Work Text:

Mother loves you. (Chant it.) She has always loved you. Mother loves you. (Sing it.) No matter your sin, what you have done, and what you are going to do, She will love you unconditionally. Mother loves you. (Know it.) Mother helps you.

I used to be like you once. Mmm. Yes. I remember. Life bore no fruit because life had no color. The telephones melted my ears. Brrrrrng! Over and over again! Brrrrrrng! Brrrrrrng! The words from all the books swam in front of my eyes. It meant nothing. There was nothing.

Nothing! Isn’t that funny?

Do you hate it, too? Couldn’t nothing be turned into something?

Mother can help you, like She did me. Mother loves you.

I am standing in front of Mother now, me and thousands more. Her Other children are squirming in piles in the distance. Gray clouds hover above them, the downpour drowning out their screams. Over there is much different than the fertile green grass Mother resides on. Haha. It is not time for those children yet. The Others aren’t ready.

It’s almost my turn to suckle on Mother’s teat. Oh, I am so excited! Anticipation buzzes in my body. Her Milk nourishes us. Mother loves you. (Chant it.) She wants us to live forever, to bask in glory. Mother loves you. (Sing it.) Her Milk is good for us. As long as we listen to what She says, and let Her Milk settle in our bodies, She will let us stay in paradise. Mother loves you. (Know it.)

The children around me are similarly elated. Mother is massive before us, looking over us with Her big red eye. Her fur is the purest white I’ve ever seen. Her long ears are pointed towards the screaming Others. It is not their time yet.

Are you happy? Mother asks gently. She doesn’t speak. The Milk sings Her thoughts like a lullaby.

“Yes!” we all cry out. We are Her little lambs. The current round of children are done drinking Mother’s Milk. Oh, my turn next! I remind myself I can’t be too greedy. Mother frowns upon greediness. It is punishable.

My eyes shift to the Others. Their screams have been loud today. It almost makes me uncomfortable. What did they do, again? But Mother says they are bad, so they must be. They have to be punished. They cannot live in paradise if they are not punished first.

I love you, She tells us. Remember, don’t stray from my orders. I know best for you. You are dirty, but I make you pure. My Milk is your Blood and your Body. Without me, you are lost. I am your Shepherd. See? See? See?

“Yes, Mother!” A few children have milky tears in their eyes. It is beautiful.

Soon it is my turn to feed. I crawl towards Her, wrapping my mouth around Her teat. My eyes flutter in relief as I feel Her creamy Milk against my tongue. Ahh. I don’t hear the Others crying anymore. A deep sense of love towards Mother flows through me. She cares for me so much. I am crying too. I wish I could stay like this forever.

If I always listen to Mother, I can. I can. I can!

Mother can love you, too. She already does. She will take away your pain. Won’t you let Her? Can’t you feel Her Milk in you?

And then one of the children does something. They stop sucking the Milk!

“I cannot be brainwashed any longer,” they sneer, Mother dripping from their ungrateful lips. Mother does not say anything. I gasp with a mouthful of Milk. Blasphemy!

“They are punished for pointing out the injustices,” the child says, gesturing to the Others. Mother, again, does nothing. The grass is green, the sky is a deep indigo, and everything is perfect. This child will corrupt that. Do something, Mother! Please!

Finally, She sighs. It is sad when your own child turns against you. My milk has curdled in your stomach. It is my fault.

The child sneers. “You are cruel. I don’t care if I’m punished. You are callous.”

Mother laughs richly. I am sorry you think so. I love you so much. Can’t you see? Perhaps time with the Others will help you. I am only doing this because I love you.

Then the child is whisked away, and I see them transported towards the piles of wriggling Others. The clouds have intensified over there. I’m glad I’m not one of them. That could be you. A sinner who does not accept Mother.

You listen to me, remember? Mother asks. We all nod. We only listen to Her. She knows everything. She knows you.

Mother loves you. (Chant it.) Mother loves you. (Sing it.) Mother loves you. (Know it.)
