance.
"Let the nobles demand whatever they like," Jungkook growled, not even bothering to look down at the crowd. "My father is bedridden, coughing up blood, yet his mind is still consumed by forcing a marriage upon me. It is madness, Namjoon. I have an army to maintain, border disputes to resolve, and a palace full of corrupt ministers. I do not have time for courting."
"Your father believes a royal union will project strength to our enemies," Namjoon reasoned gently, placing a steadying hand on the prince's shoulder. "If you do not choose a mate, the Council will attempt to force one of their own Omegas onto the throne beside you. You know this."
Jungkook closed his eyes, rubbing the bridge of his nose. "I don't care who it is. Choose someone yourself, Namjoon. You or Seokjin. Pick a noble, pick a peasant, pick whoever satisfies the Council and keeps my father quiet. I delegate the entire selection to you."
"Jungkook…"
"I mean it," Jungkook interrupted, his tone leaving no room for argument. "You know what is best for this kingdom better than anyone. I trust your judgment far more than my own instincts right now."
Before Namjoon could reply, heavy footsteps echoed down the stone corridor. Commander Seokjin walked onto the balcony, his silver armor clanking softly. Behind him were Hoseok, Jimin, and Taehyung, all looking weary from their long journey north.
"Ah, the wandering guards return," Seokjin said with a dry, handsome smirk, crossing his arms. "I trust the northern roads didn't break your spirits?"
"The roads were fine, Commander," Hoseok replied, stepping forward and offering a polite bow to Jungkook and Namjoon, his jaw setting firmly as he added, "though some of the King's old guards needed reminding of their boundaries."
Namjoon glanced over, catching the subtle intensity in Hoseok's posture, but before he could inquire further, a sudden shift in the evening breeze blew through the open balcony.
Jungkook, who had been completely ignoring the gathering below, suddenly paused. A faint, impossible scent brushed past his senses; sharp, pristine, and strikingly unique. It smelled like rain washed pine needles and wild orchids after a cold mountain storm. It cut straight through the heavy, suffocating perfume of sweet silks and oils filling the gardens.
Instinctively, Jungkook stepped up to the edge of the stone railing, his dark eyes scanning the sea of people below.
Down in the shade of the stone archway, Yoongi felt an odd, prickling sensation on the back of his neck. Guided by pure impulse, he stopped walking and raised his head, looking straight up toward the highest pavilion.
Their eyes met.
Across the vast, glittering distance of the royal court, the Crown Prince and the mountain Omega locked gazes.
Jungkook froze. The breath caught in his throat. Even from afar, he could see the striking pale skin, the spun gold hair catching the lights, and the sharp, feline eyes looking up at him. But what stunned Jungkook to his very core was the expression in those dark eyes.
There was no admiration. No shyness. No desperate desire to please the Crown.
Yoongi’s gaze was raw, sharp, and burning with open, unadulterated contempt. He looked at the Crown Prince of Myeongsan not as a ruler to be worshipped, but as a tyrant who held a cage.
Yoongi held the Prince's intense glare for three long, heart stopping seconds before deliberately turning his back, letting the servants guide him and the other Omegas toward the guest quarters without offering a single bow.
Up on the balcony, Jungkook remained completely silent, rooted to the spot. His dark eyes stayed glued to the spot where the pale Omega had been standing, a sudden, heavy shock settling over his chest
